The last couple seasons of the TV show “Homeland” kind of went in that direction, although ultimately the writers pussed out, deciding not to explore the very interesting question of, what happens when you exist within a chain of command and you start receiving orders to do things which go against your conscience or your oath to uphold the Constitution (so the rot is originating within the system, rather than outside it), instead making the Ruskies the puppet masters behind the whole thing. 🙄 I swear the writers of that show must have been die hard Clinton 2016 supporters or something

I agree, and I feel like whoever wrote Civil War was being careful not to offend anyone politically or make it contextual to current or past American politics. This watered down the movie, and made it abstract in a way for me, which is why I mentioned it felt like a zombieless zombie movie.

I feel like that plot had so much potential... but also maybe not a movie a lot of people would like? I also don't think people should be trying to profit off the idea of American division?? idk...

That’s too bad. I think they’re are ways to portray things in a way that’s both entertaining and nuanced

There are plenty of low-level civil conflicts that don’t quite make the criteria for a full-fledged “civil war” but are interesting none-the-less, like the Italian “years of lead” during the 1970s, various periods in the Northern Ireland conflict from 70s onwards, various other simmering insurgencies…that’s really how I’d see a 2nd “civil war” progressing in this country, I don’t think it would be like the 1st one with armies arrayed along a battlefield, I think it would be more like a blend of ordinary life & war lol. Those kinds of situations suck ass too, for anyone who gets hard to the idea of civil war part dos (and unbelievably such people exist) I think you should give it more consideration

Some productions do a decent job rendering a dystopian near-future world with those kinda themes. “The Handmaids Tale”, it’s overly referenced but I thought the show did a good job depicting the weirdo rituals of the regime, the importance of symbolism for them etc. “Children of Men” did well with it too. Then there are a variety of things you could watch that reference real world civil conflict, like “state of siege”, about the early 70s political situation in Uruguay. I feel like you could make a really complex & compelling story about why someone would turn to political violence in this country, one which is balanced and doesn’t feel exploitative. It all involves the same kinda thing, movement activists recruiting among the disaffected, so there’s all kinds of ways to include entertaining cloak and dagger type stuff
 
Civil War was meh.

Garland has really been losing his edge. Saw it today at the cinema and wished I’d gone to see Dune; but I did have to yell at someone “turn your ringer off you moron!” Because they had a text ringer going off every five minutes.

At least they abided me.

The NeverEnding Story, I had such beautiful memories from watching it as a kid at my grandma's, a good old movie like they used to make them, with good teachings in it, I miss you and the days spent with you a lot grandma.
 
Mystery Team, it takes a few minutes to get good, but it is a really great stupid low budget movie. It may seem like a kids movie at first, but it definitely earns it's R rating. Saw it on Tubi. A group of 3 dorks who were kid detectives, who are now 18, and used to solving stupid kids crimes, end up in a double murder and a corporate conspiracy investigation.
I first saw this back when I drank and loved it. The strip club scene is great. These dorks never grew up, well at least one of them didn't.
IMO, this is a great low budget with an original plot and plenty of laughs, especially if your less than sober.

Definitely a classic, saw it several times.
Never saw the sequel or heard anything good about it.
 
Dune: Part Two (2024)

So I finally rented this with my wife and we watched it last week. It was plenty good in 4K with HDR on my home tv.

It was… not what I was expecting. There was a lot more of the plot shifting away from the novel in this one vs the first. His sister was never born, a decade doesn’t pass, it really threw me off. Many scenes were done perfect and much of the important plot points remained but the effect of modern culture/politics was much more evident this time, especially with the character of Chani. I’m not a fan of Zendaya (my wife and I both don’t really find her attractive) and I always thought Chani was supposed to be a real desert flower, whereas Zendaya… doesn’t have that look. Florence Pugh as Irulen was a good choice and we agreed is much prettier than Zendaya when I always imagined Chani should be the true beauty… just some odd casting choices there.

Anyhow, what was done right and stayed true to the novel was quite good. I’ve already preordered the two film set on 4K UHD disc, it should arrive mid May.

In summary, I watched both films back to back and couldn’t help but think that part one was the better of the two and held truer to Herbert’s vision. I’m also frustrated that the ending was changed from the novel simply to spur interest in Messiah when Villanueve didn’t know for certain till this last month that a third film would be bankrolled. I feel he took too many chances with this one and as such instead of the 9/10 or 10/10 rating I wanted to give it I couldn’t help but feel it lacked.


8/10 for the reasons stated above.
 
American Bombing: The Road to April 19th

A documentary about the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, and the lead up to that event

Features interviews with Katherine Belew, a historian who wrote a decent book on the topic (“Bring the War Home”) that I read in a class for skool.

I had forgotten a few of the details of the story but there are definitely unanswered questions regarding Oklahoma City. Even though McVeigh subsisted off the white power underground during the 90s, the funding for the action & perhaps even some of the reasons regarding why that particular target was chosen remain obscure. I think it’s definitely clear that some others in the movement were directly/indirectly involved in the planning and execution of the bombing…but ultimately the federal government, chagrined after failing to convict a host of movement activists on sedition charges in 1988, gave a pretty narrow focus on McVeigh and Nichols. Nichols claims that the operation benefitted from the actions of a “rogue FBI agent” who essentially directed the actions of McVeigh & co. but who knows

The detail about the bombing taking place on the same day as Richard Wayne Snell (a white supremacist revolutionary & murderer who had previously identified the Murrah building in OKC as a target to fire homemade missiles into) was scheduled to be executed, that was an interesting detail I thought. Also how closely the OKC bombing resembled a similar bombing in the book “the turner diaries”, from how the bomb was constructed to even the time it was detonated
 
Mortal Engines. I looked past the negative reviews and critical pomp bashing it and I was blown away granted I was altered however I enjoyed it nothing amazing but I felt a rush and was in awe wouldn't have seen it sober glad I caught her on Tubi lol Netflix stopped letting us share an account speaking of Peter Jackson too bad it flopped they needed a tighter plot and narrative not to mention better screen adaptation from a book that sort of stuff
