do strongly held values matter any more?

Which communities would you recommend?
I find that even places like /r/DrugNerds are filled with shocking incompetence and stupidity compared to similar communities I’ve seen on other platforms.
I hear you. There is so much bilge to sift through... and that really is the challenge. Rather than a specific community, it's more specific posters I hone in on. They usually all share the same qualities: skilled use of the English language, provide ancillary sources beyond their own words, are willing to engage in a discourse and even be contradicted, and have a sort of teacher/guide ethos which means they volunteer their time to be useful to others. I pretty much tune out other posters unless I'm trying to get a general feel for people's attitude toward a topic, or we're just shooting the shit.

I might not be describing this well. I've used the internet for 30 years now - jeeze, that's weird to think about - and I surf through so much content on a regular basis that I just know a good poster when I see one. I evaluate communities but how many of these value posters inhabit them, which means I judge communities by how they respond to my posts. If I make a post asking for advice or to try and raise an interesting discussion and the responses are consistently mediocre, I tend to abandon that community. Over the years I've accumulated some communities that have reliably good posters. Reddit has some. On the whole Reddit is a cesspool but there are some diamonds in the rough.

What kind of communities are you looking for, exactly? I love medical shit and lately I've been geeking out on /r/nursing and /r/doctors because they tend to be intelligent posters and their work lives are nuts in an interesting way.

No respect, no manners no empathy...I see videos of people in trouble or robberies and no body helps just gets the fucking phone out . I won't tolerate bullying and have stepped in a number of times to assist even though there were others closer, same if i see someone ill, straight over to assist - this to me is 'normal ' behaviour. Maybe outside of the cities it's better but London is a cesspit.
London is quite notorious for this. In Newcastle it's almost funny how everyone stands waiting ages just to hold a door open for someone they see coming. There's a guy living in a tent behind the church at the end of my road and I took him some hot mince and dumplings when I was on shrooms the other night.
I think as a whole the world is going to shit but then I think that's cos there's more people and our numbers continue to grow.

Geordies are generally personable people (unless they've been on the bottles of dog -,Newcastle Brown Ale)

Since ppl wanna normalize that an adult having sex with a child is OK, I've lost some faith in humanity. The world is fucked up.

that type of shit is way more common where he comes from but hes gonna criticize the US.

How the fuck do you not have an age of consent. If they said, "no more than 24 months between participants", that would make sense. A 30 year old bloke having sex with a 13 year old, deserves castration. It's not love, or even entertaining mindless sex. It's abuse of power and deserves painful castration

The world is governed by sick fucking bastards.

NAMBLA❗ ( north american man boy love a.). THAT is really sick shit.
99 Genders is 97 too much IMHO.
I totally agree with that UK TV guy
Piers ( hope thats how u spell it )

i mean ones that are not sacrificed in the face of extreme hardship.

they do exist, cos i'll give some examples:

i left a job at no notice, with nothing to go to, when asked to behave unethically
many people i know are sharing their homes with ukranian refugees indefinitely
JK Rowling defending her beliefs in the fact of death and rape threats to her and her family, both online and by people coming to her house

even working your fucking ass off to get a decent job seems alien to people these days. at uni when i wasn't profoundly mentally ill, i was working at least 8 hours a day in the week, 4-5 on the weekend (barring the odd heavy one). i know there is a privilege element to this but i see young people who want similar jobs to me who baulk at the idea of putting that much work in, through undergrad and postgrad, then even longer hours at the start of my career. unless they're excetionally bright (which only goes so far) or buck up quick, they've failed before they're even half way through studies.

last time i posted on here it was made very clar by the person replying that they didn't understand why having a strongly held value was worthy of respect. that example was about a guy who'd be a millionaire at the age of 30 if he wasn't so committed to free speech and keeping the internet a place where all views can be shared. he accepts the negative corollaries of free speech, that a lot of people want to say nasty things (he draws the line at breaking the law).

people who've thought their positions through and hold them strongly understand that there will be some nasty conosequences and accept those as better than the alternative. there isn't a perfect belief system, all have bad consequences, so its lazy to go after those imo, more importantly is whether people's actions back up their beliefs.

i dunno, i just feel like in most places online, morality and ethics has devolved to performative wishy washy nonsense delivered in social media friendly soundbites for and by people who'se attention span doesn't go much further than a tweet or a tiktok. maybe i'm just getting fucking old.

there's a lot of old fuckers in EADD so just wondering if your guys perception is the same or if you can help me figure out where i'm going wrong?
if i leave a comment on something thats longer than a paragraph, you get people replying 'TL;dr? (too long; didn't read)' at a paragraph or 'im not reading all that' or 'i cba reading that but your wrong' and im only near 30, its crazy the lack of attention span people have nowadays and they love to make you feel bad for putting some fuckin effort into a message/comment. its so strange

If your "values" involve judging others, mistreating others, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, or trying to tell other people what to do or how to live......then, no. They are ignorant and archaic and have no place in modern society.

If they involve treating everybody with basic respect and dignity and being overall a good, caring person...then this young person certainly thinks they matter a lot!
Bingo! couldn't be put in a better way if ya tried i think.
IMO Give basic respect to others but its up to themselves to show whether they should continue being respected or have failed and shouldn't. It's why i disagree with the way countries like japan work, your boss can be sexually harrassing you but to say anything would 'bring shame to you, the company and the boss, so you shouldn't say a thing'. Its like respect everyone even if they dont respect you and are even actively harmful to you

I hate that. It's like the ultimate form of victim blaming. "Honour Killings" even still go on in the east where victims of rape or killed by family member yo "undo" the dishour they have brought upon their families by being raped.
