i recently read a very interesting book about where this shit came from and why the truth is now verboten. its called cynical theories by helen pluckfose and james lindsay, highly highly recommend.
ironically, it comes from postmodernism which was originally conceived as extreme skepticism about everything. but somehow it got twisted as it got applied to things like race, gender, and disability. and now you will get hounded out of your job for holding rational beliefs (cf Brett Weinstien re race and Maya Forstater re gender) because even expressing dissent is 'violence.' also, beware, not understanding how someones identity leads them to be oppressed is also 'violence,' 'epistemic violence' to be precise. but, if you want to understand so ask a marginalised person, that is 'epistemic exploiitation.'
the arguments are bullshit but essentially, truth doesn't exist, but marginalised identities have a 'truer truth' than non-marginalised idenitites, except when they don't tow the party line in which case its internalised racism or misogyny or whatever. its not possible for individuals in the same marginalised categories to have different experiences. so basically people want to collect as many marginalised pigeonholes as possible because it makes their word count for more.
hence, white, heterosexual, western people feel like they need to collect identites you can identify into, such as gender, or conditions that are increasingly self diagnosed, like autism and adhd.
incidentally this entire brand of bullshit is a large part of why i've been offline a long while. i lost patience for it.
as an aside, i find the characterisation of high lunctioning autism as a disability, personally fucking offensive. oh, there's my internalised ableism!
