We have two main kinds where I work. LUGS (Lesbian Until Graduation) who can also be Lipstick Lesbians (who are uber femme and avoid the butch type). I see them more as ditzy rather than nutty. Thing is, this is a cultural standard. It's by its nature completely arbitrary. Words might be accepted at one time and not at a later time, they may be accepted in the group it refers but not from outsiders. They may be accepted in one context but not another.

But come on, if someone finds a word offensive and there's a super easy alternative they say is OK, what does it hurt to use it? If you ask me, it's not worth hurting someone to not use a word. It's just being polite.

I'll tell you a little secret, I have absolutely no clue what it means to "not have a gender". Like you know how some people identify as no gender at all? I don't think I really "get" that. But if they asked me to use some newly invented set of pronouns to refer to them, I'd honestly try to adhere to that. Cause, you know, they're still a person, and this is obviously important to them. Why should I intentionally do something hurtful? How does their request hurt me?

So, you don't have to be completely up to date on what's offensive to what people when, just do your best not to be an asshole and I think most people will respect that.

And if a multiple people tell me a word is offensive to a lot of people in that category, I'll probably discontinue using that word entirely, or at least not around them. Cause, why should I wish to hurt them if I can avoid it? Seems like it's asking so little of me but it might mean a lot to them.
