Film What's the Last Film You Saw? v. Tell Us What You Thought!

Ringu: Kasenban (1995) - 3 Rings - the very first "ring" movie. This was actually a TV movie and sticks a lot closer to the book than Ringu, The Ring Virus and The Ring. This movie is a mystery-suspense with only occasional, light horror elements. It wasn't great but it was terrible either; I managed to not get bored during it. It's biggest crime by far is that there's no crawling-out-of-the-TV scene (probably because it wasn't in the book either).

Freak Show (2017) - 4 Stars - feel good movie about a quirky gay teen who has to change schools to a conservative religious school where his flamboyant looks make him stand out as a target of ridicule. Comedy-drama that's light on the drama. Well worth a watch if you're feeling down.

Cannibal Ferox (AKA Make Them Die Slowly) - 3 stars - in all fairness this is around the 6th cannibal movie I have seen in the last month or so which may have detracted from the experience because it just felt like more of the same. Like most of the 70's and early 80's in the sub-genre it contains scenes of real animal cruelty including two scenes in which animals (a giant turtle and what looks like a baby boar) are basically tortured .

The Terror of Hallows Eve - 2.5 stars - a bullied 15 year old boy manages to summon an imp/demon to get revenge on the bully's by "scaring them to death". Not a bad movie but it had the potential to be so much better. And the characters were'nt actually scared to death and are killed in a way that has nothing to do with any fears that have been hinted at. It ends very abruptly and I had to fast-forward through the end credits to make sure the movie really had actually finished.

Evil Dead II - 1 star - I know this movie is well liked by most people but I hated it. The first movie was horror with a little silly humour, but Evil Dead II is purely a comedy but is in no way actually funny. The claymation-like effects are much poorer quality than the first movie and just looks ridiculous. I couldn't even finish it, it was that bad.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - 4 stars - based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S Thompson. The movie sticks incredibly closely to the book. Even the dialogue is word-for-word. Awesome drug movie and great if you are into psychedelics (I'd say it's best watched on DXM). I'd recommend giving this a watch, especially if you enjoyed the book.

Deliverance (1972, John Boorman) 4.5 / 5
Shit. I haven't seen this movie in a while. The "squeal like a pig" scene is still shocking like the first time I saw it.

Unsane (2018, Steven Soderbergh) 4 / 5
Pretty good psychological thriller and quite innovative since it is recorded entirely with an iPhone. I liked the story and Claire Foy's acting.

^i need to re-watch Deliverance. heard too much hype about it beforehand so was weighed down by expectation.

The Hunter (2011)

starts off like We Bought a Zoo and then jumps the shark.

haven’t seen The Lighthouse. looks like it’s filmed in 2:3?

133 films on imdb. The Florida Project is my favorite doing a quick scroll through. though i like his performance in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou more.

I liked Unsane too. I'm very impressed it was all done on an iphone! I didn't even know haha.

Never actually seen Deliverance! Been on my watch list for a very long time, though.

If you like thrillers with crazy backwoods shenanigans, I'd also recommend "Rituals" (1977). It's a hidden gem from our friends & neighbors in Canada

Prince of Broadway (2008)

an early sean baker film. co-written with darren dean, not chris bergoch. same kind of story as his later films. pales in comparison to Tangerine and The Florida Project. insn't as direct about flawed friendship. still worth a watch if you're a sean baker fan, Joe.

The Thomas Crown Affair (1968, Norman Jewinson)
I rewatched it. Honestly, this time I liked it much more. I love the New Hollywood era movies.

I watched it years ago in a VHS quality version that I found on the internet. It is good, but not as much as Deliverance. I knew it was released in Bluray recently, so I will try to get it and watched it again.

Regarding off-beat, hillbilly-related films, I also enjoyed "White Lightnin'" (2009), "Svidd Neger" (2003), "Kuutamosonaatti" (1988 ), and, of course, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Last film I saw was "There Will Be Blood" (2007)

Shutter Island, 2010 movie.

Not gonna say shit about the movie, go watch it if you haven't.

It will mindfuck you.

Have you watched "Calvaire"? It is the Belgium take on the "Crazed Hillbilly" subgenre. Very good movie and pretty disturbing.
