Legitimate Pain Issues

Hey all, happy Friday. I've got a deal here I think you good folks may be able to help me with. First a short background; I'm 56 years old and retired with 100% disability due to a bad work comp injury to my right leg/knee. I'm a child of the 70s and partied with all kinds of drugs all my life. Everything from weed, to ludes, to LSD back in my mispent youth. I used to drink a lot of whisky, but had to give it up when it started to cause me trouble about 20 years ago. Now, I smoke a little weed if I happen to be around friends that are smoking, but my favorite drugs are painkillers. I did a 5 year run on Heroin a couple decades ago, but like the whisky, it started giving me trouble. Stuff like not paying bills and losing jobs, etc... So that brings me to now, a 56 year old retired guy, with a great wife (arrow straight except for an occasional glass of wine), and 3 great dogs (labs). I have a delima in that I really like the high I get from stuff like oxycosone, benzos, etc.... I'm at a point in my health, that I actually get some pain meds on the up and up. My right knee is Fubar'd pretty bad. I'm waiting on a work comp settlement right now, and my family Doc gives me 150 10/325 percs, and 60 valiums a month, just so I can take care of me house and yard. Trouble is, with all the pill Nazi crap, it's like pulling teeth to get him to write me the stuff, even though I've been seeing him over 15 years. I know he has pressure on him, but man, you build a tolerance ya know. That, and my knee just keeps getting worse, pain wise. So the thing is, do I chance getting a pain specialist, or will he freak and cut me off? I have no idea how this stuff works. Do you just look on the web and pick out a doc that takes your insurance? I'm not saying I'm not going to party some too, but first I'd just like to get enough to really manage my pain. Thanks a heap in advance, Jay Oh, I'm in a KS subarb of kansas city. I hope this is in the right forum, if not maybe a mod could move it, thanks.

I would tell him that the dosage is not bringing the pain down to a manageable level ( do not ask for a higher dose). This is doctor wooing 101. give them leading info but NEVER ask for a higher dose, let them offer you a higher dose because of how you explained to them that you are in so much pain and can't function in life. Then say that you would like to see an interventional pain management doctor...as they can offer you interventional treatments besides drugs. Then ask what will happen if you don't like the pain doctor and want to come back.

It's a risk because he may not take you back after you try to return if it doesn't work out with the pain doc...just ask what will happen if the pain Dr sucks and you want to come back to him.

OTher pro tips:

have burns from icing so much on the injured area, when doctor asks what the burn isfrom says iceing so much bc the pain.

Have a list of consequences you have suffered due to pain. ie, missed kids recital, missed work, lost job, etc.

150 per month of perc 10s is about he max of percocets you will be likely to get from a GP, in my experience and knowledge of the field having been a pain patient and working directly in the drug testing industry. (you will be tested at a pain doc so get off all other drugs that aren't prescribed or bring someone elses piss heated).

knee pain is generally looked at as very low on the totem pole of pain conditions, definitely well below back pain due to it being farther removed from the CNS, a pain doctor explained this to me once about how the pain from extremities is processed vastly differently by the brain than pain in from injury to the spine or brain regions, basically he said its easy to tolerate pain in the extremities....so my point is that you have an uphill battle with a pain doc and should be happy with what you have...which by todays standards is a very good deal. Do put it in perspective I have had spinal surgery for chronic pain and still cannot even get an opiate script since I moved to my new state 3 months ago. Thank god for drug dealers otherwise i wouldve lose the job I moved here for just bc the pain got so bad when i started work.

LYRICA. That shit works really really well for pain. I was surprised something that isn't an opiate can work that well. Everyones pain is different but docs hand out lyrica like nothing so I'm sure you can get it (but not with the valium you are currently on which you would have to probably lower) The lyrica legit works on pain witha dose of 200 mg.

Sup my KS brothaa! I live in northwest KS but I did some prison time in Lansing, right by Kansas City.

now to your question: if you've been seeing your doc for 15 years I'm sure you've built some trust with him. Let him know you're pain isn't being controlled at your current doses. If he won't budge then ask him what his opinion would be about you seeing a pain management specialist.

Good luck! GO CHIEFS!!

Thanks gentlemen, he actually gave me a script for fent patches a couple months ago, and dropped my percs from 180, to 150. I didn't like the fent as I was scared it would drive up my tolerance, so he took me off those, but didn't raise my pills back up; shit! Then I asked about trying the fent again (figured something was better than nothing), and he didn't want to write them, argh! I blame all this anti-opioid media bullshit these days. Ya walk in the drug store 2 days early and it's like you are a slasher fricken murder guy or something. Then you do get your shit, and it some BS generic that is so old it chews like chalk. I swear, they wonder why decent God fearing folk are banging H these days. It's easier to fucking get I guess, although you couldn't tell it where I live. These jack offs get 8 bux for Norco hydros! People ODing on acet before they can get a buzz, that makes great sense. Ah, I'm just disgusted. Pay 1500 a month for health ins. and can't get decent pain relief so I can take my dogs out in the woods. Love them Hawks man!

Hey, back before I retired I did a lot of work at the pen in LV. Never had to spend anytime on the bad side of the wire though (luckily), glad you're out man.
