Julie what's your opinion on why so many voted for Brexit?
I think ultimately, the reason so many people voted for Brexit was that David Cameron supported Remain.
1) Because people are sick of being lied to by all politicians and this being a referendum, not an election, was seen as their first chance to express that dissatisfaction.
2) Because a fair percentage of people who vote Tory are Little Englanders and were always going to provide a substantial base for the Brexit vote.
3) Because Farage is a cunt and the 20% of people who voted UKIP in the last election, along with those who believed the lies of Farage, voted en masse with the Tory rump.
4) Because enough Labour voters, mired in shit at the bottom of the greasy pole, looked for the easiest blame option, immigrants.
5) Because (see 4) immigrants were an easy target. Multiculturalism and diversity are a good thing. But the policy is being abused as an economic strategy to allow business to fill the country with cheap international labour. Like at sea, but you never hear what goes on at sea, Maersk, the biggest shipping line, almost exclusively crew their ships with foreign (mostly Filipino) labour - and white European officers usually from the UK or the Netherlands. This is not done for diversity. It's done for economics. For what they can pay whom. The same thing happening on land in the UK is providing the grounds for resentment and racism. As Ricky Tomlinson said (Royal Family, Brookside) when he was in the National Front "When you are mired in shit at the bottom of the greasy pole you look around for the easiest people to blame. And the first ones you see are those struggling a few inches above you up the greasy pole".
Unless we see the total collapse of the EU in the next five years, Zephyr is wrong. We are fucked. Trade deals with Australia? Yeah, that's a way to cheap, affordable goods isn't it?
