I'll agree, words are complicated and context is everything.

One of my other Internet haunts is a site dedicated to vintage radios and TVs. Now, suppose a member there were describing a fault with a TV set:
owner of faulty TV said:
Every so often there is a sharp *CRACK* and the picture disappears, then slowly rematerialises for awhile until the process repeats itself.
It probably would not be at all out of order to say:
some old TV expert said:
Sounds like your line output tranny is breaking down!
It's quite clear from the context that it is simply being used as an abbreviation for "transformer", and no hostility is intended towards anyone. There is also a powerful psychological bonding effect with the use of in-group slang, and it's not at all implausible for someone to feel a sense of validation and acceptance over having asked a question and received an answer in jargon. (Too much of it is frowned on, though; neither blinding people with science nor baffling then with bull$#!t are considered big nor clever.)

However, I would consider it deeply problematic If I had offered a suggestion such as:
me said:
I had exactly the same symptoms on another set by the same manufacturer, and it was caused by the insulation on the line output transformer breaking down. The arc induces a pulse of electrical noise into the set's audio channel, so you are hearing it amplified as well as acoustically. The temporary loss of picture is caused by the loss of the high voltage, which then takes several seconds to recharge. This was quite a common model, and someone may still have a pattern LOPTs which will fit. You should stop using the set, or else it could damage other parts leaving it a write-off.
only to be met with a response such as:
the person with the faulty TV said:
Fuck off, you weirdo! I'm not having no filthy fucking tranny pervert freak trying to tell me what's wrong with it!

It's all precisely about context. I might even use the T-word to refer to myself, if I were trying to convey a sense of hostility towards me; just like I or some other Bluelighters might use the J-word to refer to themselves in the same way.

But the English language -- the language of Shakespeare! -- is not short of alternative words for any concept you may care to name; and if you are finding yourself increasingly desperate to find any excuse to use one particular word, maybe that could be an indication of obsessive-compulsive behaviour. If "it's only a word", why are you so desperate to use it in preference over some innocuous alternative?

Wait, even the word tranny is offensive now? Surely abbreviations are just that, a legitimate word that has been abbreviated.

your transparency should offend yourself but now I'm starting to doubt you have the capacity to even notice such things.

Yes, tranny now makes the list of words not to use.

I swear to fuck it's like being a parent to a group of adults. What the actual hell!

Hmm ..... So would you like to tell my friend Yaqoub here that "Pakistani" is a legitimate word that sometimes gets abbreviated?

"Tranny" has always been offensive when spat out as a term of abuse (Die of AIDS already, you filthy, disgusting tranny pervert freak!). It's not quite so bad when used in-group as a term of endearment (We're the Magic Tranny Seven!) -- compare in-group use of a more general insult such as bastard or cunt.

Also, some people are more sensitive than others; and some people who are normally strong of character and not quick to jump down the throat of a perceived offender might have recently had a bad experience. And you can't judge the tone of someone's voice from computer-generated text on a screen.

Bottom line: Just watch what you say, and if in doubt ..... keep your trap shut.

One only has to have the faintest wiff of you to know, no fucks were ever given.

Tranny used in certain context is offensive. A head isn't always a bellend..... Then again, some exception to the rule can be made.

There you go I made it easier for you. The highlighted section are the adjectives which are designed to offend. If you replaced Tranny with any other noun is it suddenly not offensive?

Most of my Paki mates are more offended if you called then Indians than Paki

Wait, did I just get a warning for quoting BJ?

Jesus as a man who wears a hell of a lot of make up and women's clothing I can say I'm offended.

It's strange how some people just can't get their heads around the simplest of things - if I was being listed the same way as hetromale / homomale then it's not an insult, If I was being called a homo (due to it being used in a negative context) then that would be offensive.

Yeah you did! And I dd it! Don't use demeaning verbs! For a man that went to uni how can you be so thick. NO!

You're too old to need a parent to have to tell you off. Get a grip man!

Ain't nobody got time for this shit!

Wow. First Rule of Holes much?

You are actually proving my own point for me, by demonstrating just how contrived the circumstances would have to be in order for a word not to be the most offensive one in a sentence. You wouldn't have to put in half as much effort just to use a different word already, for crying out loud! You have already given ample demonstration elsewhere on Bluelight that you do not even have the excuse of a limited vocabulary to fall back on, either.

If you make yourself a victim you will always be a victim.

Who cares what other people think of you? I can't remember the last time someone actually insulted me. Many have tried, sure, but I have long ago learnt that sticks and stones are all that matters. If you don't project your own insecurities it's hard to become a target.

If you are happy as a tranny why should it matter if one or two of the minority are shocked or dismayed. Live your life for yourself not for the approval of others. Own who you are and it's hard to be offended by anything.

I can only imagine the grief sadies kids cop at school due to her helicopter parenting.

....except when we do, depending on who's saying it.8)
YES -- that's the point! Context makes all the difference. In-group usage of an epithet as a literary device, in a self-deprecating manner, or to convey the notion of antipathy from an outsider, is not at all the same thing as casually flinging around powerful insults without regard to who might be offended. EADD has made the collective decision that the right not to be called a f****t outweighs the right to call other people f****ts.

It actually requires a conscious effort of will not to understand this.

I really don't like that last line. In fact, it offends me. Guess I'm sensitive?

Also, "Pak" is an acceptable abbreviation of Pakastani, to Pakistani descent people in the UK. Paki is found offensive.

Trans is another common abbreviation of transsexual, you doubtless know.

I happened to spend five hours wrestling in the dirt with a tranny this afternoon. Should have heard the things I said to it. It didn't complain, but it did leave me covered in slimy oil.

For fuck sake, this Aussie bellend KNOWS he's being offensive, he's just trying (and failing) to appear clever and controversial. Every one on this forum knows he as dick so guys just ignore the twat.

What annoys me most is his "tr**y" jibes are obviously aimed at bullying and upsetting Julie and she's one of the nicest people on this forum and a genuinely nice person where as this guy is a fucking douch.

If me stating what everyone know that this guy is a prick gets me an infraction I don't care. I wouldn't sit by and say nowt while one obnoxious member tries to bully one of my favourite kind harted members. Ignore him Julie...... He's a cock.
