David Cameron has demanded that porn websites introduce strict age checks or face being shut down.
The Prime Minister said that, if under-18s are not locked out from viewing explicit images, he will take action.
One option is to set up an independent regulator which could force internet service providers (ISPs) to block offending sites under the threat of fines.
While many websites currently ask for users to enter their date of birth before entering, minors can enter a different age which will allow them access.
Mr Cameron proposed that websites ask for bank details or credit card details instead.
"Our one nation government is working hard to make the internet a safer place for children," he said.
"The next step in this campaign is to curb access to harmful pornographic content which is currently far too widely available.
"I want to see age restrictions put into place or these websites will face being shut down."
In recent months ISPs including Sky have introduced filters blocking adult content, meaning users have to opt-out to view explicit content.
Internet security minister Baroness Joanna Shields said: "As a result of our work with industry, more than 90% of UK consumers are offered the choice to easily configure their internet service through family friendly filters.
"Whilst great progress has been made, we remain acutely aware of the risks and dangers that young people face online."

Then again, I do hope that people who are offended by his actions give a thought or two to their own meat consumption and the animal suffering that comes with it. No, cows, chicken and pigs aren't endangered species and nobody in their right mind will go after them with a bow and arrow, but it is fucking disgusting all the same

I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't often eat meat. When I do, I am aware of how its probably been produced and i feel pretty guilty about it. But this is modern life, what have we become?
You don't have to eat industrialised meat. There's always free range alternatives.

Then again, the meat industry isn't exactly known for sticking to the rules. A lot of products marketed as freerange are often far from it.
For me, what is perhaps more important is the fact that our meat consumption is one of the largest (some studies claim the single largest) threats to the global environment. Also, our current meat demand is simply impossible to fulfill with free range meat.
when you see the price of some stuff, like burger king chicken nuggets, you just *know* its too cheap and something horrible is behind it. I avoid all processed stuff like that.
supermarket chicken and beef seems to have two tiers, one dirt cheap and one two or three times as expensive. Are you really getting something more ethical for the extra money?
