Experiences of Addiction and the Medical Profession

Definitely not how it should be mate..your GP is meant to be "point of contact" as they say in NHS speak. Meaning he is your first port of call for serious health worries. I don't pretent to know what the solution is but the current situation ain't right at all.

Also I like working nights but then again I don't expect to live long anyway :)

Also, these days almost no-one has a family doctor anymore. You just get these big practices with numerous doctors and its just the luck of the draw which one you get. Until you've seen them you've no idea which ones are any good.

Another thing that really pisses me off is when you tell them the symptoms, and they just look it up on the internet. WTF? I've already done that, I want the benefit if your fuckin 'experience' you young twat...

You like nights! fuck that hated that shift, afters was my favourite, out every night and a lie in.

It's all 12 hour shifts anyway so nights or days makes no difference.. It's 4 on, 4 off then 3 on, 3 off... I'd rather just work permanent nights than keep changing...Plus you get 25% shift allowance which works out at a nice few quid :)

Oh, one more personal experience.. My grandmother died because the doctor said she had a 'tummy bug'when in fact it was a burst appendix. To be fair, that cunt WAS actually struck off. But too little too late ...

I hate afternnon shifts, cant stand waiting around to go work. I'd rather just get up, and go get it done. i could only manage about 6 months working nights, before i had enough. ALTERNATING SHIFTS WOULD BE WORSE IMO

Its interesting seeing the changes over the years, I live in a pit village and back in the day, the quacks actually were on your side.

Go in with a whinge, guaranteed sick note for however long you wanted%)

....and booking an appointment is hard work. Ye lucky if you get one that week. And if the receptionist is nice to ye on the phone best pinch yeself to check you aint dreaming!

Ho Ho Ho i love how these GP surgeries have a "don't abuse our staff" policy yet they're allowed to speak to you like ****.

Yes, that's a good point evey. In my experience doctor's receptionists like to think they ARE the bloody doctors - as well as talking to you like shite..

(To clarify, I never go to see a GP myself, but having young kids it's somewhat unavoidable)

Doctors receptionists are NOTORIOUSLY hard work.

They sort of control the portal that allows you to get to see a doctor or not and Jesus Christ don't they just love the power....

The worst is when u ring up to see a doctor and they ask you on the phone what's wrong with you........errr sorry but are you a doctor?..... No?.....then it's non of your fucking business what's wrong with me....I'm ringing to make an appointment with a doctor to discuss what's wrong with me not talk to you about it!!!!!!!

Fuck sake!!

My local GP has an app where you jump on and book an appointment. Free wifi in the waiting room and cup of tea if I have to wait. My private health insurance also covers free after hours house calls which is a god send when you have kids.

In all honesty I get more annoyed by know all pharmacists. Now that many of them no longer compound chemists they are nothing more than glorified bean counters that are slowly being replaced by automated vending machines around here

In this country (UK) private health insurance is not yet the norm. What are after hours house calls? :-)

Really its no wonder that other countries have a dim view of the NHS. However, I still believe that our NHS is a fantastic institution, and we were treated like royalty when we lost our first child.

The receptionists at my local surgery are actually brilliant and have often bent the rules for me so I can avoid seeing one particular doctor who is notoriously awful and seems to have a massive problem with me on general principle (she's the only person I've ever come across who I find it near impossible not to raise my voice to in sheer frustration at her infuriating approach to dealing with people). I'd also put in a good word for the nurses - especially the prescribing nurses - who are so much more approachable and understanding. Not to mention the amount of time they will spend actually listening to your symptoms and concerns rather than just telling you what they "should" be as almost every GP I've ever come across seems to do.

Most modern GPs surgeries have facilities to book appointments or order prescriptions online but the problem is a few hundred other people are trying to do the exact same.

Unfortunately many of of mere plebs can't afford private medical insurance so until we win the lottery we are stuck with the NHS....

24/7, a GP comes to your house. I prefer my own family GP but it is preferable to sitting in Emergency at 2am with a miserable child

Private insurance is pretty much compulsory here for anyone over 30 who earns over $80k. Otherwise they tax you an exa 1%. Basic cover is less than $20 a week so it's not extravagant. We have free bulk billed GP but if you want same day service expect to fork out an extra $30 out of pocket at a private clinic.
