What's Good on European and African TV v. Walking the Dead

If it was me Dan I'd go off in a huff, announce I'm leaving bluelight never to return only to show back up a week or so later with my tail between my legs, ask for my toys back and carry on as normal......

Nah....I'd never do that......oh...hang on.....shit.... :)

Scotsman: Have you seen the original British version of House of Cards? Three short series, made in 1990-ish. Absolutely brilliant (and IMO better than the US one). Add to watchlist if you haven't. :)

Original House of Cards was alright but a bit tory leaning (i couldn't stick the kevin spacey one). Now 'a very british coup' from 1988 is more my cup of tea (still up on 4od) - there was a new version made recently called Secret State that was ok, but not half as good.
 
The protagonists of HoC had to be Tories or it wouldn't have made sense!

A Very British Coup is indeed brilliant too.
 
Yeah but in outlook/basic assumptions is what i meant... to be expected as it was written by a tory (whereas vbc is written by old labour chris mullin) so horses for courses. Still interesting to watch (though like i said i couldn't stick the spacey version (the simplistic framing of issues/political assumptions just made me shout at the telly (basically a nasty west wing, and no more realistic for that) - i can't watch homeland much for the same reason as it makes me angry how wrong it all is (as in the original israeli series, seems made to whip up fear and ignorance (under cover of supposed nuance)) (i'm no fun to watch telly with ;))

With homeland, it's not the overt leanings or goodness/badness of the characters (i like an anti-hero as much as anyone), rather the assumptions taken for granted in the overall writing, and the subtle background framing of issues that gets absorbed semi-consciously (and all the more effectively because of the appearence of nuance and moral complexity in the storylines) - these assumptions/framing may be just as subconscious in the writing stage as they are watching it (i don't think so though, judging by the israeli original). I've been made to watch quite a few homeland episodes, but i've noticed it subtly skew the general conversational views about islamic terrorism away from reality in friends who watch it avidly (and who should/do know better) (like i said no fun :) - "it's just a bloody telly program!" is a common response i get)).

I gosta agree with Vurtual's basic point that the mass media informs the masses. It's why they's called the mass media after all. How many millions of people now believe methamphetamine is blue and made by schoolteachers? A fukkin shitload. Same applies to "serious" dramas reflecting "real" issues only more so cos the people watching such shows believe themselves to be well-informed not just meth-heads. Same difference in my view.

Appreciate a show for being a show but lawdys beware of mistaking that for reality in any way shape or form. I'd assume most here recogise the difference but if that were true on a global scale those shows would not exist.
 
Well, I don't feel that either of you are directing that at me, personally. I don't think meth is blue or that drone strikes are somehow a good thing or that brown people are bad. I'm not convinced that "the masses" are that dumb either.

S4 of Homeland isn't about drone strikes FUCK YEAH USA! Not in the slightest. It does examine the nuances and moral complexity involved in the proceedings, but perhaps not in as much of a documentary fashion as Vurtual would like. Meh. I don't watch these things to inform my world view. I read books too. ;)
 
I'm no a scotsman shambles - i'm welsh me. Just to row back a bit, i do watch bollocks telly and just switch off too - i don't starting waffling about gramsci and adorno in the middle of eastenders (well not too often anyway). It's just homeland gets me as it's about war that's going on now and ends up being part of how people think about what's going on (and being totally wrong) - it just seems like part of some information operation or something (similar to how 24 came along and introduced the idea of torture at just the time the warmongers wanted it). edit: i did watch most of S4 - it not being all gung-ho 'america fuck yeah' is what makes it more effective as propaganda - it has all the nuance and the baddies aren't all one dimensional, but that's then a substrate to carry all the bollocks assumptions on top of for the more sophisticated audience (fox viewers don't need persuading - they've got american sniper anyway) anyway i didn't even really dig it as drama tbh

I was actually. Based on Mr V's big-upping of Scots Independence at the time. I honestly thought Scots. Just goes to show how lily-livered my Welshman persona is :o

Also, "the masses" absolutely are that stupid. As evidence I present a Tory/LibDem coalition 8)
 
Well, if the masses assume that Scots Independence is a bad thing, and anyone for it must be Scottish, then... hah.

I wasn't suggesting the masses assumed Scottish Independence (cos we didn't get a vote) but - for the record - living South of the Border (as I always have) I'd've voted for continuing the Union. Once I live up your neck of the woods I'm Independence all the way. These things are complicated and Vurtual was very vocal on the Scots Independence things so assumed something beyond basic craven interest of avoiding UK-wide Tory governance was all ;)

The biggest problem with the masses is their apathy. I'm not sure what percentage of the entire UK electorate voted for a Tory government, but I'm sure it was a tiny minority. Of wankers, who got off their arses and voted. ;)

May the 7th can't come fucking soon enough.
 
Watched the first three episodes of Better Call Saul, I don't rate it at the moment. The story seems very disjointed.
