Kalynda Davis' friends shocked at ice arrest in China

But these people have the best legal defense, even in China: they are white.
It may save their lives.

or similar to the corby case (in indonesia), they could be used as an example to promote "operation thunder" in hopes of lowering trafficking between the two countries.

it will be interesting, under the current government and their anti-drugs agenda to see how this case plays out.

Kalynda Davis’ two-week slide into China hell: She met her co-accused on Tinder

A YOUNG Sydney woman facing a possible death sentence over drug trafficking in China met her co-accused on the dating app Tinder just two weeks before their alleged attempt to smuggle a massive haul of ice into Australia.

Kalynda Davis, the daughter of a former NSW police officer, left her home in Penrith and would not tell anyone where she was travelling last month, but told friends: “If you don’t hear from me, something’s gone wrong”.

Authorities claim the 22-year-old and Richmond man Peter Gardiner were allegedly stopped while trying to smuggle ice out of Guangzhou.

The pair flew from Sydney to China on November 5 and were scheduled to return three days later but were intercepted at the airport by Chinese authorities.

Customs officers allege they found at least 36kg of ice in the couple’s checked-in luggage during routine screening.

Friends of Ms Davis said she only met Mr Gardiner, a New Zealand citizen, on Tinder just two weeks before their trip to China.

Senior police believe Mr Gardiner may have been recruited by an organised crime syndicate in Sydney to smuggle the drugs, which had a street value of $70-$80 million.

They were both said to be “clean skins” with no criminal records in Australia.

“It went south really quickly,” said one friend, who did not want to be identified.

“She was lovely. But she was always very strong-headed and marched to the beat of her own drum.

“When I first heard what was happening I thought ‘oh my God, that happened quickly’. I heard that she was going down a rough road, but I didn’t expect that.”

Ms Davis studied at Penrith Anglican College before moving to Penrith Christian School.

She was a talented athlete and had been working part-time in retail before she embarked on the ill-fated trip to China.

“It went from 0 to 10 in a period of months. She was always so hot-headed and brash with everything so it just got out of hand so quickly.”

How lame to kill a young girl caught up in some drug trafficking! they should really just legalize all drugs! but if not the smart thing to do would be a joint task force that follows the $$$ and drugs to snag the big guys or girls involved ! or better yet go after the source in china, i wonder how much $ they were going to make ? didn't think they would pay with their lives ! just for moving gear ! Fucking drug war

And so the truth comes out after all, sounds like she's not the font of innocence she was described as after all.

Wait, why is he the predator and she the victim? They both agreed to go to China and smuggle the drugs, unless he held a gun to her head the entire time somehow, they were both equal partners in the whole mess.

I cant believe you're sticking up for these Chinese officials Crank, you should be as embarrassed as they are. Thier new national product is entrapping innocent foreigners duped by the Chinese drug barons to smuggle their product. Executing the worlds youth with research chemical garbage and firing squad, way to back the winning team Crank.

"most China law experts say that a defendants' best strategy is to draw as much publicity as they can to the case in order to embarrass officials in China's notoriously rigged criminal justice system into treating them as best as possible."

I don't see how you gathered any of that from crankinit's post. Why are people assuming she was "duped" into smuggling.
I find it more unbelievable that BL'ers are so quick to jump to the old media cliches of young white girls being dragged by evil men into sordid drug related activity.
A young drug using festival going chick who is probably naive and rash as fuck , is as likely to willingly smuggle drugs as being duped into doing it unknowingly by cartels.

A lot of people are both stupid and greedy, this can be a deadly combo if you think you can make big $ bringing in drugs from countries with the death penalty without being aware of the extensive and sophisticated means of detecting contraband.

As an HR site we shouldn't support prohibition but at the same time condoning people smuggling commercial quantities of ice (which it looks like she was doing) wouldn't set a good example.

where are your sources and data to support the very radical/borderline racist claims you have made?

excellent posts odb and crank.

while this case is still very fresh and media updates are repetitive and simply making changes to the story as "friends" of miss davis make comment on social networking platforms, establishing an opinion of true intent and definitive accountability is moot.

Drug accused Kalynda Davis home after being released by China without charge

SYDNEY woman Kalynda Davis who faced drug trafficking charges in China has been allowed to return home, it has emerged.
Ms Davis was one of nine Australians facing the prospect of being executed by firing squads in Chinese prisons for alleged drug offences.

The 22-year-old was reportedly caught trying to smuggle methamphetamine, also known as ice, into Australia from China’s drugs hub. The charges were as part an intensifying anti-narcotics sweep by the administration of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

But in sweeping developments today, it has emerged that Ms Davis has been released without charge and has now returned home to Australia after Foreign Minister Julie Bishop negotiated her release, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Great news. I guess she didn't actually know what was going on and was just naive. I doubt China would release her otherwise. One lucky woman.

She and her family and friends must be ecstatic.

Kalynda Davis, held in China on drug smuggling suspicions, returns home

Kalynda Davis, a woman believed to have been held in China on suspicion of smuggling a commercial quantity of methamphetamine, has returned home to Sydney's western suburbs.

Ms Davis' parents said in a statement released by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that they were happy to have her home in Glenmore Park.

It's believed Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop gave her support to consular officials in China who negotiated for Ms Davis' release.

Ms Davis was facing the possibility of death by firing squad if convicted of drug smuggling.

China's drug laws state that people found guilty of possessing more than 50 grams of meth or heroin, or other narcotic drugs of "large quantities", can be subject to the death penalty.

"We have always known Kalynda to be innocent of these allegations. Her return home today is a clear statement of her innocence," the statement said.

Ms Davis was reported missing by her family on November 5 but surfaced in custody in China days later with a 25 year-old Richmond man, Peter Gardner.

It has been reported that she only met Mr Gardiner weeks earlier.

Friends said they always knew she was innocent and couldn't wait to give her a "big hug" now that she was home.

"So many emotions all at once," posted Louise Richardson on Facebook. "Over the moon happy for Kalynda, her family and friends that she's finally back on Australian soil! Can't wait to eventually see her and give her a great big fat hug!"

A fellow student from Penrith Anglican School, Sam Cuff, posted online: "So happy you're home kalynda can't wait to give you a big hug."

The 22-year-old's parents, Larry and Jenny Davis, thanked the Chinese authorities for their "professional and honourable investigation" into the incident.

Mr Davis, an ANZ banker and former police officer, engaged solicitors in Sydney and China to help negotiate his daughter's release.

It is not known whether Mr Gardiner, the man who was arrested with her, has also returned. Ms Davis' parents said they would continue to pray for him and his family.

Ms Davis was initially accused of smuggling 75 kilograms of the drug "ice" out of the China. The pair were stopped at the airport trying to leave Guangzhou.

Consular staff and the family of the young woman had closed ranks on Friday in the hope of minimising publicity on the case.

This should have been remarkably apparent when you quoted me

At this point I have nothing but respect for China. From the wisdom shown by this decision, this nation has both my respect and admiration. How could I not.

I'm not backing Chinese drug policy or those who carry it out, I'm just saying that there were two people who went there to smuggle ice, and they're both equally responsible for their actions. Nobody held a gun to her head, she chose to go to China with her user/dealer/whatever boyfriend and risk getting caught in return for the drugs/cash just as much as he did, and she should be held equally responsible for her actions.

Kalynda Davis home: 22-year-old allowed to leave China after drug allegations are dropped

It is understood Chinese officials accepted Ms Davis did not have any knowledge of the drugs and agreed to Australian requests for her release and immediate return home to Australia.

Ms Davis repeatedly told consular officials she had no knowledge of the drugs.

Hmm.... pretty (ish) wealthy white girl with police connections, has the foreign affairs minister and consular officials negotiate her release.
I wonder if that would be the case if she was a ordinary working class male.

There you have it!

Wow, I was not expecting that. She must feel like the luckiest person in the world right now. I can't even imagine...

Nope, not a chance, also probably not if she'd been a minority. But the world will bend itself backwards for a pretty rich white girl.
