EADD Film Recommendations v5 - TBC

Back from a days outing which included seeing Interstellar

One word:

Epic. =D

A few more words:

It's a very long film at 2hrs 50 odd, which I was a bit unsure about going in. It starts off a little slow, then get's edge of your seat, then slows down & builds right up to edge of your seat again to a satisfying ending. Or some combination of the above at least. As a whole, it really is an epic & easily the best film I've seen this year. Do not miss it!

Most recent viewing has been Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac (yes I did do the LVT's... bit so you didn't think I should be posting in the pr0n thread :p). Looooooooong film released in two volumes, finished the first part last night and is shaping up well.

Basic plot is that a man finds a girl battered and bruised in the street and takes her back to his for tea and whilst recovering she regales him with tales of her "shameful nymphomaniac" (as she sees it) past whilst he chips in with observations and no judgement. For me the theme - whilst overtly sexual - speaks more to addiction in general whether it be sex, drugs or rock 'n' roll (or whatever else). There's not much to say on plot cos it really is theme and performance (of various kinds I suppose) over plot. It's very stylishly done with some excellent performances (especially Charlotte Gainsbourg as the titular (*titters*) self-proclaimed nymphomaniac. Christian Slater and Uma Thurman also stood out for me in the first part.

Got Vol. II to go and will report back as and when but, unless it suddenly falls apart, it's already getting a recommendation.

(probably best to point out that it does have some "hardcore" sex but it is very far from porno stuff, used sparingly and suit the honesty of the film itself)

bearlove: yeah definately disturbing. Opened my eyes to the political history of the country though for sure.

If it had been filmed in any other way, I would have probably switched it off tbh. It was so candid, almost entertaining (for want of a better word) but then I found myself hating myself for finding it almost 'amusing'. Mass murderer having a hissy fit about the choreography of a musical about him killing people?

Oculous is a good one, really enjoyed it.

If you get the chance, watch 'Housebound' - Comedy / Horror but with enough of both elements to actually work.

The other one that I've enjoyed lately was 'The maze runner' - can't say much about it without spoiling it but worth a watch.

I must get to see Interstella before it leaves the cinema as I think you will miss so much by watching that at home.

The score is simple yet amazing, the bass in the tense moments is shattering... really builds the tension. Wouldn't get that at home.

Haha - you taking the piss ! What's wrong with my home TV set up ? jke (actually I'm in dire need of a new tv, been going to buy one for about a year but I'm simply too lazy)

Glad to see another interstellar fan.
i think that movie's cinema experience is what it mustve been like seeing 2001 in the cinema. Really wanting to see that on some kind of mind altering substance...

Watched dracula recently. absolutely fucking awful, the director needs shooting. its not often i rate something so shitely, but that film is so bad, utter mess, worst film ive seen for years along with the new transformers

Finally got around to seeing 'Interstellar' ! It's a fantastic movie.

Spoilers
NSFW:
I watched that time travel movie the other week (Predestination) so sort of guessed the movie half way through

Another couple that I've watched that I would recommend - I origins and Nightcrawler !

Did i mention How to Train Your Dragon 2?
Very nice movie, quite actiony and unmissable if you were a fan of the first one :)

Phew, for a minute there I thought you were referring to Werner Herzog's adaptation... In which case much argument would've ensued. Haven't seen the sht version you're presumably referring to so can't comment.

My film rec to EADDers (copied and pasted from another thread, sorry mods) is:

Kind Hearts and Coronets. It's this incredibly dark British comedy made in the late 1940s about a guy who decides to murder the eight people ahead of him in line for a Lordship.

I swear, although it's nearly 70 years old, it's one of the darkest comedies ever made. It works both as black humour (the internal monologue of the murderer, through whose eyes the story is told, is utterly priceless), and as a satire of the English class system. Also Alec Guinness plays every single one of the murder-ees, showcasing his range as an actor. The actual acts of murder themselves are also hilarious.

Plus, on a drug-related note, one of Guinness' characters is a secret alcoholic, which the protagonist exploits to perpetrate a particularly darkly comic murder, which will have anyone with substance issues laughing their tits off.

A strange horror film 'Tusk' - it's a bit 'Tales of the Unexpected' with some very random scenes.

Its very weird in a comedy sense (and the less you know about prior to watching the better).

@ Shambles:

We watched both episodes of Nymphomaniac, on your recommendation, and absolutely loved them. Funny and weird and everything else an EADD regular should like. Cheers. :D

On that subject:

Danish film director Lars von Trier fears he will not make any more films now he is no longer taking drugs or drinking alcohol.

"No creative expression of artistic value has ever been carried out by former alcoholics and drug addicts," Von Trier told the newspaper.

:D

Also, :(

Glad you approved of Nymphomaniac. I wasn't expecting much reaction to it so always gratifying to know somebody somewhere reads the drivel I shovel onto t''interwebz <3

I must admit I was disappointed with Part II after the first part. Whilst it did "fit" it also had none of the style or panache of the first part and seemed kinda clunky and oversimplistic to me. Then again, that spanking segment was quite nice =D

Watched two this week:

First a dystopia, The Giver - "In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the "real" world."
NSFW:
Not bad paint-by-numbers dystopia if you like that sort of thing. I found it irritatingly derivative, and shallow and twee in its symbolism (it's basically like a certain paint advert), if it was even symbolism. It all felt a bit 'randian' to me (goes with the territory i spose)

Then watched this near future story, How I live Now - "An American girl, sent to the English countryside to stay with relatives, finds love and purpose while fighting for her survival as war envelops the world around her."
NSFW:
I thought this was a much better film - much more engaging characters than the last one (the star is the girl from Lovely Bones a bit older who does a good job at being more gothy). The backdrop of the war kicking off in europe is well portrayed, though never explained directly.

Watched several films recently but most were fairly forgettable so recommending Belladonna of Sadness. Early 70s psychedlic, largely watercolour anime film. Very fairytale in structure and quite sexually explicit in places. This linky may or may not be allowed but it's such an obscurity I kinda doubt anybody is chasing up the copywrite these days. Well worth a watch for those into anime (or indeed philosophical hentai I suppose) or fans of general weird shit.

I think 90% of the posts in these types of threads are just people lazily throwing a link up to show how much they're in tune with the zeitgeist. There's not much critical discussion of anything. :D

Your longstanding reputation as a twisted and cultured weirdo (i.e. one of us) was what made me seek out this title. Plus anything by LVT has to be worth a look, god bless him. :)
