Gibberings CLXXXI - Is it Christmas yet?

damn that infographic is a bit disturbing tbh... especially since it seems this century is no different than the previous... not really looking forward to what the future holds in this respect...

Future is looking pretty good really. All the usual people killing each other in exorbitant numbers and horrible ways stuff has gone down year on year since the year dot more or less (wobbles here and there and only when taken as a proportion of overall population not necessarily in absolute numbers). You and I (and everybody else) have about a tenth of the likelihood of dying by violence as somebody born a century earlier.

The only real reason people nowadays feel more fearful of violence and wars and general horridness is because they are so much rarer and thusly much more newsworthy. People become immune to hearing of unimaginable numbers of people dying in back to back wars as has been the case for very large parts of history - it's not news it's sames. Nowadays ("Western") losses in wars are so relatively unusual they're virtually reported individually - certainly any major incident and a "major incident" is likely measured in the tens or dozens at most these days. Of course it's a bit different when reporting the far bigger losses on "The Baddies" (can't believe our governments actually use that phrase 8)) which are closer to the mass casualties no longer experienced by The West... but even then still quite some way short - especially when considering how much more lethally effective modern weaponry is.

There's a similar story when it comes to more or less all the horrid, scary stuff that can happen - crime (especially violent crime) and disease. All gets less and less lethal year on year. We really should be far more optimistic about the future. Even population growth is set to level off in the not too distant future as birth rates drop (this is already happening incidentally - another rarely reported fact) in areas that are starting to become wealthy enough that people don't feel the need to pop out a dozen hoping one or two might make it to adulthood. The future is bright - don't buy into the bullshit that suggests otherwise :)

That aside, morning all :)

Yes, morning. Am a bit slow to start of a day sometimes even when I have been awake for hours.

kota: that camera is my best find today. I wish it had an audio channel so I could say some insults at the subject.

Or a couple of thousand New Yorkers, whereupon it becomes The Worst Atrocity Ever Committed. Though that wasn't officially an act of war as such.

Can't say I've ever really checked but I'd presume you'd need to be a state to officially go to war with a state. Then again, it's not like minor matters like laws regarding war are paid much heed unless it suits whichever state can afford to choose to ignore them. Although you also raise another good point, acts of terrorism are going down too.

Im truly grateful that i dont have to do the whole CV/interview stuff. Im awful at those generic "what can you bring to the company" type of questions.

Ive had one interview in my life which was to work in a hotel when i was younger.

It was in a big conference room and other interviews were taking place all around. I could hear all these others giving bullshit answers to the bullshit questions. I just had a blank face throughout when i was asked those bullshit questions and the interviewer just filled them out for me, the only one i amswered was "what hours can you work", to which i answered "any".

I got the job.. :) i loved that job to, horrible pay but it was alot of fun.

Oh, hang on, they only ever made sure to target 'insurgents', didn't they? 8)

=D Ceres..

Genuine congratulations, kudos and the rest though. I thought you'd been quiet of late.
Oh nah, haven't started them yet.. have just been quiet with a combination of shenanigans and shenanigan-induced depression.

they did say experience not necessary, but I guess they went ahead and hired someone with experience. that or my CV is scruffy. :/
Mm.. even if you don't have "experience" you can probably blag some on your CV somehow, even if it's a bit tenuous.

Also, every woman in Manchester under 45 with an IQ above 80 aspires to be a journo. If that's a reflection of the rest of the country then it's no surprise.
Really? I would pay good money to not be a journo, or any sort of professional writer. Saying this as someone that was a professional writer for 4 years (which wasn't anything I aspired to, just ended up doing accidentally..)

Would you really pay good money not to be a journo? Gimme £500 and I'll grant you your wish. ;)

You're not the type of person I'm thinking about. I'm thinking more of the type of women I complain about incessantly but would still probably sleep with (or sleep with again) given the chance.

You know the type...

The journalism students at college really were a special form of wanker. Dunno what it was about 'em but they really did seem to consider themselves higher beings of some kind. Didn't mix with anybody. Presumably too busy creating Truth or summat.

Tis quite a kewl term. Makes 'em sound like a tidal force of nature. Suitably vague and a bit scary-sounding. Not especially human either which always helps when dehumanising folk.
