..what the title said. Apparently the Green Partys' Caroline Lucas actually managed to get a debate planned, so it may well be worth a watch. It's due to start somewhere between 11:45 and 12:30.

"Caroline Lucas, the Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion, and a few other brave parliamentarians are therefore to be congratulated on today securing the first Commons debate in decades about drugs. It will be interesting, and heartening, to see how many of our elected representatives are prepared to speak up on behalf of constituents who have been so wilfully misled about the war on drugs"

Let's see how this goes.

Obviously there's not much hope of immediate policy change, but it's remarkable that there's going to be a debate of this kind at all.

Kudos to the woman with the constituency made up of entirely of crusties with dogs on strings. :D

Yeah, it's on now.. it's the result of that petition that got over 100k signatures. I doubt anything will come of it, but it's a start..

So they are at least going to have to discuss the findings to some degree instead of a simple 'drugs = bad. fin'. I still don't hold much hope but any exposure of the facts in the mainstream media is a good thing right?

Yeah.. all Caroline Lucas is pushing for is a thorough examination of evidence. But there's only a 2.7% turnout, which is depressing.

Not shocking really unfortunately.

Hopefully there will be a summary somewhere later, I can't be bothered to sit & watch this. Interesting point by the guy who is currently speaking about drugs coming in & out of fashion mind.

^ I think that's just speculation at the moment. Hopefully.

And this isn't so much a debate as a load of cross-party agreement that the current policy doesn't work.

Who saw that coming?

Lucas said that there was no point in banning Legal HIghs because that will simply drive the hunt for new chemicals. She accepted that the ban on popular drugs drives the Legal Highs scene.

I wouldnt be surprised if some sort of Head Shop regulation might be on the cards, & given the danger posed by some RCs & Legal Highs, I'm all for it. Why on earth these outlets are allowed to retail dangerous, ill-researched chemicals on the High Street whilst cannabis remains illegal is utterly beyond me.

Blimey. I don't know who Stephen Phillips is, but he certainly knows his stuff and just talked about entactogens.

I agree that some sort of regulation is needed, especially where kids are concerned.

Aye! Commons votes to review policy. Jackpot! Excellent debate. Never seen anything like, never thought I would. Unanimous. The war of drugs has failed. Unfkblvbl!

So I was browsing the articles on the BBC news website about drug legislation etc and thought i'd have a read of the comments as they are usually good for a laugh. Came across this belter.

This is a crazy idea. Gordon Brown had to re-classify Cannabis after it was found that criminals where breeding lethal strains that can kill after just a few reefers. When you are hooked a person will do anything to find the money, prostitution and criminal activity is the norm for these unfortunates. It is no accident that as drug taking increases in the population so does paedophilia.
