Magic Mushrooms/ Psilocybin in the UK

was reading in the local paper this morning that 84 people have all ready been hospitalized this year with mushroom poisoning

I'd imagine they have picked the wrong shrooms, as the 'fantastic fungus' is either not growing this year or is hiding itself from I, and most people. I live 200m from marshland, which is a few metres from cattle, sheep and horse farmland with a stream nearby - perfect conditions, only a handful of people pick it, too. Alas, none so far. Will check again on Monday.

Aye, I see your point Bear. It's just that it's much easier to die of mushroom poisoning than it is of alcohol poisoning.

It takes a lot of booze to kill somebody, but just one mushroom can potentially be deadly.

I dunno.. I do think you have to be a little stupid/ill-informed to die from mushroom poisoning. I can't really see how anyone would go shroom picking without knowing how to recognise anything poisonous/deadly and their tricksy lookalikes.

(Feel free to quote me on this when I manage to kill myself from foraging.. ;) )

Its not though is it ? Yes one mushroom could potentially kill you, but so can one heavy session. mushrooms are available for a few months of the year and a small percentage of the population actively goes seeking them. The problem with a lot of the mushrooms is its before any symptoms show up - it's already too late (can be a few days later).

A heavy session takes all day / night and the chances are you'll be incapacitated well before the lethal poisoning stage. It takes some work and the clear intent to get horribly pissed, whereas accidentally picking a dodgy mushroom is frighteningly easy.

I'm not saying drinking's safer, I'm just saying that it's easier to misidentify a mushroom than it is to chug enough vodka to be seriously in danger.

I see it as drinking a pint of beer, which turned out to be 90% Methanol/IPA with flavourings.
(Beer being psilo-X and the IPA being a Death's Head).

I think I have misunderstood your posts 8( - you really underestimate the amount of alcohol needed to kill you via poisoning. The fact that thousands of people do this every day of every year - means the chances of death by alcohol is higher than death by mushrooms. Yeah one pint will not kill you - one mushroom 'could'.

The last statistic I can find on alcohol poisoning deaths is (in England only) 360, in 2011, according to Drinkaware.

If you take into account the number of people who binge drink every weekend, it's a tiny number. I know it's still dangerous (and 700 people a week are hospitalised) but y'know?

Its a bit of a never ending loop ? People are more likely to die from Alcohol than Mushroom poising. People are more likely to get admitted to hospital due to alcohol than mushrooms.

How can we see that - % of people seeking only magic mushrooms, who ingested a fatal mushroom died - compared to % of people out for a laugh consumed enough alcohol to kill them.

That's not people picking magic mushrooms tho - I think that's pretty much exclusively middle-aged foragers because there's a bit of a foody mushroom craze this year.

I was going to say pretty much the same Issy..

On radio 2 there was a large segment about foraging, obviously no chat about the swirly variety. As i was listening to this guy hype the whole forage for your dinner i was thinking this is bound to end with more people ill/dead. He did emphasise the dangers.... but, people are daft, y'know...

Been raining suddenly after it being fairly dry and none since a few grams found early season...hopefully that'll bring up a few :) it's been a long, long time...had my first trip for first time in 2 months 2 weeks back, that's the longest I've ever went since starting... :(

Oh gods.. it sounds like it's going to be a bad year for the mushroom groups on Facebook. "Hey, I found this in my garden, can I eat it?" 8)

Im not sure what species of fungi you were consuming but liberty caps dont grow in your local park my friend.

They do here! You're not looking hard enough. Any patch of grass with the right conditions can be good. Had a bumper year off the bowling greens once, they were covered with huge ones.

Has anyone got any experience picking in savernake forest in Wiltshire. Its a popular spot , and a couple of years ago waas the place they was sending police patrols about. If anyones got any nice spots, that would be great. Thanks :)

Savernake Forest seems an odd place for libbies to grow. I suppose there is some grass land around the forest that they might grow but isn't doesn't sound there natural habitat, guess they do though from what you said.

I'm thinking of a trip to the black mountains as it is pretty much a guaranteed spot in season and is a beautiful place as well. I know of spots locally but it is hit and miss and it is always disappointing coming back empty handed.
