This is why I get confused (honestly) - doesn't having a grave sort of tie the living to the dead? Yeah if you popped into the cemetery on the way to the pub, and did 'off for a pint' then great - but people don't do that, they tend to go to grieve the loss.

Day one - loads of people about - half of them haven't spoke to the person for years but there crying ? They have spent 50£ on a bunch of flowers, that 50£ sent to the person alive could have really helped.

Month one - 95% of the above do not go to the grave.

the 5% - the person is dead, I should really go and put flowers for them.

Then its special occasions -- birthdays, in memory etc

I know people on here have lost loved ones, I am in no way bashing on their feelings or being disrespectful, I simply stating my thoughts on the matter.
 
i do think it ties the living to the dead. im not going to mention the people going to funerals just for the sake of it, or out of pity or guilt.
but for a normal person, having a place to go to to commemorate a loss may be a good thing. like having your negative emotions, sadness all in one place, instead of everywhere and feeling haunted.
yes, you go to the grave one a year or something, and put flowers. but you remember, and then you leave them behind, for a while at least. i think it may help some with mouring and moving on.

i suspect this is highly dependent on the local culture of the dead/ death and of course religion if applicable. some may get more out of the experience than others

still, as far as subjects go, even for photography, you could do a lot worse than a cemetery

It very well could be a place to commemorate - and this action is what eludes me. Of course I have lost people that I love - would I go to their graveside, no. To do what ? remember the good times - can do that in an instant, to grieve their loss, again can do that in a instant.

Yeah - they make a great place for photo's !

it's a shame that jim morrison's grave gets so much attention - pere lachaise is such a beautiful graveyard with so many wonderful headstones, monuments and crypts (and many other dead celebrities).

i dont know if thats what i would call it... personally ive got loads of photos from the site, and indeed the place can be a whole day in itself, trying to figure out who is where in case you have a plan, or just looking around and spotting by chance various persona. and while many go there for this particulr tomb, there is a (very real) chance they may encounter other recognizable names along the way and stop and think...

@ bear - indeed not everyone needs a grave to commemorate. just like not everyone feels they need a church to pray in, or a paper to say they are married to a partner. each persons needs for validation / acceptance are different..
also, great photos, the lower one is just a nice balance of real and abstract
 
Yea graves are for the living. Our deceased are in heaven so they are not bothered either way. But it's a lovely way of remembering people n to ease the grief somewhat for some people.

I can never find my Nain n Taid's graves but when I went to the graveyard to see my Taid, a year after his death - I'll never forget the lovely calming feeling that came over me - and stayed with me the whole day. I honestly believe that my Taid was with me that day (this was in 1999 n my Nain Peggy was still alive back then).

I was upset because I could not see his grave n I think it was my Taid's way of saying "It's OK, I'm here!" There was nothing more lovely that that extreme calmness that filled me that day n stayed with me the whole day long. Was lovely.

When I die I don't want to be buried. I'm chlostrophobc n have a fear of holes n being buried alive. I want to be cremated n my ashes scattered over the lovely canal I love walking along.

OK that's enough of my morbid talking for today :D

I sound really cold in this thread, not meant that way at all and as you say each to their own.

I got some great photos in that cemetery - glad you liked them.
