The Government's Stance On The People

This isn't really a trip report, but I need this to be heard by anybody who is on here. I have to say that the government is really basically just a group of rich people trying to make money. They essentially just get voted in only because there is nobody else to choose from and fuck people over pretty badly. I have several problems with the American oligarchy. One is that the people have little say. I believe that George Bush only got elected due to rigging of the elections in both 2000 and 2004. Anyways, for the solid evidence of this. The 2000 election was determined by the supreme court. That says it all right there. Gore won by a couple thousand votes but the supreme court decided otherwise on a technicality. If anything, i'd think that they'd benefit from more people, as the higher you are in an economic food-chain, the more benefits you get from those beneath you.

Connect these two concepts. When you say these "non-elites" are using resources, you mean that they're buying these resources. What are the "elites" (ruling class) going to do with the Earth's resources without a huge population to extract, process, manufacture, distribute and most importantly, buy them? They would be useless materials. A vast population in itself is a very important resource, labor. It's probably the most important resource available as it is required to extract, to process, to manufacture, to distribute and to buy.

The ruling class is the ruling class because the rest of us make it possible. The shrugging Atlas concept is nonsense, really.

One can look to colonial economies where local elites and metropolitan rulers consume at extremely elevated rates, employing numerous servants, etc. I would expect such configurations to be more unstable than economies tempered by Keynsian stimuli aimed at wide consumer-classes, as such stimuli tend to stave revolt, ideologically and materially.

that's not exactly the point i see in shrugging atlas though, i definitely interpret it far more as "I'd rather live far more modestly in a society w/o a single moocher/looter, than be a god of the society of moochers/looters" Whatever you think of the morality of that, it's what rand was trying to get across:

I think this makes a lot of sense and that, for better prosperity amongst the ruling class, it's better to have less inequality. That can sound counter-intuitive, but it's not a short-term, "gimme more pie right now" idea, it's "i get more pie in the end, if we grow a larger pie, and that pie grows faster if i don't take it all this minute"
My example, using slaves as the extreme, wasn't meant to buck that idea, but just to be a different extreme contrasted against de-population.. i still think the point came across though, even though bardo just saying 'labor' is far more efficient ]
