Probably because I said I have one. Yes there's no definitive proof either way - I'm with Owen on that one - but, in my opinion, I feel that I have one because since I was 3, I've never had interests I've had "obsessions," n I tend to fixate on one thing or I feel complete emptiness, like an endless void. I feel it's a curse.

But nonetheless , thinking of The Four Agreement "Dont take it Personally," so I won't.

As I said to SHM - let's agree to disagree?

Edit: i love Google scholar but you need a uni for any more than the abstract.

Yeah it has touched a nerve, I find it really irritating when people present their own opinion as fact, irrespective of what it may be.

Frankly on the one hand I find it amusing that people are getting so defensive behind their own beliefs on this particular subject because there really is little to no evidence pointing in either direction (if anything it points away from your position but I don't know enough to actually make a statement). On the other hand, it's kind of sad because this is supposed to be a hub of useful information and discussion and well.......

When September 2013? Sorry to hear you don't enjoy it no more. I've actually started to like it here again now. And this Gibz has nearly ran out so it's filling up again with people n some interesting debates.

When applied to rationalising drug use through 'self-medication' of self-diagnosed 'illnesses', then yes, I agree.

This post contains wording that promotes the subject in a subjective manner without imparting real information. Please remove or replace such wording and instead of making proclamations about a subject's importance, use facts and attribution to demonstrate that importance.

It's really not a touchy subject, addiction is one subject I've spent enough of my life discussing to not be offended by any particular opinion, I'm unlikely to hear anything I haven't heard before (and actually, that's the stuff that I would really like to hear). Like I said, I don't fall down on either side of the fence in this discussion, I don't think there's enough evidence in either direction to claim either the existence of or lack of an 'addictive personality'.

If I say something like 'peer-reviewed academic research', it's because I'm interested in accessing the information that presumably someone espousing a particular opinion must have to be espousing said opinion if it's not a clear cut subject. I'm always interested in learning more on certain subjects especially if it's something that is either a definitive statement on something where I have a differing opinion or no opinion as of yet. For instance, a study showing a clear link would between OCD and addiction would be an interesting thing to read because as far as I'm aware they have nothing to do with each other.

As for the threads......well it's not me that decided to turn this into a social forum.

Why the need to be so defensive just because someone has challenged you on your belief?

I'm not being defensive at all. I wouldn't even say I was "challenged on a belief". I hit out with a half formed opinion in the middle of making my breakfast. I don't have any solid "beliefs" on this particular subject.

Just seems a bit weird how you've went off on one over this particular subject, when you're usually totally fine with people's bullshit opinions. That's all.
