the state of the uk dance scene

Brighton has been shit for years now. I'm in my 20s and haven't been out there for 3 years or so. Audio is OK, but not that druggy so is a bit weird. Also fucks me off when I buy tickets for stuff and they give free entry if sales are poor... Used to be a proper 7 night a week city for clubbing, now I can't even find a house/dance night on a Friday..!

Stick to London. Ministry of Sound stilly favourite but you do need to be a bit careful at the door. I did get spotted licking my finger before a dab and doorman just made the "I'm watching you" sign with his eyes and shook his head

There is a whole generation of people younger out there now who are not into house music religously like my generation was. To them its old music for an older generation, just like how i percieved my parents being into rock and roll etc when i was young. Thats the way it is.

You can actually go to some club nights and dance events now and see just as many people looking like there not on drugs as there is on drugs, that was never the case years ago.

This is the buy a shot with every round of drinks generation and likes RnB. Of course there are people of that age into or getting into what were into also but its not such a big thing for the majority.

it's easy (and perfectly 'valid') to bemoan the current state of affairs (of anything) and nostalgically complain that things were better back in the day.

if you think there's an issue with the scene, what are you doing to make it better?

changing lightbulbs > moaning about darkness and all that :)

alasdair

Personally I'm long past the point being jaded with old jaded clubbers, I don't even mind them now.

I dont have any issues with the current state of affairs i sometimes work in a very vibrant 500 capacity venue in Shoreditch with top quality music and busy every Fri and Sat night religously... And im not being biased when i say that, i pick and choose where i want to work, not the other way round. If it was pants i wouldnt want to be associated with a venue or promotion.

Turmills was good but to many people live in the past... It was not much more than a license to print money.

Ive been on the london club scene since 1988 and Turnmills although good certainly wasnt my favourite venue in London. The End, The Cross, London has had many excellent venues, and these days its just as much about the promotion as it is the venue.

I hate the Aquarium Club in Old Street, ok i dont hate it but its not all that, the sound systems ok on the main floor, but last May i co promoted an event for someone else there on a bank holiday and it was excellent. Had nothing to do with the venue at all, it was all about the promotion.

hang on, there was a big nightclub in Coalville? as in Leicestershire Coaville? I'm from leicestershire and coalville is known for having nothing there and being full of inbreds.

Didn't passion also play out of Coalville? This was around the time of the hotdog vender wars 1999.

I stayed clear of that shit hole and spent my early mornings at Goodbye Cruel World. You couldn't beat a dance floor with Snow White and seven actual midgets or transvestite fire breathers whilst paying 2 pills for a fiver

Turnmills was better than The Cross and The End IMO. Dee Dee, you ain't the authority on clubbing just cos you work in the scene....you are a bit of a know-it-all twat actually

I don't often agree with you but you're talking sense there.

Fortunately there is nothing wrong with "the scene" round here. If anything there is too much, my shitty bank balance can't deal with it.

I think dee dee is just a bit cynical about it all, as he's probably seen the business side of it more than your average punter.

I'm probably really pathetic but christ you still want to party past 6am? I'm 22 and by 6-7am all I want is a benzo, weed, some booze and a lie down.

if I drop around 10-11 that is.

Lol yeah if I don't have any commitments I'll go home when they turn the music off....sunday night, monday night.....

I don't go out much any more though.

Woah, i shant flame the situation anymore than neccesary, but someones clearly got out of bed the wrong side today. Last time i checked i remember saying a venue you liked was good but not my favourite. Touchy or what! :\

XOYO in London can be good on the right night, although I do feel proper old in there. I've been to so many warehouse parties in the last few years that I just got fed up with them. I actually like a nice comfy chill out area, nice toilets, decent bar etc, you don't get any of that in a warehouse. London doesn't have many actual clubs these days, not great ones like Turnmills, The Cross etc. anyway.

Going to this today, I'll let you all know how it was:

Got some chupa chup pills to try out, never had em before

yeah that was another regular haunt, used to host passion and storm, both good nights and only half an hour down the moterway from me.

The comment on big clubs taking up prime city centre space was spot on. Thats whats led to the que club polava in birmingham which has been rattling on for 10 years now. October 2003 - all events moved or cancelled as the que, a listed building, is earmarked for sale and development into flats. 2006 - a local dj manages to blag her way into the building to have a look at the changes as she used to promote a regular night in the place, flashback. She returns astounded with a series of photos showing the main room completely untouched save for afew bits of disrepair. 2007 finds the que reopen and it has stayed open since, despite the redevelopment remaining on the cards. Every year they say thats the end of that, every other event the building hosts is advertised as 'LAST EVER EVENT @ THE QUE', but open it stays.

Weak pills, or so they seemed, apparently around the 130mg mark, dropped one a few weeks ago and felt next to nothing off it although my pupils did dialate, tried a nintendo allstar last weekend which is apparently around 130 and was off my tits

I like the red chupas but they are pretty weak...perfect for at home pillaging though. Not so sure how just the one would work in a club environment etc...Correct me if I am wrong but didn't someone say they had tested at 100mg ish? Could be wrong. They do feel nice and clean though.

OOOH and just to try and get back on track I loved The Cross..and Turnmills and Heaven and Club Koo and even The Wag and Fabric all had their positives ...back in the day eeek codger alert.

Accidentally ended up at The Cross one weekend with my Mum in tow and it was fetish night...SHE got invited to the V.I.P area and I didn't and some girl decided to show my Mother her clit piercing in the loos...must have been about 1994ish cripes you can't make this shit up.

So yep I am too old to be in this thread and will exit now..rarely go to clubs now.:!
