What's Good on European and African TV v. Walking the Dead

I'm kinda gonna go a little off-topic in this bit so I'll stick it in a spoiler tag but my piracy views are:
- If it's music I'll download it I'm not paying today's prices for a single or even 11 songs, I'd pretty much just listen to radio if it wasn't for piracy. That said though most of my music I listen to on Youtube or Soundcloud, usually too lazy to bother actually downloading it, so I don't pirate all that much when it comes to tunes.

- If it's a movie/TV then it can go either way, I think it's worth the 15-25 quid for a nice box set of a great series, or 10-15 for a great movie - but that said since I'm not exactly rolling in dough and I watch a lot of TV and films I'll be downloading most of it either way.

- If it's a game well if it's one of those annoying ad and dlc-funded games then to hell with even playing it, but other games the entirety of the money comes from sales, so my rule is: Pirate everything (unless I really can't) BUT then buy the games that I really enjoy even though I've already got them downloaded and playable, some might think it's a waste of money but I like to give back to a good developer, in the world of game devs a lot of them really don't make that much money, and some of my favourite games back in the day were made by studios who're now defunct because they closed down due to lack of money from low sales. I'd say about 50% of my games are pirated and 50% bought, the ones I haven't bought usually get installed or left there though because if they were half decent I'd have bought 'em by now.

- If it's a book I'd always prefer to buy it, nothing beats holding it in your hand, no ebook can substitute!

I don't think piracy is wrong in any way, it's there, it's not gonna disappear, and most people have better stuff to spend their money on than TV, games, music. No-one's stealing anything, just making free copies of it. As they say I might not want to steal a car but I sure as hell would download a free copy if I could! ;)

That said I think if you have a brand or artist you wish to support it's good to buy their shit, just spend money in a useful way, i.e. imo if you like a band it's better to buy concert tickets and get yourself that awesome live experience that may be expensive but will give you memories to keep, than waste money on over-priced CDs. Same as it's worth the extra money to go see a film when it comes out in the cinema just for the experience, or buy pre-alpha for a game that looks like it's gonna be great just to get in early and have a chance to try it out, while helping support the end result.

Anyway as for what I'm watching right now, Game of Thrones for what's on TV, and I know I'm really late to the party but I just started watching The Wire too, dunno why I put it off for so long, really good series and I highly recommend it to anyone who never gave it a watch. Same goes for GoT unless you're not a fan of fantasy type stuff (without giving any spoilers, it starts off pretty low on the fantasy stuff, mostly your regular medieval type drama show but adds in some magic and monsters and such later on).

I know there have been a lot of posts in here about people catching up to recently finished shows or shows from a while back so I was wondering, since we usually discuss current TV shows in here, what about finished TV shows and TV shows that started a while back and aren't currently airing but are available to buy/download/watch online now - what are some of your favourites?

I'll say some of mine would be:
- Breaking Bad
- Dexter
- The Event (though I'm just shy of finishing what was released, and unfortunately it got cancelled so this is an unfinished show)
- Lost (I know, there's some questionable plot elements including some stuff towards the end but honestly I think even including all that it's still a great show if you like a show that gets you thinking sharp and questioning everything)
- Taken (Not the recent kidnapping movie, the sci-fi TV show! Got started watching it not long ago, got it on DVD here and need to watch more soon, really good stuff)
- The Mentalist
- House M.D.
- Heroes

(probably missing a ton, keep remembering names)

Gonna check out True Detective now. :)

Same here, those ebook things are good and convenient but much prefer holding a book

some of my faves would be

- Breaking Bad
- Band of Brothers
- The Sopranos
- Game of Thrones
- True Detective
- Sherlock

Same as me - I've genuinely tried and just can't get on with it - any level of that Dungeon and Dragons shit is too much for me.

haha, i know what you mean, but i dont know if its the 'fantasy' element per se that is putting me off; i mean i loved Pan's Labyrinth and The Golden Copmass and you cant get much more fantastical than those.

I think it may be the apparently overdone generic northern english accents to appeal to the American market (every "northener" appears to speak like a Yorkshire cliche), and overdone concepts of honour vs dishonour and stuff like that, that grates a bit. God Im a picky bastard though, i dont know why i cant just 'suspend disbelief' enjoy it and 'go with it, it clearly is epic with all the medieval scenery and stuff, there are some great characters too, mostly Ned Stark's kids tbh, and the mystic/prophets with their dreams and that girl from north of the wall who accompanies the 'little lord' who lost his legs, jamie lanniseter (and his butch female escort), the imp, those blue eyed zombie things north of the wall are amazing.

I dont mind the genre, but Game of thrones is complicated, scattered, gets confusing. tis beautifully filmed though

Did you like lord of the rings?

Ah forgot Sherlock, the ex got me watching that and I loved it. Which reminds me of another I almost forgot to mention that she also introduced me to: That 70's Show, bit of an old one but great nonetheless :D

I've actually got all of The Sopranos downloaded somewhere or another, not sure which hard disk they're on but I'll have to take a look, I think I only ever watched the first episode but then some other series got my attention way more and I forgot about it until now.

As for the Game of Thrones plot, I think I just try to pay attention to each plot-line separately until they arch together and interact somehow, that helped a lot with the more annoyingly confusing parts of Lost too. :p

That said though some of the motives behind peoples actions in GoT have bugged me lately in the series but I never read the books so I guess in the original story the actions might have been explained a little better, or maybe I simply didn't have a full picture of the characters in question in mind before judging what they did. I'll have to see how it unfolds.

(don't click if you aren't up to date/don't want spoilers)
i.e. Tyrion genuinely seeming to fall for Shae and then acting like a complete twat and going off and murdering her. The heat of the moment can get people to do some dumb shit but usually it's more than walking into someone's room and 15 seconds later them being dead ;)

They'd have to pretty royally screw up for it to kill the enjoyment of the series for me though, although some parts have been hard to follow with all the simultaneous plots it's definitely one of the best shows I've watched to date.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong from when I watched it but I thought you see him moving through the castle after he kills her before he encounters his father? I thought he went looking for her wherever she was staying and then went for his father after, rather than finding her in his room, but I might need to give that a re-watch, was on benzos and my memory of it's a lil' fuzzy.

If you're right though then yeah I'd get that, though if not it seemed a tad harsh for how Tyrion's been portrayed until now. Might be over-analysing it though ;)

Yeah in his dads bed, hand of the king room i think, you'll see this pin

Ah, right you are, cheers. I noticed that but I thought it was Tyrion's since he was the hand of the king before, but then I remembered he obviously lost that position and did a double check and Google seems to agree.

Okay that clears things up for me - good because Tyrion's probably my favourite out of the whole lot (him and the guy Khaleesi friend-zoned hard and then ditched, just because I feel sorry for him :p), don't wanna see him go psycho for *no* reason just yet hah.

You saw the Hand of the King pin just as it was panning to the bed where Shae was.

Dan got there first, I was slow replying... :D

I'm probably going to read the books before the next series comes along.

Personally, I think a lot of people make the mistake of trying to figure out what is going on in some TV shows. I find it's better just to let the story unfold.

Just finished watching the first two episodes of True Detective, great recommendation from everyone who mentioned it here, it's got me hooked already and I can tell it's a new favourite coming up. :D

The show really evolves through the 8 episodes... if you have access to the 'Inside the Episode' extras, I'd watch the one for episode after you have seen it. Gives a great insight into things you might otherwise miss & adds some extra depth.

Enjoy. :)

To those of you who've watched True Detectives, I haven't got to the end yet so can't make assumptions but I'm watching the 5th episode and I noticed this has some parallels in the real world, I'll post them in spoiler tags so as not to spoil any of the plot for anyone who hasn't seen it:

NSFW:
Not sure if any of you have seen it but there's some videos on Youtube where one of the ex FBI directors comes out and states he was investigating the disappearance of children around the US that seemed to be related to some kind of satanic cult kidnapping raping and brainwashing them - he keeps on investigating and gets some names and apparently he gets shut down by superiors in the CIA and government, sounded like there were some people really high up involved in it. Pretty creepy stuff, wonder if the people developing the show got some of the ideas from that?

PS if something happens in the series that gives away whether or not it's based on reality or whatever then make a second spoiler with that in and a note not to open until the series is done plx :) don't want any spoilers, this is great and I should be done with the series by tonight :D

Didnt like it at all, nor any of the harry potter shite. I only liked LOTR when that 'darkside' wizard or w/e get involved, it was all far too "nicey nicey" and "quaint" for me8)

I've been working my way through American Horror Story... I love the way they have a recurring cast but with completely different characters & themes. I'd probably say the 2nd series was my favourite thus far because it was slightly darker & a bit more realstic. Having said that:

*Spoiler*

Nuns (one of which is possessed), criminally insane, a doctor who skins people alive, a Nazi scientist & aliens. I mean, c'mon... awesome combo

I wasn't awfully fond of Jessica Lange in the first season but she came into her own in the 2nd series & is awesome in the 3rd so far... almost halfway through.

I really think this sums it up: (talking of the 3rd season but...)

Rotten Tomatoes said:
creepy storytelling and campy, outrageous thrills

Fucking great... there was a Tarantino-esque scene in episode 5 of series 3. :D (you'll know the one if you've seen it!)

Seasons 1 & 2 are on Netflix for those that have it...
