What's Good on European and African TV v. Walking the Dead

A bit late now as it's gone off iplayer, but 'The men who made us spend' series on BBC2 about the history of marketing and its influence on our society. Ep 1 had loads on planned obsolesence (eg ipod's special screw so you couldn't taklethe battery out without a special screwdriver (and the bloke who made and sold his own screwdriver to get around it). Ep3 had loads on child marketing (starwars and he-man - took me back).

This was really interesting - it covered lots of ground i'd read/seen before, but it's rare to see this stuff on actual BBC (outside the odd adam curtis doc). This general subject is i think so important to understand how our society can be controlled the way it is - i don't think mind control is too strong a term (though it loses credibility)

(if you want to find out about this subject and can't find this series, try Psywar or human resources on metanoia films, or the lightbulb conspiracy (on planned obsolesence)

Yes - it was striking how some of the people he was interviewing just couldn't see the bad implications he was gently highlighting, being so caught up in their market ideology (which is the mainstream ideology among 'important' people after all).

Yeah i got into utopia again - last one next week. I liked the first episode how they stuck in loads of references to scandals from the 70s (like Aeiry Neve (or whatever it is))

(actually the real story of what was going on in the 70s is almost as interesting - the stuff came out in the 80s via Lobster magazine and colin wallace (as well as Spycatcher) - what's called 'the wilson plots' although it was so much wider than just harold wilson (it was basically a slow motion coup that attacked the left with subversion and eventually brought maggie thatcher to power) - this scandal should have been our watergate (it was far more serious), but it's a testament to the british establishment that they managed to pull through and cover it up. This was also directly linked to the kincora abuse scandal, so is current again now (colin wallace has been in the news) Read here for some details on the wilson plots (there was a bbc docudrama about it in the 90s but it didn't do it justice) (and the ken loach film hidden agenda touches on this stuff (in a fictional way) i think (i just found it and am about to watch it)

I watched those three episodes the other day.

I can't remember the guy's name but he was pretty good at giving some of the people a hard time. Catching them out with quotes from someone else at their company a few times.

Jaques Peretti. I meant to watch The Men Who Made Us Spend. The Men who Made Us Fat/Thin were also really good.

Watched the first two of The Men Who Made Us Spend but guess I left the last one a bit late. First two were really good though and will probably be on PooToob anyway by now. Have seen a couple things that fella's done before and like his approach. Lots of these type of things may make good arguments but rarely take those arguments and confront the people concerned about them. Was interesting to see the difference between ex/retired people he interviewed and those still in the game. Former were a bit slippery when it came down to admitting to outright shadiness but was refreshing to see how close to admission some came. Latter - especially those two US "doctors" who seem to be behind a lot of the anti-aging racket - being not only slippery but outright hostile and aggressive. Much like anybody else caught in a lie and confronted by truth really.

A Liar's Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman

BBC4 film of... what it says it is. Particularly nicely done in this case - all animated by several different animation studios so each section has a quite distinctive style to it. You don't have to be big on Monty Python to appreciate either I suspect (although probably helps all the same - and what are you doing not being big on Monty Python anyway you silly person) cos is more actual autobiography rather than Monty Python reminscences. Mostly involves lots of sex, drugs drinks and disillusionment... as well as some drugs, more sex and the odd bit of philosophical insight dotted about the place. Much better than I was expecting despite expecting I'd enjoy it. Mr Chapman himself plays (well voices) himself and they manged to get every surviving member of the Pythons to also play/voice themselves (and most of the other characters). Is also probably the only time you'll get to see Cameron Diaz playing Sigmund Freud and Terry Gilliam playing Alesteir Crowley. Is that type of autobiographical film.

Just watched the pilot for Black Jesus. Looks pretty promising so far. Good cameo from Craig's Dad From Friday (I have no clue what the guy's name is, he's just Craig's Dad). The bold Charlie Murphy is in it as well.

Anyone seen "Utopia"? half way through season 1 on netflix, seems really good

My mother seems to have recorded Utopia on the TV, might have a look tomorrow. Watching the new series of 24 at the moment as well but am not really progressing with it very quickly. Still need to start the recent Game of Thrones and continue with the current True Blood but I never seem to get round to it despite doing nothing else.

Is the 2nd series of Utopia as good as the first?

Yeah, id say even better, love the imagery and colours in some of the scenes. Season 2 is on 4od.

Currently watching

Our World War -
1. The First Day
Drama revealing real experiences of British soldiers in the First World War. In August 1914, the 4th Battalion The Royal Fusiliers reach the town of Mons in Belgium.

Onn BBC Iplayer

Watching a few of the new ones at the moment

The Strain - vampire but there not all gay (which makes a change)
The Leftovers - I think its about after the 'Rapture'
Dominion - finished the series and I enjoyed it but the other Mr Bear hated it

Tried to watch 'the last ship' - but its really bad

Waiting for The Mentalist to start, and also Bobs burgers, American Dad, Family Guy <3

Omg this, just reading this makes me excited. I love the Mentalist, the ending of series 6 <3

Wow, I think were the only ones who watch it (or admit to watching it anyway). Yeah series 6 was great, was strange losing that many strong characters (Rigsby - I would though, then Cho:o).

But it's brilliant!! Don't see why it isn't more popular. Series 6 was good in an unexpected way, I thought the big Red John ending would be the very end of the series but it was still good the way it went. Like you said, strange losing most of the main cast but I was still ok because I literally love Patrick Jane <3

Yeah he's great but bit of a tortured soul though - some of the things he does are pretty twisted.
