Hesher

it's been a few days since i've seen it. an ok movie, though hesher's character is the weakest. annoying at the beginning, little more bearable toward the end. the boy and natalie is the missed focused. where he gives her the ice cream cone and she just holds it in awe of the gesture, that scene is one of the better in a while. she plays the character well. that's what the movie should have been about. hesher is just there. almost like the embodiment of some abstract force. draws away from what's really good.

The Thin Red Line (1998 )



I haven't seen all that many war movies and I've never seen any of the older war movies. The only pre-1980 war movie I've seen is Apocalypse Now. Despite that I think this is the best war movie I've seen. It was the realistic savage brutality that was seen in the opening beach invasion of Saving Private Ryan but spread out into a full movie about a platoon(maybe not the right term) who tries to take over the strategic island of Guadalcanal in World War II.

Saving Private Ryan seems to overshadow this film as they both came out in 1998, both were nominated for Best Picture Oscar, both have all-star casts, and are both about WWII, though with very different story lines. While SPR takes place in Europe, this takes place in the West Pacific. Thin Red Line had some amazing acting and special effects, and was beautifully shot. It has a run time of about 2 hours 42 minutes (not including the credits), but it honestly went by very quick. I'm glad I finally sat down and watched it; really great film.


Oh, and if someone tells you that George Clooney is in Thin Red Line, (the movie cover prominently features his name) know that he has probably 60 seconds of screen time. He is in the movie very late into it and barely does anything at all. He has a short speech. This isn't giving any plot lines or story away, just don't expect to see much of him.

Word. I just saw that for the first time about a week ago. I mentioned it on the F&T Random Thoughts Thread. I was impressed by how realistic it was. Not as "shocking" as Requiem, but accurately portrays many of the difficulties of the lifestyle. Pacino & Winn were great in it too.

You have to check out The Deer Hunter, man. De Niro, Walken, Meryl Streep, John Savage. It's another fantastic Vietnam film, although it deals more so with the psychological effects of the war on the characters than the actual war itself .
 
Yes, I actually have seen that, just a few months ago too. I wasn't sure if that was considered a war movie or not. Also I was posting before work and didn't properly think back. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Did you ever see the Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode called Charlie Goes America All Over Everybody's Ass? They have a bar of total freedom and Frank ends up playing Russian Roulette in the basement with a bunch of Asian dudes. Pretty funny parody of Deer Hunter. That movie was intense. I heard something like 20 people got killed playing Russian Roulette after seeing that movie. Not sure how true it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

^Haha yeah, when Frank's gang get segregated to the basement. If 20 people died, I can only imagine how many people in total went home and played russian roulette. Statistically, I'd guess around 120 :P

After going on a run of watching low-thought, minimal-attention-needed, action flicks I've grown tired of simple movies and have been watching more serious movies for the time being. To continue with that trend after work last night I watched:

The Accused (1988 )



Jodie Foster plays her role excellently, a role for which she won the best actress Oscar. She's basically a low-income, low-educated, party girl who gets gang-raped in a bar with people cheering the rape on, and her attempt to seek justice. Pretty heavy storyline and there were some pretty brutal and sadistic scenes. Making it all the more worse is the true story that this is based on. Disturbing stuff. It's on Netflix Instant and is worth checking out.
 
^I have seen the accused for three or four times and yes I agree with you, the award for best actress was well deserved.

Last film I saw was about a week ago - Bad Country

It was an okay movie.. they could have done much better with the action scenes (felt like the timing was bad with the acting for shootouts etc.)

Mud

Another Matt Mcconaughey film. I thought this was pretty decent, I was told it was excellent so I gave it a go. I wish Mcconaughey would step out of his approach once in awhile, he seems to play the same smooth-talking guy with a southern accent in every film. I should give Buyers Club a shot soon, I heard he was great in it.
