Dallas Buyers Club

So I finally got around to DBC. I hadn't even seen a trailer for the film and had no idea what it was about until I watched it. I thought it was great, I was really impressed. Even with Mcconaughey, even though he was yet again a tough southerner with a stoner/surfer dude tone in his voice. I feel like I'm watching him play Wooderson from Dazed and Confused in every film. But DBC was excellent, it's recognition has been well deserved.

The Marine

starring John Cena

watched it last night because I could not find the remote (found it btw) and I actually enjoyed it in a low-expectation kind of way. The whole movie is just one action film cliche after another and you cant help but wonder if they actually expected anyone to take it seriously. Either way, I didnt, and basically just hyped it up a la Bevis and Butthead watching music videos (somewhat ripping on it, somewhat getting into it at the same time) which actually made me remember the plot.

There's also two hot chicks who hate each other throughout the movie and about a dozen explosions per hour so if that is your thing then by all means. Also, one of the most ridiculous car chases I've ever seen (not really in a good way though). And after that scene I was still in "this is fucking stupid and unreal" mode until I realized of course it's unreal, its a fucking movie. Enjoy it you faggot.

And at that moment John Cena jumped out of an exploding police car careening over a canyon into a river below and I just went "OHHHHHH SHIIIIIIITTTTT" and from there out it was actually a good time

see this movie on something, or just watch a WWF match with John Cena its about the same type of script just inside an arena

Ah yeah man i really wanna see that. Heard great things.

Tried to watch Anchorman 2 and turned it off after the scene where they meet the female black boss of the news station

I've never seen such a polarizing difference between two equally hyped and funded films of the same series (forget the direct to dvd sequels). The original was random of course, but in a way that seemed like it wasnt trying to be random. This movie just sucked and I didnt laugh once

felt like a direct-to-dvd movie

I didn't really like the first Anchorman. People made a big deal about it, but I just didn't care for it much. It had all the makings of a movie that I would find funny, but something about it just didn't work for me. Also didn't like where Baxter the dog got drop kicked off the bridge. I know it was fake and supposed to just be a ridiculous scene, but hurting dogs is a no-no. They make a joke about that in the movie Seven Psychopaths.

It doesn't seem to be rated as highly among other people as Anchorman, but on a similar note I also did not like Wedding Crashers. I did not think it was funny. Don't even really like it enough to put on as background TV if it happens to be playing.

it was definitely a Will Ferrell movie through and through, just filled with nonsensical and outrageous happenings one after the other. I just thought they picked a solid setting (1970's news networks) to parody because there probably were a lot of Ron Burgundys back then because the news was actually a big deal still. Now, with internet and like a million tv channels, nobody really gives a fuck who reads the news anymore.

The alley way news team fight in the first one was fucking hilarious
I haven't seen the second but hopefully they re-visited that some how

I watched Dallas Buyers club and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World the other night
Dbc was really fucking good, it was funny seeing Bradford Cox in it, he totally fits the aids look

Seeking a Friend... was ok too, favorite line was
Put on Radiohead, I wanna do heroin to Radiohead lol

The one with Chris Rock or the one with the Brits? The British one was pretty funny, didn't see the other

It's been a busy weekend for me.

Friday: World War Z. I enjoyed it, despite the fact that the characters were just too flat to get me invested in them. Overrated.

Saturday: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. A great film, one that they're (justly) calling the best one in the franchise thus far. Amazing writing, acting, and action, and keeps Captain America as the real soul of the Avengers. Highly recommended.

Sunday: Noah. This was the dark horse; I actually didn't want to see it, but my folks wanted to drag me along. After I shelved my skepticism, I found an incredibly photogenic, subtle, and well-made film that--like much of Aronofsky's work--sticks in your mind long after you leave the theater. For you atheists and agnostics out there, I can tell you that this is the most un-Biblical Bible film you're likely to see, which goes a long way towards explaining why a number of the Christians I know hate it.

The Master.

Well, great acting. I don't think Paul Thomas Anderson knew what he had in mind for the ending though. Seemed a bit abrupt and anticlimactic. Definitely not one of my favourites of his, but I'm doing Philip Seymour Hoffman the honour of watching most - if not all of his films - since his untimely departure.

I'm just so glad you left out any spoilers.

I didn't really care for The Master all that much, but between PSH and Joaquin Phoenix it was one of the finest acted movies I've ever seen. It still pops up in my head quite often.

"You're the bravest person I've ever met"

I loved the noises Hoffman made every time he downed one of Freddy's 'potions'. Hilarious.

Overall it was a bit disappointing, but that's mainly because we're (or at least I was) comparing it to his other films. Which were unmistakably hard to outdo. If anyone else had directed it, It would perhaps be held in higher regard.

I saw the master in Hollywood while I was practicing Scientology and I've done many of the touching walls and auditing things

Phoenix did a great job is give it a 8/10

Might see Noah tonight

The Last Picture Show

i'll have to watch this again at some point. i watched it in two sittings, which is close to having not seen the movie. i do not expect to find anything that grabs me second time 'round. it is an alright movie that thinks it hits harder than it does. the girl is pretty. does she die?

Millennium Mambo

two sittings as well. i sucked at watching movies last week. the actress in this one is even prettier. this movie is not good. it has minor continuity problems throughout. that's not why it's bad. it's trying to capture the aura of a stage both in all time and in one's life, and it succeeds. not well enough to carry the movie and it's going for more than just that atmosphere. it or i missed whatever the mark.

Malcolm X (1992)

Had been trying to watch this for a long time. Got it in the mail from Netflix a few months ago, but didn't get around to watching it. Glad I finally did. It was based on the book the Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. I don't often recommend books, but I recommend this book to anyone. It was not only an extremely interesting read, but it was a very influential book. It's been a few years since I read it, but the movie doesn't deviate much from the source material. I did think the movie would have been a little jumpy if you hadn't read the book already. Still very influential with a lot of important lessons.

I remember reading the book and whenever Malcolm X spoke I could picture Denzel Washington delivering those lines. He did an excellent job portraying him. I like most of the Denzel films I've seen, but this was definitely one of his best performances. Different characters, but he was just as good as he was as Alonso Harris in Training Day.

I definitely recommend the book and I'd also recommend the movie. Read the book first though.

Feeling the biopics lately. Going to watch JFK later.
