What's the score with Ukraine?

I wonder where/what femen are up to right now.

Guess I only ask because of the tits.

Ooft, I thought it had kind of calmed down as well, in a 'Putin's claimed Crimea and there's fuck all anyone can do about it so it's time to start working with it' kind of way.

The Guardian (which used to be my main news source) are still printing propaganda -"Crimea's referendum was a sham display of democracy" - Which, of course, it was but no mention of what lead up to it - A violent, US/EU sponsored coup of a democratically elected leader. Where was the democracy there? And in the dozens of other countries they've tried the same thing. (Yes, I'm aware that he was corrupt as all fuck but so? That makes it OK to sponsor a coup? No)

Can't say I'd argue with Putin here either - http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/18/crimea-putin-condemns-western-hypocrisy-annexation

Putin aired a list of foreign policy grievances going back to 2000, saying "we were cheated again and again, with decisions being taken behind our back", and insisted that it was ludicrous to claim the precedent of Kosovo – which was recognised by the west as an independent country following its secession from Serbia – as unique.

"How would our colleagues claim its uniqueness? It turns out because during the Kosovo conflict there were many human casualties. What, is that supposed to be a valid legal argument?" he asked.

The sanctions applied by the EU & US have been an absolute joke as well. They've barred like 20 cunts from travelling. Oh no. They must be regretting it all now and wishing they'd stayed clear of Ukraine, I'm sure...

They had a list of about 120 people to apply sanctions to. Whittled down to ~20. No doubt after a round of "Oh don't sanction him, he's my mate" "Don't sanction him, that'll hurt my business" etc.

I don't really know what "the west" hope to achieve now. There's absolutely no way Russia is going to back down here and the EU are hardly going to shout FUCK IT WORLD WAR 3 LETS GO!!!, are they?

Edit - John Kerry. Mileout as usual.

US secretary of state John Kerry, who is speaking at a town hall, says that Russia’s actions are “as egregious as any step I can think of taken by a country in today’s world” and that President Putin’s speech today was an attempt to “rewrite history” and that it “doesn’t jive with reality” and “only further put him on the wrong side of history”.

What he should have done is sneakily overthrow the government and install a puppet, eh Kerry? The US are so fucking shameless it's ridiculous. Do they think people aren't aware of the shit they do?

I do realise that some of my posts come across as BOO America YAY Russia lol, but I should point out I'm no fan of the way Russia treat their citizens etc, just that I'm even less a fan of the utter hypocrisy from everyone else.

Always been a little suspicious of Ukraine since they teamed up with the Nazis in WW2 and the jews always remarked that the Ukrainan guards were even more cruel than the jerries.

When Putin says they're fascists who took over in Kiev I'm quite inclined to believe him.

There's definitely some (at least a few) actual proper self-declared fascists in the new government' in Kiev, and they praise the nazi links - though the majority do not like that stuff (do they ever anywhere?) - the ukrainian fascists who helped the nazis tried doing uprisings after the war but no one was into it so they buggered off (or just worked for the cia or moscow or something).

i seem to remember reading about the ukraine being quite good in the early part of the USSR, following a more anarchist path under Makhno - Lenin soon turned on them and crushed them (like all the anarchists) because he wanted a stronger state.

I think he's playing the western media at their own game, what with him having been labeled a 'fascist' both implicitly and explicitly countless times over the years.

There's no doubt that there is a highly visible fascist element to the current government, however, but to characterise it as a fascist power grab is to over-simplify things a little.

Nice move on Putin's part though. :)

Gets easier and easier to see the new ukraine government as at least fascist-friendly with this - fascist mps forcing a Ukrainian tv boss to resign with force (the leader of the attacking group was a member of the parliament commitee on free speech!; plus the attourney general of the government is a member of svoboda):

More honest assessment here:

Apparently Russia supplies large parts of Europe with gas, and as they are fairly dependant on these supplies to top up their own Putin knows he has a strong card to play, and that Europe will not get too tough on him incase he says "fuck you then, I'm turning the gas pipes off." Also damaging the Russian economy too much would affect the rest of Europe also. So the EU and the USA have been made to look as completely impotent as they are. Even if Russia is completely diplomatically isolated for a while Putin won't give a fiddler's fart.

It had occured to me that that may be the point - cause a new oil (or gas) crisis and make a killing from the fracking gas price hike, as well as a whole new load of cover for austerity and re-redistribution (i've read convincing stuff that said the original oil crisis was engineered by western oil companies and saudis for similar reasons). A 'new cold war' will also make a killing for the good old military-industrial complex too...

Maybe Putin's even in on it with the west (i wouldn't put it past any of the cunts)

This is true. Putin can turn the gas off with a phone call.

Fuck sake. Has anyone seen Filth? Just as I typed that I got an image in my head of William Hague with a belt round his neck shouting "TURN AFF MA GAS!!!!". Nearly gave me the boke.

Russia also has a lot of economic dealings with many EU countries, including Germany.

Is it just me that feels like the US' response is a joke? i mean Obama coming on air and saying that yeah russia occupied part of another country so what we re gonna do is... not let a couple of russians in our country?

I agree - i don't think america really wants russia to get all its oligarchs to get rid of their dollars; or that the city of london really wants to lose the money laundering business it gets from the russian mafia (or its other russian finance business) - hence the hot air. Even as pure hot air it can still be used as the excuse to ramp up military spending (on both sides) and launder more tax money into arms companies.
