Carlos Tineo, 24, of Brooklyn was at Manhattan Criminal Court for a scheduled appearance when he spilled nine envelopes, believed to be filled with heroin, when he emptied his pockets at the metal detector. He then got into a melee with the court officers when they tried to arrest him, cops say.
Cops say Carlos Tineo, 24, was carrying nine bags filled with what's believed to be heroin. "White Tiger" was stamped on the envelopes.
A man dropped nine bags of a substance believed to be heroin at a Manhattan courthouse Wednesday and then attacked the officer who tried to arrest him, cops said.
Carlos Tineo, 24, assaulted the 36-year-old female court officer in the lobby of the Manhattan Crimininal Court on Centre St. after setting off a metal detector and spilling glassine envelopes branded "White Tiger" as he emptied his coat pocket, cops and sources said.
A melee erupted as officers tried to restrain Tineo about 12:45 p.m. An NYPD officer who was nearby collared the violent drug suspect, who was charged with felony assault, assaulting an officer, obstruction of governmental administration and possession of a controlled substance.
New York State Court Officers Association president Dennis Quirk said courthouse visitors often carry dangerous items and drugs to court.
"It's the constant problem we have on the magnetometers, where people come to the building with drugs and all sorts of contraband," Quirk said.
Tineo, of Brooklyn, was apparently at the building for a scheduled appearance relating to a July 9 arrest.
He was charged with driving a 2003 Mercedes Benz with a suspended license after failing to signal at West End Ave. and W. 77th St. after midnight. The car allegedly reeked of pot and authorities said he admitted to toking up.
"That's my weed. I was smoking it," he said, according to the criminal complaint.
