bolded roles are just the ones i have seen and thought he was fucking brilliant in. But I am a bit biased, and because he got off to such a great start, virtually everything he appears in is automatically brilliant in my book just because he is in it it. To be fair to myself though, this is largely the case, even if i wasnt so biased. Fucking hell, imagine having a CV of previous roles like his, is pretty impressive IMO.

Probably gonna rewatch all of 24, too again before this new 24 guff gets cracking.

Used to love that 24. one of the first box set series i ever bought. think i bought band of brothers and sopranos after that

MDB: How damnably thorough of you - you're not his agent or publicist are you? :sus:

I've seen a few of those that I can recall: Existenz, 28 Days Later and Shallow Grave. Only remember him in 28 Days Later - that'd be where I recognise him from probably. Seems to be mostly ITV drama and I've not watched ITV since the late-90s and never did like their drama. Don't watch much BBC drama either come to think of it. He counts as a star in my book cos he's been in a Cronenberg film, despite the fact I can't actually remember him in it. I never have been very good at remembering actors.

I wish i was, it would be a fine job to have something more glamorous and star studded than the humdrum things i actually do do. ITV do rarely make exceptionally good TV dramas, Cracker for its time was truly groundbreaking, and the second coming was also unusually extremely good. Anything written by Jimmy McGovern seems to be a cut above the usual formulaic cliched moronic crap ITV generally produce.

Biology night on BBC4 last night it seems. A few goodies on...

Weird Nature - 1. Marvellous Motion - a repeat but worth a watch. One of those scripted nature programmes with lotsa swanky camerwork. Bit slight but interesting enough and does look very pretty.

Dissected - 1. The Incredible Human Hand - not much like Gunther's dissection shows, bit more info in and around the subject than just the basic dissection itself. The actual dissecting is a smallish part with the rest being pieces about the specific features they've just demonstrated. Fascinating stuff that made me feel really quite bad about all those needles I've stuck into such delicate areas.

Secrets of Bones - 1. Size Matters - another new series and about a rather specific subject. All you could ever wish to know about bones (unless you're planning to go into orthapedic surgery or summat). First episode wasn't overly exciting being mainly about size but will hopefully pick up as it goes into more interesting aspects.

Quite liking having blocks dedicated to a specific subject of an eve. Wonder if they're gonna be doing the same with other subjects?

you might very well think so, but i couldnt possibly comment.

The original was fucking class. I cant say too much without giving the whole thing away but it was one of the best series of the decade. Was there only 4 episodes :? I thought there was much more to it than that, i guess that speaks even more highly of it, if such a short series made such an impression.

Hehe. Can see now why that became such a catchphrase. Watched the first two episodes last night and really enjoyed 'em. Kinda dated on the surface (how 80s was the early 90s?!? 8o) but brilliantly written and I have no doubts that it's far more close to reality than it has any bizniz being. Was too young for it when it was originally shown and never gotten around to it. Always quite fancied it cos is such a classic spoken of in hushed and hallowed terms by so many, voted best series ever (or top five at least) in virtually every such list I've seen for years. As such, my contrary nature made me rather avoid it a bit. Glad I finally got around to it cos it's great so far and am not expecting a sudden nosedive over the second half.

And Francis Urquhart is just such a brilliant character =D

yes, sly old bugger isnt he, and dear Maddie, the ambitious reporter, is really quite a beauty too.

Some things date better than others, like for instance i tried watching "Mean Streets" a couple of months ago, but that had dated incredibly badly, the 'street jive dialogue' was very cringey and the fight scenes were hilariously hammy and pantomine like by todays standards. On the other hand I also watched Papillion recently, and allthough that was made in 1973, and is a tad dated, in parts, overall it still stands up as it has a certain "classic" status. I've not watched Cukoos Nest or The Shining or Cool Hand Luke or The Great Escape for several years. It would be interesting to see whether they are now unbearably dated, or whether their status as classics would over ride any dated visual effects and stuff.

Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro & Harvey Keitel tho ... pure bliss ... you know how they turn out ... it was the beginning.

I fucking LOVE that movie

im sorry but i found it very badly dated, that fight in the pool room was sheer pantomine. And De Niro as the no good street hoodlum wack job may have been something in its day. But the whole thing has been done so much better now, since The Wire for example etc.

Yeah they all went on to do much better stuff, i spose if you count that film as 'the beginning', then its not too bad. I think we expect and demand so much more realism from our films and TV these days.

I love gangster stuff but still havnt seen all of Means streets, gpnna have to check that out

Think the first gangster thing i saw was Goodfellas, absolutely love that film. American gangster isnt far off it either. casino then the sopranos, blow, donnie brasco

Both Goodfellas and Casino stand the test of time both visually and content-wise. Without a doubt.

You're best off comparing Mean Streets to Taxi Driver in terms of production values and script, if that's the 'problem' with the movie. It needs to be put into perspective to be appreciated imo.

Both not far apart time wise, and both a mile away in terms of production to Goodfellas/Casino.

Mean Streets definitely does appear dated, but it's great for other reasons ... Scorsese always picked the right guys to do the job from the very start, and for me it's a pleasure to see those three together at that time, right at the beginning ... there's a feeling of 'this is fucking awesome film-making', underpinning it ... and just how fucking talented they all were from the off

I guess you are a film purist Marmalade. Ive seen Taxi Driver about 8 times, but it must be about 15 years since i last watched it. I liked that film very much, was one of my favourites. Its just that for me Mean Streets may have been something new and groundbreaking at the time, but it all seems very very old now.

Anyone watching True Detective yet?

If not, get on it fast. PHENOMENAL acting and perfect retro style/ feel to it. Sublimely awesome new tv show.

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey both lead ... and it's character driven as well as plot. It's philosophical too, and McConaughey's character is complex and deep and he's perfect for it.
