Record $18m haul of ecstasy-like chemical found hidden at Sans Souci in Sydney's south
Posted 15 minutes ago

Police in Sydney say they have seized a record quantity of a chemical used to make a drug similar to ecstasy.

Investigators say the 120 litres of PMMA oil seized could have made 480,000 pills, with an estimated street value of $18 million.

PMMA is a closely related chemical to MDMA, the main ingredient in ecstasy, and is often sold to unsuspecting users as ecstasy.

Police say it is the largest ever seizure of the chemical in Australia.

The substance was discovered on Tuesday when officers raided what they have described as a hidden drug laboratory at Sans Souci in Sydney's south.

Detectives from Strike Force Merry first raided the house last Thursday, when they allegedly found drug paraphernalia and 1.5 kilograms of methylamphetamine.

The house had been identified as part of an investigation into the supply of drugs in the Coffs Harbour area and several properties in the state's north were also raided last week.

Officers then returned to the Sans Souci home this week, when they discovered a recently constructed wall in the garage that was allegedly concealing two drug manufacturing set-ups.

As well as the PMMA oil, police say they also found other chemicals and equipment used for making drugs in the hidden section of the garage.

A 60-year-old man who lives at the home was charged after the initial raid and charged with large-scale drug supply and manufacturing offences.

More charges are expected to be laid over the chemicals and other items discovered this week.

Detective Superintendent Nick Bingham says PMMA is a dangerous chemical.

"Some drug manufacturers cook and then press PMMA into a tablet form, before selling it to unsuspecting drug users as ecstasy," he said.

"While PMMA does elicit similar effects to ecstasy, it takes a longer time to do so.

"As a result, there is a very real risk of users overdosing on the drug. We've seen cases where people take one tablet and, because they don't get a hit as quickly as they normally would, they assume it is weak ecstasy and ingest a second tablet.

"Eventually, they start to feel the effects of a double dose of PMMA and find themselves in all sorts of trouble."

Well that's good. HEre's the pic from the article -

Police say pills made with PMMA are commonly sold as ecstasy, adding to the danger for users.

Some people wonder why do people make pills with PMA in them, well when there is this sort of stuff and nothing else to press I doubt money hungry pressers really give a shit if people die or not as long as pill heads buy them, then when the word gets around they just swap logos and colours etc and keep on going, scum.

I guess this oil was imported? And not actually made here? But I'm not sure, as I heard it's not really that hard to make unfortunately.

PMMA "oil"? Or anethole? 'Cause I can't imagine people would be holding onto gallons of freebase amphetamines for any longer than they had to...

Anethole is a product of turpentine, among other things, and it's cheap as fuck... so not really a suprise he had 120 L.

^ Who knows what they hell they mean, as you can see it says - PMMA oil, but yeah none of us will know shit about it.

here's the release from the police here, which seems nearly exact of what the abc says, so I guess they got it from there -

JOINT MEDIA RELEASE: Record amount of ecstasy-like substance located in hidden clan lab in Sans Souci - Operation Polaris

Thursday, 13 February 2014 12:42:04 PM

Police have seized the largest amount of PMMA oil (used to produce an ecstasy-like tablet) ever located in Australia, following an operation in Sydney’s southern suburbs.

The oil, which had the potential to create 480,000 pills with an approximate street value of $18 million, was located in a hidden clandestine laboratory in Sans Souci on Tuesday (11 February 2014).

Last Thursday (6 February 2014), detectives attached to Strike Force Merry – which was formed to investigate the supply of illicit drugs in the Coffs Harbour area – executed search warrants at a number of properties in the state’s north, as well as at a home on Endeavour Street in Sans Souci.

As a result of the warrants, police seized 1.5kg of methylamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and cash.

The search warrant in Sans Souci led to the discovery of a clandestine laboratory inside the property, and a 60-year-old male resident of the home was subsequently charged with offences relating to large commercial drug supply and manufacture.

Early on Tuesday (11 February 2014), investigators from Operation Polaris executed a second search warrant at the home in Endeavour Street.

Behind a newly constructed wall inside the property’s garage, police discovered two additional, hidden clandestine laboratories.

Inside one of the laboratories, police located at least 120 litres of PMMA oil, as well as other chemicals and equipment used to manufacture illegal drugs.

The Commander of Operation Polaris, Detective Superintendent Nick Bingham, said PMMA was a dangerous chemical often used to produce a tablet which is sold under the guise of ecstasy.

“Some drug manufacturers cook and then press PMMA into a tablet form, before selling it to unsuspecting drug users as ecstasy,” Detective Superintendent Bingham said.

“While PMMA does elicit similar effects to ecstasy, it takes a longer time to do so.

“As a result, there is a very real risk of users overdosing on the drug.

“We’ve seen cases where people take one tablet and because they don’t get a hit as quickly as they normally would, they assume it is weak ecstasy and ingest a second tablet.

“Eventually, they start to feel the effects of a double dose of PMMA and find themselves in all sorts of trouble.”

Detective Superintendent Bingham noted that the 120 litres of PMMA seized in Sans Souci represented the largest single amount of the chemical ever located in Australia.

“This batch had the potential to produce 480,000 tablets,” Detective Superintendent Bingham said.

“We are immensely pleased that we’ve been able to locate this stockpile of PMMA and prevent it from being converted into pill form for sale to unsuspecting users.”

Detectives from Operation Polaris and specialist officers from the Drug Squad’s Chemical Operations team remain at the property in Sans Souci.

Charges are expected to be laid in relation to the two hidden labs and the chemicals seized.

Operation Polaris is a joint waterfront operation comprising the NSW Police Force, Australian Federal Police, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Australian Crime Commission and the NSW Crime Commission. It is a whole-of-government response targeting serious and organised criminal activity at New South Wales sea cargo terminals.

I want to know what kind of nefarious creature was synthesizing that. Are there pictures? I imagine him having at least one horn growing out of his frontal bone.

It sounds like they raided him, then others, then found a newly built wall with the apparent PMMA oil. Maybe the raid knocked his profits out of whack, so he decided to make some cheap shit in order to get the cash flowing again. I know nothing of chemistry, or tablets at all so this is wild speculation.

Thought the main use of PMMA oil was for use in amphetamine production? Still though, guess well never know.

-oh it shows the pills containing PMMA, fuck nasty bastards! Then these guys do need a long time inside,

Quote continued: "which is why we should look at legalizing these substances, so at the very least users know what they are taking and can stay safe, as well as take this lucrative market away from criminal elements in society." "but then we may have to do real police work and also have our funding model restructured, so nah, let's keep it illegal so we are all happy, bar the nasty druggies."

There are still underhand characters running legitimate pharmacuetical companies, so even if drugs were entirely legal, there would still be scope for criminal activity, diluted or inactive products, poisonous additives etc etc etc

If the precursor to PMMA is much cheaper & eaiser to source than safrole, then I can see why chemists would produce PMMA rather than MDMA, though of course, I really wish they wouldn't.

Good find on the police here i have no sympathy for people sell in pmma for a quick buck.

This is a known deadly substance especially when passed off as mdma in pressed pills.

Could it be the ketone?

Thank you.

DO you guys care to give an explanation of what you're talking about? It's all good and well to nod sagely at esoteric knowledge but there'd be more than a few of us here who have NFI what you're on about.

lol, yeah over my head, but -

Precursor to illicit drugs[edit]
Anethole is an inexpensive chemical precursor for paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA),[26] and is used in its clandestine manufacture.[27] Anethole is present in the essential oil from guarana, which is alleged to have a psychoactive effect. The absence of PMA or any other known psychoactive derivative of anethole leads to the conclusion that any purported psychoactive effect of guarana is not due to anethole.[28] Anethole is also present in absinthe, a liquor with a reputation for psychoactive effects; these effects however are attributed to ethanol.[29] (See also thujone, anethole dithione (ADT), and anethole trithione (ATT)).

Basically, freebase substituted phenethylamines tend to be caustic oils that are difficult to handle (the nbome series is an exception, as the larger molecule lends them greater solidity), so finding a large quantity in storage would be extremely unlikely. Anethole is the key precursory for production of PMA and PMMA, and an oil at room-temperature, so this was more likely what was seized; the article was misleading.
