^Nice! Like Hunger Games too I know some people are saying that the movie/books is based from Battle Royale but whatever I enjoy it.

I watched "The Counselor" last night about a lawyer who got involved with drug trafficking. It was an ok movie but the most memorable is Cameron Diaz's tattoo I think they're wicked! That and her Cheetahs

I watched Lone Survivor again last night... that movie was just plain amazing. Really really good.

Anybody else see that? Just so violent, brutal, and raw. Had a great score too done by Explosions In The Sky, the same band who did the music for Friday Night Lights.

^^

Haha. Well the title was pretty indicative of what was going to happen. "Lone Survivor". But I know what you mean. It got to the point where even though I knew what was going to happen, I was like.. how the hell is this guy going to make it out of this?

If it wasn't for EiTS doing the score, I probably would have never seen Lone Survivor in theaters. Thanks for the heads up.

I wasn't crazy about Marky Mark having the lead. Feels like the movie would have benefited from not having any major actors for the lead roles. Saving Private Ryan is still the best war movie I've ever seen. Although I admit, there were parts of the film (especially towards the end) that brought me close to shedding a tear, being a real human being n' such. I agree with Bardo5 on the whole propaganda, "muh freedomz" thing.

^^

Yeah Saving Private Ryan was a classic. Best war movie, IMO.

I know what you mean too about the bigger actors being in Lone Survivor. Although, I think Wahlberg was actually pretty good. Taylor Kitsch as Mike Murphy was great too. His scene where he runs to make the call, was pretty epic, the great song in the background.

Here is a link to the EiTS song for that scene. It's really epic. Murphy's Ridge.

While I thought "Saving Private Ryan" was a great war film, I personally hold "Come and See" in the highest esteem within the genre. The 14 year old lead was reportedly hypnotized into believing some of the scenes were real, and to devastating effect. I've heard it described as something like the film David Lynch may have made had he grown up in Russia witnessing the atrocities of the Nazis. It certainly contains moments of arresting dark beauty and surreality.

Alps

by the same director and writers as Dogtooth. more commentary on the intersection of life and media. it doesn't go for the same pulp presentation. it does try to create confusion and an awkwardness. there are a bunch of movies that end on the closeup of a character's face. right as it changes. slightly but significantly. The Graduate. this might be one of those movies. only it's so subtle i'm not even sure it happened. that whole coaching thing doesn't make a lot of sense. don't think it's just noise, though this movie is certainly post-modern. maybe an elaborate "substitution." whatever the end is, it's a high point in an beautifully uncomfortable film.

Joe, you seen this yet? the search says you haven't; i'm growing not to trust that thing.

oh, reminded me of Holy Motors. in feel and theme. Alps is quieter.

I'm going to have to check this one out. I like how its wiki page measures the success of the film in the number of admissions rather than the number of dollars it took in :)

^I caught Come and See last night. I enjoyed it, I liked the surrealism. Although it didn't strike a solid chord with me in general really. Saving Private Ryan had a much more substantial impact on me as I walked away from it.

Perhaps I'll have to see both "Saving Private Ryan" and "Come and See" again. I saw the former just the one time back in 1998 when it came out and I was a teenager at the time, and the later I saw as a freshman in college. My capacity for critiquing films may very well have shifted since then.

permanent midnight..the first unfunny ben stiller film i have ever seen...tbh when i first saw he was the main character i was a bit put off by it but i love to watch films about heroin so gave it a go and i have to say it was a pretty good film..

Saw Philomena and didn't like it. Stephen Frears has never let me down, he's a solid film maker. But here? Mmhh...
