COLUMBUS, Ga. - Officials are still investigating the cause of a house fire that broke out on 42nd St. near Oates Ave. in Columbus, Ga. Thursday afternoon, but residents are blaming a newly installed water heater.

Six adults and two young children were inside watching television when the room began filling with smoke. After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, a man who walks with a cane went back in the burning house to retrieve something he left behind.

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," said Walter Serpit, "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me."

Serpit managed to save several cans of beer and he escaped the home without getting burned.

The Red Cross arrived shortly after firefighters extinguished the flames and they are helping the family get back on their feet. One Red Cross volunteer at the scene said they were able to respond quickly because a neighbor alerted them to the situation.

^ Compared to some alcoholics I know, shit what if were nat.ice or skol vodka? Either way a cringeworthy save cos you need it.

most alcoholics i know drink steel reserve

Or Mr.Bostons vodka... that shits like 9.99 for the BIG BOTTLE lol, we used to get it when we were in Highschool cuz it was so cheap.. Now days i cringe at the thought of such nastynest but hey we were young and didn't know any better

Okay, so this has probably progressed into a cliché around here by now, but I'll mention it nonetheless:

It really bothers me that this alcoholic got off so lightly in relation to comments made by readers of the article. If the man would have run back inside to grab his stash of weed/MDMA/heroin/etc. you can imagine how differently this might have played out in the end.

For the record, I don't have anything against the drunken master going to save his prized lager. Other than the fact that he could have burnt himself to a crisp, which would probably have come across as something rather selfish to do when you have a family to live for. But I also know first-hand all too well what addiction can do to someone's reasoning process, so I can totally sympathize with the man.

Bud light, isnt that like Americas favourite flavoured water? and he calls himself and alcoholic.. pshhhtttttt I am sure his insurance would of claimed for the 10+bottles of spirits he claimed he left in there if he had any sense.

I never heard of an alcoholic who counts his calories... until now?

Bud light is so bad! In fact, most of the beer you'll find in US stores is PISS! PISS! There's so much excellent beer brewed in the US, but stores are enamored of garbage like Coors or MGD.

Some of our regional beers will blow away even the pricey imports like Corona or Heineken. This was my favorite in New York:

Yea budlight is swill. Luckily there are places around that only carry microbrews and beers made in md. There are a few that get national recognition too. Im not a drinker at all, but its good to know if i want good beer there is a dive bar not far that has like 20 microbrews on tap, great specials and tons of imports, lots of good belgian ales too. We also have some great local wines.
