Is marijuana bad for the heart?

I stopped tobacco a few years ago and have seen a definite improvement. But when I get really high, I occasionally experience chest pains. Is that merely a psychological issue brought on by anxious thinking? Or is the increased heart-rate a bit too strenuous on the old ticker?

I remember when I first started smoking weed, and to me the ultimate experience was lying on my back, eyes closed with music playing, and getting that roller-coaster ride sensation...heart beating like crazy would only create more waves of pleasure. Now, I can't enjoy that. Even lying on my side is sometimes a bit much. Maybe I have a crap heart due to genetics and lifestyle, but I don't experience this when I'm sober.

If it were just an increased heart rate I would chalk it up to anxiety (though anxiety and stress can lead to chest pain, it's more often chest discomfort).

The chest pain has me wanting to say, first of all, you might want to see a doctor. That's just to cover my bases, though, as the heart's not exactly an organ you want to take uneducated opinions regarding. Have you ever had a high-blood pressure issue? I have a hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), high blood pressure and generalized anxiety disorder. When I'm stressing, my chest hurts like a bitch. Doctor's told me that can happen when the blood pressure gets too high, and my blood pressure apparently skyrockets when my anxiety kicks it into highgear and I'm in near-panic mode.

I don't think the psychoactives in cannabis is bad for the heart but the act of smoking certainly is.

Agreed, the harmful by-products of incinerating canabis will no doubt cause negative effects on the body, but as for affecting the heart with that set aside? I would have to agree that it is no more then the anxiety that may be a side affect. In other words, its all in your head at this point. I have not seen any reputable studys as of recent stating the negative effects of marijuana if not but for the fact that inhaling burnt material is bad for you. (So in essence, the plant itself and its chemicals are not harmful, the method of doseing might very well be, though)

Well, incidentally I tend to find this occurs more when I use edibles. So maybe, to speculate, it's down to anxiety. Although I should probably have a check-up to at least allay my fears. Thanks for the input.

If all else fails vaporize the Cannabis. But if it happens from Edibles then I can't be too sure. Good luck nonetheless.

its all that ketamine you did Godspeed.

as for cannabis, smoke less and then come back to it, deep breaths and make sure you've had some sugary sweets beforehand, some Orange juice if you want a milder experience.

the more deep breaths you take, your blood pressure will lower and stabilise and you will be able to relax and find it euphoric

Maybe it sounds like an obvious one but try stretching, particularly touching your toes and leaning backwards as far as you can with your feet rooted on the ground. Basically if you don't stretch very often (which a lot of people don't) your spine can spasm in a way that feels like you're having severe chest pains or even a heart attack. I think anxiety is what you're getting though, as someone else said Anxiety can actually cause heart discomfort. I know cannabis is a vasodilator but you may be getting vasoconstriction for some reason.

I had the same problem, but I sometimes felt pain not only when baked but sober too. Got to a doctor, turned out I had some kind of a little thing which name I do not know in english but it was because my spine kind of have put pressure on nerves around my chest. Started doing some stretching , gymnastics and shit and now I'm fine ;)

No cannabis is actully good for the heart and lungs and cleans tar out of your system
