Share your travel experiences and places you would like to travel to here.

I've been near this place, but never to this island, next time I am going here for loads of swimming and snorkelling for sure. I love peaceful places away from loads of people where you can just chill, and eat and drink and not be hassled by people trying to sell you shit or fuckwits judging you.

Anyone know it? (don't cheat and get info on the url lol)

So tell us your stories or dreams of OS places people.

^ wow, that place looks great. Wish I had a shack on it.

Major holiday for me would be fantastic, but with being too busy ALL the time, work, family.
I don't even get a chance to think about where I'd go.

I suppose somewhere in Europe first, then at the tail end of the adventure, straight to Polldrivers island.

fuck anywhere would be nice for a change. great pic pd. might be an idea to get there while it still lasts.

Food poisoning sucks and it could even be from brushing your teeth so if in doubt get sealed bottled water. I really want to spend a few months travelling around South America get to see more of the countries and culture. I'd like to spend a few weeks in Tahiti rather than a few days :)!

Travel advice: watch out for roadside stalls in some third world countries they often don't wash out the glasses and you could get TB (if not vaccinated try and get some immunization before you travel, also hep B vaccine). If you can get hydrogen peroxide 30%, iodine, dressings if backpacking or surfing. Hydrogen peroxide just bubbles like crazy on reef cuts! Also a first aid kit. In cities I always keep my wallet as close to my body as possible, internal jacket pocket etc so I can feel it and it's not as obvious I'm a tourist with a bag or bum bag. Always watch out for pick-pockets/bag snatchers especially in crowded markets, trains etc. Try not to carry your passport around with you keep it at a secure location such as a hotel safety deposit or some such. Never leave your bags unlocked especially at an airport. Most important have fun.

I'd love to spend some time in Europe, the US or Canada, but the length of the trip and the costs kind of hold me back, maybe one day I'll get to do one, or some of them.

The pic is aitutaki, just north of Rarotonga in the Cook islands. I've been to the cook islands and a heap of other pacific island kinds of places, but the furthest I've been is Hong Kong. I'd like to go further abroad one day.

You can do a wotif.com on aitutaki, it's not that expensive, there's a variety of accommodation from pretty cheap to very expensive. I think you fly from Syd usually to a stop over in NZ (well we did) then onto Rarotonga, then a quick flight to aitutaki. Beautiful area, lovely people, no stress, no dramas. Good to get away and detox from our fast and furious lifestyles over here, or a good place to get married too. I also went to a wedding on mana island in fiji which was really nice and beautiful -

We spent a week in Tahiti earlier this year and it was fucking awesome. I'm not a sit around the beach type person, I can go to the beach any time I want, but this was all expenses paid, overwater bungalows. I would be nothing short of a bitch to complain. Snorkelling with rays and sharks was by far the highlight. Next time I would love to so some sailing around the islands.

I also travelled to Colombia (via LA) a couple of months ago for work. It was intense but really enjoyable. It made me want to head back to South America, possibly to watch the All Blacks in Argentina.

Even LA was a blast. We hired a black muscle car and spent most of our nights driving around while outlaw country music and 80's hair metal blasted from our stereo.

I spent a month traveling through Indonesia and loved it. Couldn't stay in Bali for too long though. Diving with manta rays was awesome.

Also did a couple of month trip starting at the top of China, and working my way down. Same with India. Both places were absolutely amazing, and would do either again in a heartbeat.

Done a few domestic trips - loved Cairns.

If all goes according to plan, next year will be Europe for a couple of months.

I'd absolutely love to visit Israel and South America also. If I didn't have to go and see the peasant family in Europe, I'd be probably do either of these next year instead.

I want foreign, less populated, and clean, but cultural. So I'm not really sure where to go.

I would love to go to India if getting sick weren't a guarantee for me.

Actually some of the best meals I've eaten were at those roadside stalls in Thailand. But then Koh Phangan rocks :) Agree with pickpockets though. I wasn't a victim when living in Hong Kong but quite a few other exchange students I was with were targeted and had phones and wallets taken in the touristy night club district.

Besides Thailand and Hong Kong, I've been to mainland China (Beijing and Guilin) and that place was fantastic. I'd love to go back and travel there some more one day and see the scenery in a particular place the movie Avatar was based on. Can't remember the name of it though.

Places I've been worth noting:
1. ESTONIA!!! Definitely top of my list. Will go back again for sure.
2. Snow resorts outside Salt Lake City Utah - Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird. Beautiful places.
3. Few different places around Vanuatu, like Wala and Champaign Bay.

Places I want to go:
1. Back to Estonia lol, though more of Europe - namely Nederlands, Switzerland, and Germany to hit the Nurburgring :D
2. Thailand/any Asian country around there like Vietnam, S.Korea, etc
3. Canada, probably Calgary though ultimately for the snowfields/

I think you are over exaggerating the risks of food poisoning. I have spent over a year in third world countries and only had proper food poisoning twice (once of a pizza in Bolivia, and the other time was my fault as I left some dirty dishes out in the sun for a few days and then just washed them in tap water before eating off them in Thailand).

Anyway, I've spent about 5 months in South East Asia (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Singapore) and 7 months in the US and Latin America (Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina).

My favourite places were:
Thailand and Laos - amazing food and great people. I spent a few months teaching English there and loved it. Totally immersed myself in the culture. I love Laos too for similiar reasons but it is a bit more laid back.
Nicaragua - this one was a real surprise. It was a really beautiful country and it had hardly any tourists. Great jungles, cool cities and lots of volcanoes. The people were awesome too.
Colombia - beautiful women, cool people, great cities. The people of Colombia were the highlight for me, so warm and welcoming. In South America the people in general rock but Colombians were the best of a good bunch.
Peru - Ancient cultures, jungles, the andeas and deserts. Plus some of the best and most unique food in South America (plus the best coke).
Bolivia - only because of the time I spent in the salt flats and 5 days trekking and boating in the amazon.

Places I want to go:
A month long trip to India (and maybe Nepal) will probably be next in about a year.
I'd love to do a nice long trip up the east coast of Africa starting in South Africa and working my way up to Egypt and into the Middle East. That is a real pipe dream at the moment as it would coast like $15K+ and force me to quit my career - but hey we can all dream.

Love this thread - getting me all excited about travelling again.

Yeah some friends just came back from Hawaii and said they had an awesome time. There are some great stories already in this thread and some amazing places. I think I would just about visit any of the places suggested or mentioned so far, if I had the money to do so.

Everyone that has travelled anywhere overseas is lucky, I have some friends who haven't been fortunate to travel at all so far in their lives.

It's not to hard to save up to go a third world country for a month or so. Once you pay for the airfare you could easily get around somewhere in South America, India or South East Asia for a month for $1000 to $2000.

Cutting back on alcohol and drugs for instance could easily save that amount of money over a year.

I had to get a new passport last yr (or was it the yr before?) anyway I'm keen as to go OS again as soon as I can and get some stamps in this new passport, might be another yr or two, as I'm pumping as much money as I can to the remainder of my mortgage at present. But it will happen eventually.
