Some new inmates get introduced to their "sponsors", established prison residents. There's the cannibal, geekish yet thickset, who slowly licks the hand of his oddly unprotesting sponsor; the homeboy and fellow homeboy sponsor who exchange gang signs in plain view when introduced and don't move an inch towards each other, they are so cool; and the awkward, misfit lawyer who's sponsor is a nihilistic, street gang "Tony from
Taxi" doing life... the lawyer offers his hand for a formal shake but of course is painfully ignored - full screen camera shot just to make sure
YOU DON'T MISS IT.
Next day a preaching, rabble-rousing, radical Islamic leader arrives, who doesn't get a mentor (he's a
celebrity extremist, why should he need one?) He goes about with a permanent fanatical grin and air of invulnerability, laughingly mocks the prison governor with impunity and has a prefab troupe of bearded black followers dotting about the place in kufis, chanting in arabic whenever they see him, obeying his every command without question - one guy is smoking a fag nonchalantly but throws it away immediately when the group is told they must give up their worldly vices.
All a bit OTT and stereotyped
