Is MDMA as "harmless" as we wish to believe?

I raised this question after reading Futura's report about his attempted suicide and subsequent recovery, but I feel that maybe it deserves more general discussion;

OK many drug users and probably a lot of the general public seem to think that MDMA is a relatively safe drug, when used within limits. However, I have read a multitude of reports from people on here, and elsewhere about long, drawn out recovery periods from depression, brain-zaps, low energy and just general bad mental space. I know we all would love to think that our favourite chemical is safe to use, but really, are we kidding ourselves, or are these events due to adulterated pills or substances sold as what they are not, or just over use of MDMA?

Defendants of the drug will no doubt cry the latter, or that bad come down reports are written by lightweights, both of which may be true. I have no opinion, I suffer very little from come downs, but I still wonder whether the drug is as harmless as we would like to believe. Any thoughts?:?

MDMA in certain people can be very harmful. The percentage of people that fall into this category is very very small.

Bad side effects do happen. For the vast majority of users, when used sensibly, they will find that MDMA is a magnificent drug and the euphoric, empathic, loved up feelings outweighs the comedown.

you kind of contradict yourself. You say that we say MDMA is safe when used responsibly, then cite users who took untested product way too often for extended periods of time... the two don't match up.

honestly I think MDMA can be extremely harmful, or almost completely benign depending how you use it. Kind of like table salt lmao. Things aren't always black and white, MDMA is a very grey drug IMO

It punishes people who think that it is completely harmless, and it can be very harmful to those that are pre-disposed to certain medical health issues like depression and anxiety. With responsible use though it is nearly harmless.

This. I'd say that a large number of the very small category find their way to Internet forums.

Since the mid 1980's I have personally found it not to be harmful because I respect it.
Only a few times a year.
Proper dose.
Only tested...very pure product.
I don't treat it like candy.

Okay... this is from 15 years experience with MDMA and Methamphetamine. And observations of other drugs.
1) Pretty much everyone i know that has taken a lot of acid now have anxiety disorders ... talking 50+ trips over a few years, i know at least 5 people who are now DEBILITATED by anxiety who were massive acid heads
2) About half of the people who i partied with from 1997-2002, we took probably 400-500 pills over those times, are now on anti-depressents or have been on anti-depressents. I have been on psychiatric medication for 15 years now since those days. I have no doubt that heavy MDMA use causes mental illness in SOME people. (although I really took it to ane xtreme, was popping pills daily for several years)
3) Everyone that takes a lot of MDMA and/or Meth loses the magic of the experience after a year or two of heavy use. Its still fun but nowhere near what it was to start with.
4) Sleep deprevation, malnutrition, contaminents in pills, and a generally unhealthy lifestyle are as bad as the drugs themselves. Those that get sleep, eat well, test their drugs, and use in moderation are the ones who escape the negative effects of stimulants including MDMA

Did we really expect that you could have an experience like MDMA, which is so profound, and not have some sort of negative rebound?? What goes up must come down.

Why the fuck would any one "pop pills daily for several years".

Up until that comment I was quite liking some of your posts on this forum. When you say pills, are you saying you took MDMA every day for years. If so thats just fucking stupidity of the highest order.

^ this is a great point, but most people would class taking pills every day as an unhealthy lifestyle. Wouldn't matter how healthy everything else was if you were popping E's every day.

Hey Swedger77

Man - I agree with you!! Why would anyone pop pills daily? Without giving too much away on a public forum I had the access to virtualy unlimited pills. Some were MDMA but many were also meth based. I would even put a pill on my bedside table and wake up a pop it. My record was 22 pills in 24 hours. IT WAS STUPIDITY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER! I agree. Absolutely. And its worth adding I am exagerating for effect a little - generally id have 2 days off a week, or even some weeks with 4 days off, but also some weeks dropping every day. No prizes for guessing that the pills were VERY VERY average in strength!! But I could have as many as I wanted so I just went nuts on the things. When you take that much MDMA you totally lose the loved up aspect and it ends up just feeling like being on Meth. And now MDMA and Meth are NOTHING compared to what they used to be.

I ruined my family, i lost half a dozen jobs, I had infections in my toes and constant bronchitis, I racked up thousands of dollars in debt and had to be bailed out because my life was in danger from the dealers, i lost my friends, i FRIED the shit out of my brain, and i am now on psych meds which I will be on for the rest of my life.

So Swedger77 - I AGREE. :)

Its not harmless but It doesnt fuck you up if you dont use it too much...
I dont think anyone can tell you the long term effects..

The high is absolutely incredible and life changing and is the reason it's still around and really popular.
We've all felt like God himself then suddenly the drug stops working and you go like "dude.. wtf am I doing? dancing like a moron and loving everyone, blah what a load of bullshit" So it really works strongly on our emotions. Is that healthy? Probably not. Can you get some really valueable experiences and information out of the high? yes, indeed. So much that no matter what harm it might do, its like the dealer told me "this drug, its worth it" while I was rolling for the 1st time. And yes, it was worth it indeed. I'll probably never feel that good again tho haha

Anything if you take too much is harmful. Honey, french fries, even drinking water. Our nerve system has its self recovery ability, so taking any drug is a game of "hurt-and-recovery".

Agree with Exstazy. The level of euphoria the pill gave us cannot be described with words :)
I regret that I didn't stock pills few years ago, and now E is not available in my area. :(

Moderation is the golden key with MDMA...

It carries a risk even when used resposnibly, but you should be alright. It deffintly can cause harmful side effects if abused though, I certainly know about that as many others do.

Geez, the ecstasy forum is pretty much about people landing themselves in horrific comedowns that last for weeks... Do we need any more evidence of its potential for harm?

Guarantee not everyone posting horror stories knows what they are taking. Could be BK MDPV etc...

only 2/100,000 have deadly negative reactions to MDMA and when used correctly with a sitter there is almost a 0% chance of anything terrible happening, so yes MDMA is a safe drug however ' ecstasy ' is not.

This is why the NIH has a multi million dollar research program going on right now on MDMA

I think its relatively safe. I know many people who use MDMA and have never heard of someone having any sort of comedown if using less than 170mg, not redosing, and not using frequently. The reports of bad side effects are always with untested product, unknown dosage (or excessive dosage, ie: >~180mg), overusing, and/or redosing. It just isn't meant to be abused the way most people are "taught" to use it.

There's so much discussion from both sides of the fence on this.

And here I am just kicking it on the post line, a bit torn up between the two. :\

MD has done wonders and cursed me in so many different ways.

This is, in my opinion, a really thought out statement on the practicality of MDMA.

There are so many variables as well that Folley touches on like people who use far too often with mostly untested product.

At some point MDMA is and can be extremely dangerous. I have had easy comedowns that leave me feeling refreshed and I've had uncomfortable-in-your-own-skin comedowns after binges that leave me shattered and wrecked.

Your best bet to keep harm at a minimum is get a test-kit, keep uses infrequent, and be-informed. Having websites like bluelight, erowid, wiki, and some articles through Google Scholar on your favorites list isn't a bad idea either.

^ Then you're one of the people who really get it, IMO.

MDMA is not safe, and it's sure as hell not harmless... it's a drug, it will do what it's supposed to do. It's up to you to keep that in line.

Agreed. Back in my MDMA abusing days I used to kid myself that MDMA isn't as harmless and go oh if worst comes to worst il hop on an SSRI... sounds all fine and dandy when your peaking. But after experiencing the effects that come from abusing MDMA, over 3 months every weekend consistent, used antioxidants and didn't redose however amphetamine was used in conjunction quite a few times, the damage really showed and I was left with serious depression as the major side along with anxiety and DP/DR. Ofcourse, not everyone is going to react the same to MDMA... I know people who abuse the shit out of it and are fine but on the other hand I have spoken to many ex-users who upon asking them said they did suffer effects from MDMA abuse.

Just because your typical pill head (weekend user sort of thing) that you will see out every weekend appears to be fine, mind you they are under the influence, I dare you to spend time with them sober and ask them if they experience depression/anxiety... I put my money on it they will say yes

Don't get me wrong, I fucking LOVE MDMA, most epic high in the world but I haven't touched the stuff in 8 months and I still don't feel comfortable going back to it which if I did will be responsible use (no redosing, antioxidants and hopefully in a cool environment etc etc) and certainly wouldn't roll more than once within a 3 month period.

Best thing you can do is understand the risks and practise responsible use with MDMA, I can't stress that anymore and this is from personal experience.
