Just been told that in the US the price of stuff labeled doesn't include tax, so if you walk up to the cashier with something labeled 99p it will cost you more. Is this right or have I been had for a fool?

yeah its right, you have not been taken for a fool mate.

the sales tax varies from state to state

say if you buy a 99 cent burger from jack in the box in california, the person on the till will ring it up as $1.09 as they have 9% sales tax in most cities now

I think they round it off of course

Makes a mockery of the listed price, but sure as hell beats our system here with VAT of 20% as prices are generally cheaper in the US to begin with

California sales tax 9%
UK Vat 20%

Hmm no wonder the founders of the USA started their own country

The only thing the UK seems to excel in is shitty weather and taxes

Oh and Cricket :)

Ah well the lower tax makes it better. Would still get on my tits, but would prefer the 9% to the 7.5% as it's much easier to figure out the final price

It is a pain when you go to order something yeah.

Its 9% in most cities now, so if your ever in California and want to buy an $800 tv , Better to go to a city or district that has 8.5% tax and save some moolah

I was in the bay area last year as my dad lives there and its 9% , they are even talking about making it 12% now, shocking

If you go really far up north to Eureka by the oregon border its like 8% I think

edit

The following rates will be effective January 1, 2013:

Eureka: 8.25%
Los Angeles: 9.00%
Palm Springs: 9.00%
Palo Alto: 8.63%
Sacramento: 8.00%
San Diego: 8.00%
San Francisco: 8.75%

Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 Years...

"When exposing a crime is treated as committing a crime, you are ruled by criminals"

He Compromised the lives of many innocent people serving the glorious United States of America and all the freedoms and values the country was founded on as opposed to the socialist crap in europe

Should have sent him to the gas chamber IMHO

footage of US apache crews shooting up civilians spring to mind, fuck loads of unrecorded deaths of civilians, thousands of claims against soliders torturing and raping people that never got investigated,

He helped the terrorists. Dan are you saying that you want to help the Bin Ladinists blow up our churches? Fuck you Dan.

Locking him up for 35 years is the only way to protect American citizens from evil brown people.

Shooting him in the face is another way and 'probably' longer lasting than 35 years ? Mind you in 35 years the American citizens will need protecting from 'American citizens' more than brown people. (Is brown the new Black?)

Why did he release it with loads of other stuff though? I feel if he had just released that information, then he might not have gotten such a long sentence.

It's not really news to me that Iraqi troops were torturing and raping people. Or that civilians died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Or that US apache crews had killed civilians. We just simply didn't learn much, nothing has changed, and it's a shame he wasted his life for that. It was his life to waste though. 35 years for a decision you make when you are 22 is very harsh though, but I guess that's how America does things. Maybe someone should leak some documents that tell us prison sentences in America are unfair?

Its not news to you but its news to many others, hats off to him for a selfless act revealing that stuff, it opens peoples eyes to the fact goverments are full of shit, lots of people are niaeve to it. ive got respect for people like that. daniel ellsberg sticks in my mind

Do you really think it changed people's minds one way or another? I don't think he changed anyone's opinions. The anti-America brigade are just as anti-America as ever, while the i-dont-give-a-fuck brigade simply still don't give a fuck. Daniel Ellsberg's leak was much more direct, in that it didn't come with another 700,000 documents. And it had a much greater effect in ending the Vietnam war. I happen to think the Snowden leaks were more important, and done in a better way. It's just a shame they didn't leak anything that is illegal illegal.

Rather short-sighted. The world is full of people who are developing their views and will be as long as we breed.

I approve of Snowden's leak purely because it was fascinating.

Props to the guy. I hope he gets away with it, because that is the more interesting outcome :sus:

No. It's like Breaking News: America are arseholes.

yep the same America that printed out $1.1 Trillion and handed it to the ECB to keep Europe afloat , Saving thousands of people from starving in Spain and Greece

what a bunch of cunts eh?

And the less said about the Money that Europe STILL owes to the USA following the 2nd world war the better eh?
