I didn't even think about the Kings Moot. That was properly awful. Establishes Crows Eye's dominance of the Greyjoy's, etc. It was just painful. I remember turning the page to see a Damphair chapter and fighting the urge to skip it.
I thought he overdid it with Cersei's comeuppance.
Jaime's chapters somewhat saved the book for me.

I guess our saving grace is that a lot of the tedium can be cut from TV. I just wonder if there's enough meat left after the fact. We will see.

I know from a few posts up we are all excited for The Red Viper. His trial by combat proxy fight on Tyrion's behalf (sorta) w/ The Mountain is going to be phenomenal - and they recast the original actor who played the Mountain in Season 1. "You raped her. You murdered her. You killed her children." I'm already ashiver.

Tyrion killing Tywin I feel more dubious towards. The show to this point deviated a great deal from the book concerning the character of Shae. I don't think she is going to so cruelly betray Tyrion and be found naked in Tywin's chamber and subsequently strangled. This may take away from the moral ambiguity plaguing Tyrion afterward, maybe not. Some deviations have worked in this series, but this one doesn't look like it will. I am excited for the exchange between Tyrion and Jaime before Tyrion's escape: "She's been fucking Lancel and Osmund Kettleblack and probably Moon Boy for all I know."

The assault on the wall by Mance Rayder and the save by Stannis will be goood, but woulda been better for most viewers if they didn't know Stannis was gonna make the save. As a reader, it will have the same impact on me.

Cold Hands and Stone Heart will both be interesting to see.... if we get to see either.

And can I get some Strong Belwas? I am seriously upset we didn't get an authentic Vargo Hoat and no Strong Belwas either last season!

Oh, and I almost forgot, Sansa's displacement from prisoner in King's Landing to Prisoner of the Eyrie. One of the most enduring images of the book is when she builds that ice model of Winterfell. I am fairly sure that is in ASOS at least. And we begin to see the real players of the game next season w/ Baelish and Varys making their moves. Baelish's move ought to be decidedly entertaining and dizzying to watch as he send Lysa out the Moondoor.

you know...i think because they make shae's character so seemingly emotional...it will be a bigger shock when she betrays him on trial and then is found in tywin's bed. i mean, look what they did with talisa/jeyne...they spiced up that storyline quite a bit and stabbed a pregnant woman in the uterus as the first kill of the RW. i don't think they're going to shy away from shae's fate. D&D are sick individuals and like that kind of shit. they tried to make us care about talisa just to have her murdered in that brutally disgusting way which totally deviated..i don't see them making a deviation from the books and making it less interesting instead. and you know, there's not much suggesting in the books that shae never cared about tyrion, she could've just been saving her own skin as best as she could...i don't know.

and i don't know about coldhands, i think he's cut.

and i really loveddddd sansa at the eyrie, it was so interesting.i couldn't believe the shit petyr was doing.

Joffrey's death comes second for me following The Mountain vs Red Viper.

I have a really hard time imagining them asking Charles Dance to play out his death the way it occurred in the books. He's too fucking dignified to take a bolt in the pubes and shit himself. Fake or not.
I realize stealing Tywin's dignity/high regard for himself was part of the motivation for Tyrion. Just seems like a scene they'll rewrite and make more straight forward.

There's no Strong Belwas. He would have long ago shown and I'm almost sure I read that GRRM confirmed he was out. Seems the same for Cold Hands and Stone Heart. Michelle Fairley's contract is finished.

I agree regarding Stannis rescue of the NW. There was really no reason to foreshadow it and I feel it will take away some of the impact of the scene.

I really like Jon Snow in the books and he's obviously gonna have to start moving to the forefront of the story now. I'm not so sure about that actor. I know Jon's supposed to be somewhat dour, but it seems like that guy does nothing but dour. Hopefully he's just following how he's been told to play the character and will get appropriately Stark(and Targaryen?)-like when the time comes.

We need a more prominent and fleshed out Tormund also. He's relatively entertaining in the books but I would guess that any show watcher would be hard pressed to even come up with his name. He's just another guy.

Next season I have no doubt will be close to as epic as last season. It's the seasons that follow that concern me...... Wading through ADWD's muck will be interesting.

well, he said in an interview that once a fan came up to him and asked him how he felt about the way he dies, etc. and charles dance had no idea and was like WHAT NO WAY THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN, and read the books and now seems whatever about it. i don't think they're going to change him shitting himself. they wouldn't have included the line of shitting gold with robb in season 2 if so..they have to follow that through lol. the best line of storm was "tywin lannister did not in fact shit gold"
and like i said above, D&D love the shock and gross factor.

and what do you mean michelle fairely's contract is up? what about her running around with the brotherhood as a zombie?

honestly, there's not much point to developing the wildlings in the show IMO. i don't think they're going to...

I don't doubt they have the balls to match Tywin's book death. I just have a really hard time picturing it done to a T. Complete with loss of bowel control and all. I don't know. Haha.

I know you read in step with the show, more or less, so I won't reveal anything. I'll just say that I have a hard time seeing them writing around the significance of Tormund's character.

I read a couple different articles with Michelle Fairley following the Red Wedding episode. She made clear that the contract she signed with HBO to do the show only ran through this past season. So, even before reading the books she knew that her role on the show would meet some sort of end.
I don't know for certain that she wouldn't come back for some kind of cameo as Lady Stoneheart. I just doubt it.
There was time for them to show her being tossed into the twins. The fact that they didn't would indicate to me that they're gonna skip that character.

Yeah, season 4 is the second half of SOS's.

gotta have lady stoneheart after that dude. and why have the brotherhood at all, i'm pretty sure that's kind of the point of them...
all i know is no lady stoneheart is straight BS.

They clearly like Dondarrion and he hasn't officially died yet. He was extremely loyal to and admired Ned. He could continue to be the head of BWB's/seeker of revenge for TRW. Or Thoros. Something like this, they can improvise.

They do this kind of stuff when a actor has become unavailable/moved on. Michelle Fairley's not going to wont for work after her stint on GOT's. Plotting ahead as they do, can they really count on her being available to travel to wherever and play the role? As brief as it will be?

There's a protracted back and forth with the guy that originally played The Mountain. He was perfect. The problem was he had his spot at the tourney, cut the horse in half, etc, in season 1, but hasn't REALLY been needed until now for season 4. The guys gotta work, so he took a part in The Hobbit. Now, apparently, he wants back in.
They were pissed he took off, cause they wanted him briefly at Harrenhal in season 2. So, they had some other guy play him at some of Tywin's meetings there. That guy's completely wrong for the part. Now, it seems, they're trying to get the original guy back.

They knew they needed The Mountain for what's to come. They still didn't or couldn't secure that the original actor would/could return. Sounds much, much easier to just cut Lady Stoneheart's part. It's a really cartoony character anyway. They seem to like to cut those. IDK.

I was kinda bummed we had to trade Beric Dondarrion for Stoneheart in the book. The BWB seems to have lost its way after losing its leadership and falling under the aegis of Stoneheart. I don't see the point in keeping the BWB in the show if it is still headed by L Beric, but who knows....? I think stuff will play out w/ them down the line involving The Hound and Clem/Lem (dude who used to be a bannerman for the Stasrks). I don't think the Hound is dead, and I am saying this at 115 pages into ADWD
 
This is an interesting take on the Iron Throne by George R. R. Martin, both in the show and how he pictured it.

That throne is so, so much better.
It never made any sense when they threw the(paraphrased) "The throne is made from all the swords of his vanquished enemies" deal.
Then you look at the shows throne and there's what, maybe a couple hundred swords? Not a very large group of enemies...

The show formed my opinions first (only where the first book was concerned), so in many ways I have wrapped the images from the book around those from the show. Never realized the throne was supposed to be that large.


I always assumed that they only melted down the swords of the lords and captains of the armies, and not the swords of all the armies themselves, based on the assumption that the throne was as large as it was in the television show. In my mind it was way more warped and asymmetric than the TV version, but roughly the same size.

This is good to know.
 
Fan art is such a cool resource to have now. I always find it interesting to look at other people's minds eye images of a character or scene translated to paper/digital art.
Sometimes my mental pictures match. Sometimes they're way off and the images give me a entirely different perspective.
It's a great credit to the GOT's creators that so often their cast choices and sets match what is presented in the book so closely.
However... The other thing that never made sense about the shows throne is that Aerys was tormented, covered in scabs from where he'd been cut on the throne.
The seat and arm rests don't make sense in that they're so smooth. Picture's more better.
I'm gonna stop bitching about the throne now.
 
I didn't picture the throne quite so... large, with many integrated steps leading up to the seat.

After seeing what it's supposed to look like, it really changed the scene in my head where Jamie, after killing Aerys, decides to sit on the Iron Throne and wait to see who comes.

The image was darkly comical before. Now it seems there would be a slight, perhaps very slight, chance of hiding, running around the base long enough for someone to come to his rescue.
Certainly doubtful, but less ridiculous than running around/behind the shows throne.

I read on a fan forum we are going to get books on Robert's Rebellion. Does anyone know anything about this?

Here's a article from February where he says no because it would be redundant. He feels it's a part of Ice and Fire and should stay there.
I don't agree with him. Yeah, we'll have all the meat as far as most the details of the Rebellion by the time the ASOIAF series is over. But filling in the gaps, having the Tower of Joy or the Battle of the Trident written out in minute to minute detail would be awesome. As long as he did it following the completion of the 7 books.
Certainly anything could happen. Money is a powerful motivator. He just needs to not have a heart attack or anything of that sort.
