DUI checkpoint video goes viral (K9 false alert)

To be fair, it's a border checkpoint, which is a little bit different. No excuse for smashing glass into someone's face....but an entirely different situation than trying to catch people partyin in Tennessee

Oh okay, I've been through the one outside of El Paso before......everything down that way is fucking ramped up like crazy, just driving through there is like a fucking police state...Ya got town, state, county, homeland security, border patrol etc. That guy seemed like he was just refusing to do fucking everything though, and those are fixed checkpoints...They're not always all open, but they're there....I was surprised the first time I came across one because they were asking me all kinds of questions about being in Mexico and I wasn't even coming from there...

Anyhow, still a slightly different situation...

He would have already been home smoking a bowl if he had just wound down his window and answered a couple of questions. If you want to make a big deal of it you red flag yourself as a trouble maker. It is a "War on drugs" and you have to fight smart. Combat has come a long way since armies engaged each other over open ground and ran at each other. Save you constitutional right battles for when you really need it otherwise you give them enough intelligence to change the rules of engagement.

I feel that you totally missed the point here.
A hero stands up to the cops - he knows that he has no drugs in the car, and he knows his rights.
His purpose was clearly not to be home "smoking a bowl" as soon as possible.
It was to reveal the evil system for what it is, and show how cops have too much power.
If he had acquiesced to the cop's demands, this issue would be even less relevant / salient / noticeable that it is now.
Because of what this guy (and those in the other videos in this thread) did, there is a chance that things might be changed, and evil cops might get punished. That is good.
If everyone did what you are suggesting, and just tried to save their own skin, changes would occur even more slowly than they do now.

Damn protect and serve my left nut. I don't feel any safer.

On the other hand, they take filming and photographing those checkpoints as a big security risk, even though you can get all the info about them on a reasonable smart phone. Once again...anyone want a live in chef? I also clean...and give foot massages...

It makes sense because dogs are trained with toys. Hiding their toys and them finding it. They're looking for their toy.

I tried to reach out yesterday to the cop after seeing him allegedly leaving comments on YT. I thought it might humor some of you, so here it is...

My comment to the supposed cop in the video:

If this truly is the pig in the video, I'd like very much for you and all your fellow bullies to know that you douchebags deserve much of the animosity directed towards you. The shit you guys get away with is ridiculous. The lives you greedy assholes ruin to fill your arrest quotas is grotesque. And all the innocent people you kill due to "probable cause" and/or false information should put you all away for a very long time. Oh and good luck trying to get everyone to "cease and desist" ya dork.

His reply:

Listen, kid, don't go flying off the handle and comparin me to some of those bad cops that I know exist in the big cities. Why I heard that some of them take bribes, and consort with hookers right in their police cars. Here in Rutherford County we're all like family. And just like in a family, sometimes the boss got to get strict with his family members some time. You know. That's how I see it anyway. So I'm just gettin strict with that boy in this video, for his own good.

Apparently, not all cops are corrupt. Here's a compilation of border patrol agents giving up after their bluffs are called:

lol, so do you think it's actually him?

Samuel adams would be puking up and rolling in delicious beer in his grave if he saw what our country has become.

ΔΔΔthe boss!?! Last time I checked the police were there to protect and serve the American people not be subjugated by them. The police in small towns are the worst. The good old cops that don't face the same dangers a city cop faces. I think this may be a troll.

I'm just curious, will this work for me, a non American citizen on the roads there?

I wouldn't try it. The videographers are libertarian activists who know they have nothing to hide.

On the other hand, while a non-citizen, I was waved through a border crossing after lying about my citizenship. And I have a Hispanic accent.

This. Great post

This brings up the inevitable question about what to do in a situation where you don't want to grant police access to your car. Every time this subject comes up there's the usual back and forth between people who claim that you ought to stonewall the cops like this, which you have a legal right to do, or whether you should just comply with their orders and get it over with.

The world isn't perfect. In fact it is badly imperfect. I have to live within the boundaries of what is and isn't possible in this imperfect world, and while I respect this fellow, I cannot afford to try to martyr myself in a similar fashion. It is critical that we assert our rights as citizens, but I have a suspicion that the corruption and abuse of powers is entrenched within our police forces to the point where individual acts of bravery will not make a difference.

Does that mean we all need to just lie down and take it? No, but remember that the police have the entire judicial system backing them up. There are good judges just like there are good cops: I've met both. But generally the excesses perpetrated by police will be overlooked in the courts. So it's an important distinction to make that you're not just going to butt heads with the police, you're going to have the entire legal apparatus after you as well.

If you can afford to take that chance, then I heartily applaud you. But when I follow a cop's instructions, and in doing so get away with metaphorical murder, I am winning just as much as this fellow won. My goal may be different, that being escaping with a minimum of damage, but it's an intensely pleasurable thing to fool the police entirely to the point where a standoffish asshole is now joking around and being friendly.

That is how I defy them. Defiance takes many forms.

The only way standing up to cops is going to work is if everyone stands up all the time without exception. We have created a system that rewards cops for writing tickets. The cops look at busting people like they are doing society a favor, when in reality it is making the average citizens life harder in two ways.
1. The average citizen has to put up with more scrutiny as well as paying stiffer penalties for minor infractions.
2. The average citizen has to pay more in taxes to pay for a bloated legal system..ie more police wages, more court
search
costs, and more money to house inmates...etc etc etc.
Basically we are paying more to have our individual rights stepped on.

^It's true that if everyone asserted their rights and refused to do things that they weren't legally obligated to do, things would probably change....

given that constitutional rights extend to u.s. citizens, why is the question "are you a u.s. citizen?" considered an invasion? it's a bit of a paradox - i totally respect somebody who wants to stand up for their rights but what is to be gained by not simply confirming that one is a citizen.

i'm not saying they should consent to a search or answer any questions about their business, but why not confirm one is a u.s. citizen.
