wow this thread is full of fucking shit. Murs? seriously? get that backpack bullshit out of here. in the interest of not making redundant threads, i'm posting here.

trap music is what people who are from places outside of the south call 'rap music'. the rest of us know there are MANY different kinds of 'trap' that fall under the rap tent. some techno heads have their own opinion of what trap music is too, but i don't really care about that.

the most popular 'trap' rappers i can think of are most of the 1017 squad - Gucci Mane, Wacka Flocka Flame, other rappers like T.I., Future, Trinidad James, etc. the wiki article says trap came straight out of crunk and southern rap, which is 100% true. Trap is music about 'the game' and 'bitch power'. it's about dealing blow with a good enough beat to get your dick sucked to, and thus elements of dance, techno, trance and dubstep got mixed in. i think the best trap mix tape i've ever heard is by a French DJ called ƱZ.

no dance shit unless it's heavy and dark, you feel me? none of this PLUR techno neon bead bracelet bullshit.

there is good trap from outside the south of course - A$AP Rocky comes to mind. a New York rapper who has the good sense to pretend to be from Houston.

(stop watching this video at like the 5:00 mark unless you wanna see dumb skrillex do dumb shit to a perfectly decent Birdy Nam Nam track)

it's also got a distinctive aesthetic - a lot of the trappings (hahaha) of rap from ye olden days (90s). gold, everything. and not luxury rap filled with louis bags like Kanye, but a peacock like display of wealth and power in the simplest forms. men around the world wear gold teeth - as a physical show of wealth -- this is how i'm doing -- and incase they ever need it, no one can take that gold from them without a serious fight. gold is always worth something. that gucci bag, maybe not. this is true from mexico to haiti to russia and everywhere in between. not to be even more academic about this, but i feel like the rise of trap has a lot to do with the absolute decimation of wealth in black america. the housing crisis has wiped out over 60% of black america's total wealth. and that's a generous estimate. housing used to be the bedrock of wealth for black families, especially in shitty impoverished black southern america, and now that basically doesn't exist. coupled with the disasters that struck black america (katrina) are we surprised to see an explosion of music about gold, ice cream whips, running the streets? i'm not. a lot of these trap videos are made in third world countries. i mean absolute poverty. but i had to wait until i saw the "PORT OF SPAIN ST JAMES" in the trinidad james video before i was sure it wasn't new orleans.

when i saw someone say murs i knew the nerdy bl white kids with no idea about rap was in the house

is that like a default response? when someone talks about rap someone has to come in and say Murs! Non Prophets! Immortal Technique! blah blah. it's worse than just saying EMINEM in every rap thread

Fucking sage francis yo! Atmosphere! Thats "REAL" rap, dont you knowww??

People talk shit about the lyrics in some of the ghettoest trap music but then they go listen to shit with lyrics that just string together words with similar syllables in them and dont even make sense. People always used to give me shit way back in the day when i came on BL in rap threads and be like yo, you gotta check out these guys, theres some REALLY GRATE WHITE RAPPERS OUT THERE! and then just list everyone you said and I said. When i decided, OK, let me not be the typical lacey who just says "No i know I dont like it fuck that" Ill try and give a fair chance. I went on youtube and checked out some of these vids with lyrics and was just like...what the fuck. people really think shit like "labaratory lobotomy phlebotomy, comets, astronomy, i think theyre onto me, follow me silently violently nouns verbs, sounds words, universal explosion, the ocean find me floatin" is way better and deeper and talks about REAL SHIT YO than the shit we listen to. SMH. Anyways i see this turning into a little hate party and Im totally cool wit that haha

who the fuck is THAT??

Why have we decided that trap music is "non-electronic"? Has anyone ever before made trap music not reliant on synths and/or a sampler?

ebola

Trap is the new thing in EDM.
Love the blending as I grew up on hip hop and rap but transitioned into a full fledged EDM fien in my later years.
Mimosa's new album Future Trill good Hip-Hop with Trap influences lyrically and almost all trap infulences percussion and drop wise.
Axcellent is another good artist however I can pretty much only find him on youtube.
Flostradomus is another one.
I understand you wanted more true Hip Hop styled trap but in case anyone is feeing both emd and trap this is where it is at.

some dickhead decided to interview some white guy from Atlanta about trap (and not even HeroesxVillians or Ployd) but he did say something i agree with.

Dubstep is made for bros, it's target is white aggro bros who wanna hurt someone or themselves. Trap is made for women, it's sexy music for women.

yeahh boi.

Hahah...roughest 'gloss' of any cultural trend EVAR!
...
So I dunno. I just find it weird that the electronic/nonelectronic divide plays out via social groupings of listeners, not the degree of involvement of electronic generative techniques. It seems like a perhaps dubious distinction to make.

wow so much misinformation in this thread

Gucci Mane shot and killed a man during a home invasion (or was standing right there when his associate did it, depends on who you ask)

Young Jeezy got put on by the actual Big Meech and Black Mafia Family (before Rick Ross rode it to fame on a song that Styles P clearly was better on), you know, actual hardened criminals who had one of the biggest cocaine distribution systems in the continental United States?

so im not sure what some of these people are talking about

and what does "trap" even mean? a lot of these songs just seem like regular rap music to me

and what does "trap" even mean? a lot of these songs just seem like regular rap music to me

it's because you're not from/in a place that has a bazillion different kind of rap music to choose from. snap, bounce, crunk, chopped and screwed, trap, strip club rap, and that's just from the south. what about baltimore club rap? glitch? hyphy? molly rap? trap is about the struggle, the jihad. these guys aren't rapping about how good they've got it, they are rapping about how dangerous it is, how shitty bankhead life is, the struggle to get out and the fucked up things you gotta do to get out of the trap. the trap is a real place, or at least it was. you know, like Snow on the Bluff? The Bluff is probably the biggest trap I've ever seen. Or Bankhead, Adamsville, Thomasville, all those places. Clayton county, Ninth Ward/East New Orleans, Louisiana, 4th Ward Houston, North Houston etc. and of course, a lot of things overlap. UGK? trap music for sure. but also houston rap, chopped and screwed, etc. you feel me? i'm starting to sound like lacey. this is something that i could let take over my life if i let it - rap music.

ebola: it's a race thing. no kidding. "electronic" music is for white hipsters, who black rappers love to parrot and tease. "white girl wasted"? it's a real thing. travis porter talking about "those rockers"? it's a way for the black community to feel like that they have some sort of control of the co-opting of it. the 808 drums and snaps and shit i'm sure all the fucking same, but its not about the tech aspect of it. but then another thing is sometimes you just gotta hear it. you know trap when you hear it, for sure.
