Retirement

I'm too skittish to leave home but if I had to leave, I might consider Canada. Healthcare is reasonable from what I've heard. I had to take early retirement and my benefits are shite, and can't live on my measly stipend. Cambodia might be friendly budget-wise but you would be sweating your ass off. The thought of poisonous snakes give me the shivers considering you may be far from hospitals. Maybe I've seen too many scary documentaries but I would just stay home for a while.
 
Living outside the larger cities in Peru is incredibly cheap, you might do some research into that!

I believe there is an expatriate section on Reddit where people discuss this sort of thing, might look that up too :D

Best of luck mate, I'm for sure jealous, wish I could do something similar!

friend of mine did that, lives in central peru in the jungle drinking ayahuasca and living very frugally. loves it.
 
I considered the same move years ago and Cambodia was high on my list due to costs and easy access to drugs. If I were you I would look into getting a certification to teach English, even if you have enough money to survive right away, it would be good to have a fallback, just in case. Seriously ten grand isn't gonna last you more than a couple of years no matter how frugally you live, unless you really go live in the jungle and become self-sufficient.

How much money are you realistically going to get by subletting your flat in the UK? If it's a few hundred quid monthly then living in Cambodia should be no problem, I know a guy who managed to live for years in Greece by subletting a house in North London.

They are going for appx. £140 a week .
 
I was in Cambodia a few weeks ago and you could get a super nice flat for about $300 a month or so I was told, so I imagine you could get a mediocre one for cheaper. Cambodia is also good because of the lack of hassle for visas

It is cheap here. Not as cheap as four years ago though. Still, $12/13K should do fine for six months to a year.

India is even cheaper, mind you.

Super nice for $300? Nah. Super nice costs a few grand a month. An adaqute flat, unfurnished, is around 100/400 per month. I lease one of mine to a guy for $150 per month and live on the edge of the city in a small "villa" for $300 per month.

As a tourist, though I'd just stay in a guesthouse for $100/150 per month - makes more sense.
 
So if you actually do go to Cambodia can I come visit? I'm good at shooting so can procure wild boars from the forest, we can make opium tea and watch footie:)

Though Cambodia is hot, I'll give you that.

Y'know what? If money was no object I'd go see Canada too. But the most beautiful part of Canada, one of the most beautiful parts of the world, is horrendously expensive. Alberta. Oil rich. Only Albertans can afford to live there. Which is a shame because it looks like this.

Mate lives north of Brescia, half way up an Alp, its amazing. Not quite like that pic, but amazing.

I've been to the tip of southern Chile and that made us think that's what Alaska must be like....a bit. Really stunning. With the added bonus of not feeling threatened by rednecks, as I would be in Alaska. These people elected Sarah Palin don't forget...
