The EADD Windows Technical Gibberings Thread

Joining two computers together by USB does not make one act as storage for the other.

But by configuring file sharing you can achieve that effect. It is normally not that hard to set up, but to set it up securely and to fix it if goes wrong requires you to understand the principles of computer networking, and the specific networking technologies of your operating system(s).

I think Windows will allow fairly easy file sharing out the box, though. Google windows file sharing.

yeah, i want 2 machines and 1 monitor. Wouldnt a hdmi connection be quicker than remote desktop. Or if i can bbe assed reading up i could do a home network and have one mapped to the other as an external drive.

i start getiing confused when theres too many ways of doing one thing. The goal is to be able to access all my data as quickly as possible.

Two machines one monitor = a KVM switch, or Synergy. Remote desktop is OK if you're just doing word processing or other business-type things, not great for video content etc.

Synergy is pretty fucking great. Actually it expects two monitors by default :\ but if you have multiple inputs on your monitor (I do) you can just flick the switch on your monitor.

would the usb lead be the easiest way ?

It's possible to mount two hard drives in one computer. You can take the hard drive from one, put it inside the other and then you can access all the data from one machine.

Or get a new larger drive. Maybe an external drive. You could even take the hard drive from one and mount in an external USB drive enclosure.

The cheapest option is just to put both drives in one machine. But you need to know what you're doing with a screwdriver. And not to start pulling the wrong wires out etc.

Some machines make this job easier than others. Post make and model for a free consultation. I'm not going to bed for another 50 minutes.

Top marks for effort mate, i feel guilty wasting your time. I think it already has 2 HDDs, aklthough it could be one partioned 700 GB one. Its a packard bell N214. Please dont waster any more of your time I'll try a cable.

If it's a laptop then no, you can't put another drive in it and I've never seen a laptop with two drives in it. I don't think they exist.

Don't know what cable you're planning to use, but good luck. If it was me, I'd be getting an external USB enclosure and put one of the drives in it. You can do that with laptop drives too, just needs to be the right type of enclosure. Laptop drives are smaller, 2.5" usually, and it'll be either SATA or PATA, you need to know which when you pick an enclosure. They're normally fairly straightforward to remove from the laptop if you have small screwdrivers.

I've got enclosures here that I have no use for. If you want one, let me know.

Cheers Knock !! I think if theres ever a day i have spare mental energy I might try and be a total geek and try to make a home pc network. I could then watch any TV series, film, etc etc from bedromm or my living room. I do really have more pressing and important things to sort out before that though lol.

So they should get an amp and decent speakers.

can you still get bi wireable speakers? i think I need some. I might need a new amp. It does make a big difference. i remember the day I got my first separates, I forgot to buy speaker wire.

anyway, can someone tell me what the name of those cards that you used to stick into a laptop to make it wireless are called and where can I get one from. They can't be completely obsolete so soon?

thanks.

Does it need to be an actual card, as in a modem, or are you trying to get onto a wireless network? (In which case you'll need a usb wireless adaptor which is probably under a tenner on ebay).

You're looking for the acronym PCMCIA, or PC-CARD I think ;) They mean the same thing, PCMCIA did a "Prince" and became the peripheral standard formerly known as PCMCIA.

Does this mean you've not got USB on your laptop? cos if you do it doesn't make much sense to go hunting for ancient-style wifi adapters.

And if you don't.... can you even do basic internets on a pre USB laptop? And I mean a typical GUI style user experience not some bollocks text equivalent eg 'You are on bluelight dot ru. To the NORTH lies Ecstasy Discussion. To the EAST lies EADD. KNOCK is PODGERING a MYSTERIOUS SOLUTION.'
