^ no, because tv viewers don't have good memories or good attention spans. they have to keep checking in with everyone all the time or people will forget who they are.

season one followed book one to the letter. season two, not so much, and now season three has a bunch of storylines accelerating. theon is basically absent for two books, so they are pushing fast forward on him. and dany, for that matter.

eta: in reply to someone else.

i'm not overly concerned if he dies. you know he has obsessive assistants who have been note taking like insanely. and i'm sure he feels the pressure. plus hbo has the money to keep him alive, say, he has a heart attack or something.

No, what? They won't be patient? Some will, a few won't. I guess....
Characters do and will disappear for long lengths of time on the show. If a individuals attention span can't take it, then they need to find a new show.

The main character I was referring to that disappeared for 2000 or so pages, but was brought back immediately in the show is Theon. I was trying to be cryptic for the benefit of the show only folks.
It"s not fast forward. The things that are happening to Theon were happening when he was absent. They're just choosing to show it, rather than have him rehash much later on.

I recall hearing that Martin has agreed to finish the series within a fairly quick time line, perhaps by contract (I can't give a source for that though). I was also told the series is finished in elaborated outline form already, but obviously that's not what takes the most time to write. Still, the basics are down for others to work off of should he die.

I call BS on this. He might have a general idea of how things are going to go...but I think with this kind of series the ending is pretty much unwritten. I don't think there is an ending, really. His relationship with his publishers is such that he can pretty much release a book whenever he damn well pleases. Until its done, etc. This just pisses off his fans, who basically just have to wait.

NSFW:
If anything the most long term characters, Stannis and Dany can't be written off because their tales have been prophetic. Stannis is the hand of the lord of fire and has seen his future. Dany, because she has seen the throne in winter. I think Bran is sort of among them as well. Everyone else is pretty much dogmeat in terms of the white walkers. Winter will come and it will change the game entirely.

To be fair, Martin is taking a lot of fantasy archetypes and basically doing whatever he likes. He loves taking his epic characters and making them die, disappear, or just leaving them alone.

You know what the books say about prophecy, right?

"Prophecy is like a half-trained mule. It looks as though it might be useful, but the moment you trust in it, it kicks you in the head."

NSFW:
There's some very ambiguous prophecies in that book. Look at Stannis - which major prophecies does he meet? Azor Ahai? But Jon Snow looks like he meets them as well. (And even shows up in Missandre's visions when she's looking for glimpses of Azor Ahai.)

ASoI&F also shows some prophecies not turning out as expected - for example, Cersei marrying the "King" instead of the "Prince" - very true, but if you didn't know the future, you may have predicted that Rhaegar can't be written off because he'd have to stay around to become king.

Dany, I think, has some better prophecy-protection from death, at least until she gets her three mounts and three betrayals. Same with Cersei - her children needs three crowns and three shrouds. Assuming the prophecies aren't wrong.

I went to a doof in Syd uni back in the early 90's that was pretty cool. Quididity I think it was called.

fuck me that was great

oathbreaker. kingslayer.

i am so hot for you right now. i mean i will literally have sex with you this instant. the next person who tells me they hate jamie lannister is going to get punched in the fucking throat. fight me. everyone else thought it was a perfect episode too. where do i even start? the brutal fury in tyrion's voice about his previous marriage? jon snow and ygritte? i just wanted to kiss you there. arya stark and gendry? i can be your family! fucking danereys stormborn, mother of dragons, the breaker of chains, this one is keeping the name he had when daenerys freed him? basically the best episode of the season, thank you. fuck!

NSFW:
They really nailed the sense that Robb is screwed in this episode. Stannis and co. are just creepy. I was fearing his kid's face and then oh, thats not that bad!

i've only seen three eps of this season so far, and each has confirmed why it is the best show on television by far.

This was the best episode of the series. So far......
I was searching, hoping Patchface would be in that room with Shireen. That kind of sucks. Otherwise it was just about flawless. Fucking awesome.

Regrading prophecy.....
NSFW:
I feel like Jon has to be included in the list of "protected" characters.
There's the whole Azor Ahai thing. I feel like more than anything, the more you read, think about what his actual lineage probably is, the more apparent it becomes that he'll probably still be there at the end.

brienne and jamie had a great scene this week. my one problem -- she should have called him craven, like in the books. brienne has nothing but the highest respect for women - why would she use 'woman' as an insult? the answer is she wouldn't. great scene none the less.

ahh theon, meet ramsay snow, that bastard. i felt really bad for him when he was talking about his 'real' father, holy crap sad. but you fucking idiot, how do you not pick up on the context clue? winter is coming. the boltons are going to flay you alive. also concerned that reek has not shown. are we just avoiding that entirely? i mean, not like i desperately want to see a necrophiliac psychopath - maybe they just feel they it's not needed (yet?).

still with the podrick joke, eh? maybe we'll find out what really happened. doubt it, but i enjoy everyone's reaction to him & his time with the whores.

ahhh queen of thornes. "growing strong? most boring house words ever spoken. a golden rose and growing strong! no, WINTER IS COMING. we do not sow! direwolves and kraken, fearsome beasts! now go, my little buds, grow strong."

margary queen bitch holler back, don't think we didn't notice how the crowd screamed your name way more than your intended. and i saw the tears in your eyes, cersei. you've lost him you've lost him. i don't like what you're doing with sansa, either, miss tyrell. but we all know how that ends, don't we?

i've got a problem with the reed children and bran's storyline. i feel like it's confusing and not much is happening to help the viewer understand. i know what's happening, but not everyone's read them. they feel too vague and wishy washy. i wonder what we'll see with Robb and Jon next week, are those the only two we're missing? i think so.

I was annoyed by Theon's sad little monologue. The course that his life is taking makes it very clear that he regrets, and will always regret his decisions. I don't need a teary confession about how much he loved Ned. He may have, but he fucked the Stark's over. No tears....
Theon, meet Ramsay. Ramsay, Theon.

The Podrick thing is weird. It's fine and all. Kind of funny. But, why would Varys give a shit?
It's been stated that part of why he's so effective at doing what he does is because he isn't guided by his dick. That Bronn and Tyrion needed details made all the sense in the world.

Astapor was perfect. The Unsullied are better then what's been pictured in my head, Drogon.... So good.
I haven't been completely sold on Emilia Clarke as Daenerys until that scene. When she was calling on The Unsullied to fight for her, that was it for me. I'm happy.

I don't think we're getting a Reek. Probably too late, too confusing to the shows audience, at this point.

[Bran's storyline gets so odd. I kinda feel like they'll have to simplify the magic stuff.
i was talking to my boyfriend about this one. first i asked him some question's about words and terms in ASOIAF: craven, green, the others, etc. he didn't know what any of them were.
they don't use the word craven in the show. not enough to have it have the effect that it has in the books. if they used craven everyone would be like.."goddamit whose craven, another character whose name i don't know?" they went for the next best insult that they could think up of. i thought it was effective. it's throwing back at jaime what he and others like him have thrown at brienne all her life. it's ironic, and effective. if they threw craven in for the first time then, it would have been retarded.
i'm also very annoyed with the podrick think like oh cool let's waste 40 minutes of this season talking about a pretty unimportant character's sex life, and completely botch up other characters storylines because we "don't have time" ooooohhhhkay.
yeah, i'm SO annoyed at everything they've done with bran since he got pushed off the tower. they are fucking up every aspect of him being a greenseer and a warg. is it even shown in the show that he is a warg? and him reaching out to jon too and awakening his third eye and allowing him to be a warg...JON DOESN'T EVEN HAVE GHOST AT THIS POINT IN THE SHOW. anddddddddddd, arya has wolf dreams too. fucking pissing me off. and i like the way the actors are playing the reeds, but their not being handled properly by the writers. my boyfriend thinks they're evil for instance. when they were introduced i ask him what he thought about them since they're my favorite characters in the books and he goes "i don't like them. i don't get what they're doing and get a bad feeling from them." so that pretty much sums up how well their plot is being handled..

Am I the only person that's a little bored by this season so far? So many things are happening at once, yet nothing happens. There's a lot of talk, and a lot of exposition, and I have very little idea what's happening with Theon, or with Arya, or with Bran. Nobody else is dizzied by the fact that there's like 30 simultaneous plots and each proceeds just a few meters per week?
okay here's a quick recap from what is going on from my viewpoint of being up to date on the show and up to the first few chapters of book 3-
Theon: Theon was captured by northmen-Roose Bolton's specifically at Winterfell at the end of the last season. This is indicated in the show by the method of torture for him, for those who pay close attention.

that's about it on theon's storyline. he's being tortured by bolton's men/bannermen and just being totally mindfucked.

Arya: She escaped Harrenhall with the help of Ja'quen Hagar, who is part of a special group of killers in Braavos. I can't recall the name of them. The Faceless Men? They're elite killers who only believe in the God of Death, that every man must die (vala morghuilis) and every man must serve (valar dohaeris). Therefore they believe that they're duty is to serve the God of Death by killing. They can be hired to kill for a very expensive price and were mentioned in season 1 by Varys when the small council was discussing how to handle Daenerys Targaryen and the possibility of killing her. She was told how to contact him or his group by Ja'quen. After their departure her, Gendry, and Hot Pie are traveling through the Riverlands in an attempt to get to Riverrun. They have a run in with the Brotherhood Without Banners. The Brotherhood is the group of men led by Beric Dondarrion that were sent into the Riverlands by Ned Stark in Season 1 (when he was The Hand) to go after Gregor Celgane/The Mountain (The Hound's Brother), who was pillaging the Riverlands on presumed orders from Tywin Lannister. This was pre-war, but a good start to it. I believe it occurred right after Robert Baratheon died, the Lannister's could tell that a war was brewing, and Catelyn Stark/Tully had already taken Tyrion Lannister. Therefore, Tywin made an "attack" on the Riverlands (Tully territory) as retaliation/the first actual act of war. By weakening the smallfolk, destorying their lands/crops; he was effectively weakening the opposition before any battles could have even begun. Beric Dondarrion's group has attracted others, and they continue to protect the smallfolk in the Riverlands, or attempt to. Beric Dondarrion is one of Ned Stark's men, along with some of the other's in the group. Upon realizing that they had found Arya Stark, they are protecting her and taking her to Robb safely. Hot Pie decided to stay at the inn that the Brotherhood took her to, as he is not a figher, not a lord, and just wants to be safe. Gendry associates with the Brotherhood and likes them, he wants to stay with them knowing he won't be just serving a lord. Arya wants to be with her family at Riverrun, but is sad that Gendry will not follow her there. The reason he won't is their class/social differences.

Bran: Bran fled Winterfell after it's destruction from Theon's invasion with his little brother Rickon, the wildling Osha, his servant Hodor, and their two wolves: Summer and Shaggydog. Bran has a magical connection to his wolf, where in his dreams he enters the body of his wolf. He is a warg, like the wildling that Jon Snow is encountering beyond the wall who sees through the eagle. Bran also has other type's of magical dreams, called "greendreams" which indicates he is a "greenseer" and a person with "green sight". He can see premonitions, things that are happening elsewhere, etc in various metaphors or actual images in his dreams. The Reeds: Jojen (the boy) and Meera (the girl) are bannermen to the Starks and from swamplands somewhere. They traveled far to find Bran because Jojen also has "greensight" and many of his "green dreams" revolved around Bran and he believed that he must go to him to aid him. They have found Bran, and Jojen is attempting to teach Bran how to navigate his "green dreams" and his "wolf/warg dreams" to develop the skills that Bran became gifted with upon his fall and acquiring the direwolf. Jojen seems to have plans for Bran beyond this regarding his "greensight" and wants to travel with Bran somewhere "We've come a long way to find you Bran, and we still have a long way to go." Anything that Jojen does can be assumed to be in regards to the greensight. Meera does not have any magical skill or power, but is a good fighter. She protects her brother and believes in his greensight. She has physical strength and he has mental strength. They are both very devoted to Bran, even before meeting him.
Maybe it would be better if each episode focused on 1 or 2 locations? As with the battle of Blackwater Bay? I, too, noticed that actually the story of each character hardly advances in a single episode.

I've never had the books in my hands so I wonder - are particular seasons related to particular books? Like: one season - one part of the saga? If not, how much content of the books does one season cover?
I agree with you on that. Might be better to narrow it down to a few characters per episode instead of hopping all over the place. It does feel very rushed this season, although I do enjoy it.
Season 1&2 focused on books 1&2. At this point though the writers have stated they're no longer doing book by book adaptations, but looking at the series as a whole and adapting ASOIAF holistically. This is evident by the storyline, as many of the things happening now happened at the end of book 2, while others are far into book 3. This is partly due to how George paced things in the book, with so many locations the timeline goes very wonky and although chapters are happening back to back, they could be chronologically months-years apart.
^The seasons are covering specific books. Season one was book one, season 2 was book 2. This season is the first half of book 3. Next season will be the other half. And so on.... In book 3, there's too much happenings to cover in a 11-12 episode season.

The books chapters are told from the perspective of a particular character. They bounce around a lot. Sometimes one of the plot lines will be returned to every few chapters. Ned's, for example.
Others, like say, Davos, will have a chapter and then you may not have another one from his perspective for half the book.
The show mirrors the books as much as they seem to be able to. Davos was rescued off the little isle he was stranded on, tried to attack Melisandre, and we haven't heard from him since. I'm not hinting at anything in regard to Davos future. I'm just using him as a example of one character whose plot line will appear and then disappear for a pretty large amount of time.
In the books, there's one main character that disappeared for over 2000 pages. The show changed it, but the point withstands.
When they do reappear, it's usually apparent why they've been absent. Other times it seems to be simply because the author or the show has felt the need to resolve something else that's going on.

The other day, I was thinking about what would happen if GRRM died. He takes so long to finish the books. It's certainly not out of the question.
I really, really hope that doesn't happen. IMO, ASOIAF is second or third to Tolkien's work as far as fantasy goes. It would be fairly devastating to not have a true resolution to the story. Or have some other fantasy writer appointed to wrap things up.
It also seems a possibility that the show may catch up to the books. They may need to slow down the show even more, at some point.
That would be a interesting situation. Show goes on hiatus until he gives them more material. He needs to write faster. For like a million reasons.

For the people that are somewhat frustrated by the shows pace, I would preach patience.
The sometimes tedious pace of the early episodes was mostly necessary to set up what is to come. It will pick up more and it's gonna be good.
He's told Dan and Dave everything they need to know to finish the series according to his overall plans. He has planned out whose going to be on the iron throne before it's over. It's all taken care of, the details just need to be filled in. But they all know where they're going.
Yeah, this season is starting to get really fucking good. Past two episodes have been beyond awesome.
Yeah, these past 2 were by far my favorite.
This was the best episode of the series. So far......
I was searching, hoping Patchface would be in that room with Shireen. That kind of sucks. Otherwise it was just about flawless. Fucking awesome.
I know! I was hoping for Patchface!! It doesn't seem they're showing any of the fools though in the show :\ I liked how they had the Patchface song at the end though. Was veryyy eerie. So glad Shireen is finally in it!

^I agree with you that Brienne calling Jaime "woman" had more effect then anything. Like you're saying, the insult that's gonna have the most effect is the one that's most derisive to the person you're going after.
Jaime berated her, referring to her as "wench" all those times. Certainly seems(seemed?) that he didn't place much worth in women's bravery or fighting ability, etc...
So, yeah. Calling him a woman would have much more of the impact she was looking for. It doesn't mean she thinks less of women or that GRRM, or the writers do, either.

The BWB's and The Reed's.... If I was just watching the show, I would no clue who they are for the most part. Good on you for hashing it out a bit.
The Reed's are really cool characters. The kids and Ned's buddy.
I agree they're doing a incomplete(being kind) job with Bran's storyline. I still feel like his storyline is gonna be minimized. Mainly because, without a lot of screen-time eating dialogue, it's gonna be very hard to convey what's going.
The casting on the show is nearly flawless. I really don't like this Meera, though. She just doesn't look right.

There's definitely stuff that's being skimped on, or is confusing, but overall I'd say they're doing a pretty spectacular job of packing in as much as they can without it ever feeling too rushed.

I understand what you're saying in regards to them having an outline of the ending of the series, who's gonna "win".
I would say that having a outline with a good amount of details and having the actual books or manuscripts with all the ridiculous amounts of detail that would be packed into 3,000 pages would make for two very different end results.

I'm a bit pissed about the discrimination towards the fools in the series. Dontos and Butterbumps weren't big deals, but leaving out Patchface could, maybe, cause some problems down the line.
I guess, taking into account that she's singing his lines and all, that Shireen is Patchface, Patchface is Shireen. I suppose that's OK. I just wanted to see his motley tattooing and most of all his jingle bells antlers. Bullshit. Oh well. :).
The singing was a bit creepy, for sure.
