Somehow I have seen scenes from Howl's Moving Castle (repeatedly) while I was in a state probably, and now there is something about the witch that absolutely annoys the living piss out of me.

Not sure if that is a common phenomenon?

A different question now, do you guys have suggestions for avant-garde flicks for me (metaphysical or not), like the Cremaster Series or Holy Mountain, like seriously experimental WTF movies?

Try Fernando Arrabal. Friend of Jodorowsky's who made very similar fillums... only far, far, far more tripped out. Only made a few - and they're kinda rare - but if you like El Topo and the like you will approve %)

As for other avant-garde stuff, just read through previous iterations of this thread. Fuckloads to be found. Cultured lot are EADDers. Except the ones that ain't.

Also, Cremaster Cycle <3

I take it "Seven Psychopaths" was mentioned in this thread before? that one is great <3

Watched that and 'in Bruges' in the same weekend on MXE together with my housemate / friend. Top notch.

yes I see the have already been mentioned...

What about 'The Wackness', did you like it? Reminds me a bit of David Clark's "Kids" which is a classic.
And 'Thirteen', it's a while since I have seen that but I thought it was good.
All of these are movies about struggling kids I guess but I like the old skool NYC hiphop stuff a whole lot extra.

And thanks for the advice shambles, I'm turning pages!
And yea I liked El Topo but The Holy Mountain was way better IMO, El Topo got a bit weak around halfway.

Holy Mountain was possibly his masterpiece. El Topo got mentioned as Arrabal's films tend to be largely desert-based. And more fukked up than Jodorowsky ever got. Cinematic poetry at it's most psychedelic <3

I barely dare ask but... I presume you like Werner Herzog? Am thinking more of his documentaries than his films (although his films are lush <3). His documentaries are jaw-droppingly good. I'm pretty certain you will like if you don't already.

I know of him, my best friend/housemate is a total filmfreak and studied media and I am sure he knows a lot about him and his films, which ones are must-watch in particular?

Also if you want some utter bullshit campy strangeness watch "Bronco Gentlemen", what a bunch of nonsense in Napoleon Dynamite style but without the disappointing level of being so clearly intentional and self-conscious about it. Had a blast on it with a friend, then watched it again with my now-ex and she was "not amused".
And I have heard that Priscilla, queen of the Desert or some movie titled like that is something not to be missed. Getting myself interested now. Is getting interested the same as getting sleepy? Damn it I need much more zopiclone to make that logic work.

Herzog must watches? Excuse the lack of linkies - cannae be arsed cos pissed ;)

Films?

Aguirre: Wrath of God
Fitzcarraldo
Nosferatu the Vampire
Fata Morgana (especially if you like Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi and the like)
Stroszek (film Ian Curtis (of Joy Division fame) watched just before killiing himself... but ain't quite that depressing... unless yer highstrung)
Bad Lieutenant

Docs?

Lessons of Darkness (stunning <3)
God's Angry Men
Little Dieter Needs to Fly
Grizzly Man
Death for Five Voices
Encounters at the World's End

...

I could go on ;)

Those are all personal recommendations but frankly anything with the name "Werner Herzog" involved is all but essential viewing. Hypnotic cinematography, deep subject matter, wicked sense of humour, sharp social conscience.... Need I go on? <3

Just finished watching this (it was lovely and I cried):

(knock: you'll like this .. it's quiet & understated but lovely and character focused, and with a robot so especially lovely)

Robot & Frank (2012)

I'm off to see my brother for a few days on Tuesday so I'm putting together some entertainment for the train journey. I've added this to the list, thanks!

Watched "There Will Be Blood" and "Good Will Hunting" yesterday, excellent films

"There will be Blood "is a certifiable classic

"I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE" !!!
Is Paul Thomas Anderson the best director around?
I think so

It will take him a long long time to top " Boogie Nights" but as far as body of work goes I think his is second to none
IMO he is already better than Scorcese or his late idol Robert Altman

Shambles if you like Herzog check out his doc on Buddhism " Wheel of time"

Simply awesome

You might be interested in "The Guard" if you like those two. Same dark comedy style, written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, Martin McDonagh's older bro.

Watched Two-Headed Shark Attack last night.. not bad* if you like multi-headed sharks and bikinis. (*Clearly this is an awful film, but fun if quite wasted.)

Sailor trailer

720p whole film Sailor (2010) Norman Leto 720p

enjoying this.

The portrait of an egotistical, politically incorrect, misanthropic academic, and his torrid romantic entanglements. An anti-hero who may or may not be a skewed alter ego of Norman Leto, Sailor's one-man-band director.

Has Mr Nobody been suggested?

That is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. :)

Seen that Jack the Giant Slayer riding high on the torrent sites. Never heard of it though so not bothered to delve. Sounds like either great or dire.

Shadow People sounds great with no reserve though =D

Got a few fillums to be catching up on. Have fallen asleep each time I've tried to watch one of late though 8)
