On one hand, I kind of agree. On the other, I think it's a pile of bullshit.

Too much incest, not enough exposition. Also, it could have at least had an ending. I'm not totally certain of my opinion on Dogtooth because (despite all the bullshit) it was well-made and offered some interesting insight, but I would never recommend it to someone. It's definitely more art than entertainment.

dragged on too much. i really like everything else except the pace. was on the brink of nodding off towards the end.

Metropolis (Restored) - Stunning. Absolutely Stunning. As someone who doesn't particularly like silent movies, this one kept me completely mesmerized from beginning to end. Now I get what all of the fuss is about.

Fucking awesome.

as the title suggests, about the struggle to find purpose and direction. i think. didn't watch this one too close. cookie cutter American Beauty movie. nothing great about it.


i went to the theater and saw Silver Linings Playbook, but i don't know what it's about. i'll need to see it again. my father said it was no good.

13 Assassins - I was trying to decide if I should watch a Kurosawa film or this one (because Takashi Miike is one of my favorite modern Japanese directors)...I think I chose poorly. 13 Assassins is a boring movie. The first 3/4 of the film are spent in meetings and houses and the like in order to cram in as much exposition as possible before the big climactic fight scene, which takes up the entirety of the last 45 minutes. The big fight scene itself drags on and on and on and on and on and on - to the point where I was just begging for it to be over so I could stop watching. Longest 2 hour movie I've ever seen.
 
Movie 43 - Very interesting how US pushes boundaries Funny moments

comes out next Friday. Totally recommend checking out
 
Beasts of the Southern Wild

Saw this with my nine year old. Not what I was expecting but not too bad either. Was hoping for something similar to where the wild things are. It's the world from the view of this six year old living in abject poverty and alcoholism. Can't say I enjoyed it, but we didn't want to stop watching either. :/

The Yellow Sea - A Korean cabbie, deeply in debt, is contracted to kill a man in order to pay back the men he owes. Awesome movie. After watching The Yellow Sea I'm convinced that the US needs to confiscate everyone's guns, if only to make action movies more exciting. This film would have been over in ten minutes if any of the characters had access to firearms instead of just knives/axes/hambones to beat each other with - as a result, the action scenes are suspenseful and exhilarating. Another solid Revenge-Thriller from Korea.

Kagemusha - Three rival lords vie for power in feudal Japan, and when one of them is killed his clan must find a doppleganger or risk exposing their vulnerability to their enemies. Kagemusha is a beautiful movie and Kurosawa's use of color in his shot composition is masterful. The acting is as good as can be expected from a Japanese film and the script is well-written and contains a lot of subtext. That being said, the pacing is painfully slow and I found myself close to nodding off at the end. All in all I liked Kagemusha, but it's not my favorite Kurosawa film.
