John Dies at the End - I'm a fan of Cracked.com editor David Wong (who wrote the source material) and I really enjoyed Bubba Ho-Tep (whose director shot this film), but I couldn't get over how fucking stupid this movie was. With the exception of Paul Giamatti (who I can't believe agreed to be in this, despite only having about 10 minutes of screen time), every single actor was atrocious. The story can be described thusly: two friends take a crazy drug that allows them to see demons and shit, basically turning them into the brothers from Supernatural. The themes of drug use, madness and "What is reality?" are fine and dandy, and even got me interested in the beginning of the film (despite the amateur production), but it just gets stupider and stupider as the plot rolls on...and not in an endearingly campy way like Bubba Ho-Tep.

What's worse is that I paid $10 for this trash - never again. It's Netflix or Piracy from here on out.

Fucking pretencious Tarantiuno wanna be, holy shit this is as bad as django.

^ I haven't seen Django Unchained yet (my expectations for it are relatively low anyawy), but I certainly hope it's not as bad as JDATE.

Mother - A film about a mentally challenged man (don't call him a retard!) convicted of murdering a teenage girl and his mother's attempts to prove his innocence. Joon-ho Bong does an excellent job of creating a story where morality is ambiguous and nothing is as it seems - by the end, you won't even be sure who is good, who is bad, and who is simply a victim of circumstance. A solid Korean flick. Recommended.

Top film! Saw it about a year ago in my Korean Film phase, and it was definitely one of the best I saw.

Scorpio Rising(1964)
Kenneth Anger
7/10

An army of gay/nazi bikers make their engines roar and ride the way to pain/pleasure as sexual and sadistic symbols are intercut into the dazing chaos and rhythmic experiences of this underground film by cult director Anger.

Barking Dogs Never Bite - An aspiring, broke, grad student struggles with the difficulties of his professional and personal lives while being driven crazy by the many dogs in his apartment complex. A very enjoyable, wonderfully-shot, dark comedy. Also it's Korean.

I've yet to see Moonrise Kingdom, but Fantastic Mr. Fox was a really enjoyable fiilm. It was funny and had an entertaining story line. The characters were all great, wasn't any annoying Jar Jar Binks type characters, and the animation made it visually appealing. Even in animation you can still tell it's a Wes Anderson film.

Funny Games (Austrian) - Two teens forcefully insert themselves into a wealthy German couple's vacation and proceed to fuck shit up. I've seen a couple Michael Haneke films before (The White Ribbon and Cache) but this one really cemented my respect for him as a director. Meticulously crafted, painfully raw and just enough random 'artsiness' to keep you thinking after the credits have rolled. Really enjoyed this one.

^ I caught the remake of that a while ago before I even knew who Michael Pitt was and thought it was pretty good but never seen the original

Guess I should check it out?

It's the same film shot for shot. Even the dialogue is the same. And the original is Austrian not German.

^ Having not seen the re-make I can only say that it would be hard to top the performance of Arno Frisch (who played Paul in the original).

Both very good in different aspects. Both amazing. Michael Pitt is one of my fav US actors, but he also abides by the american school of method acting, while Arno really just feels like he is a natural psychopath. Tough to judge, you have to see them both to make your own mind up.

i watched georgia rule last night.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0791304/

essentially, lynette from desperate housewives has gone mad and adopted lindsay lohan. after leaving tom (from desperate housewives) for good, she remarried a child molester. then she decided to adopt lindsay lohan as she thought she could help her. how wrong she could be. lindsay is a serial life destroyer, attempting to make men go down on her because she's a silly whore, while also insulting a man who lost his wife and child in a car accident. she then proceeds to essentially rape a strict christian boy and ruin his so far innocent life by introducing herself to him and giving him a blowjob while he had a girlfriend. lindsay is very sad and upset that the local school girls call her a whore for doing so because she believes she isn't.

lynette after learning about lindsay being molested as a child now becomes a chronic alcoholic again. meanwhile the grandmother (whom they are meant to be visiting in georgia, the whole point of the film) has some serious mental issues that i can't even really begin to describe. she likes little children in her house and can only prepare and eat meals at 6am 12am and 6pm.

overall 5/10 - misleading title and synopsis

... it was only 21 minutes -not sure if i could done much longer then that- and part of a 2 disk compilation. definitely check it out, there is no dialog, and it does progress intensely in part for this reason; all there is to do is guess at what they are thinking.

Secret Sunshine(2007)

"Sin-ae moves with her son Jun to Miryang, the town where her dead husband was born. As she tries to come to herself and set out on new foundations, another tragic event overturns her life."

S. Korea looks really cool.

Dogtooth - From beginning to end, this movie is one long uncomfortable boner.

Also it's total bullshit and a complete waste of time.

^great movie.

Happy Campers

i haven't seen this since it came out a dozer years ago, so i'm counting it as new. but i do remember seeing it with my friend way back when. we liked it for all the right reasons. the movie is full of convention and cliche, but it uses those rails as something to coast on while swinging at bit after bit of enjoyable stimuli.

james king is credited as james king. her character is very influenced by her modeling persona. she looks like a model in it. editorial eyeshadow. the paolo roversi sticks-in-the-hair thing. "Slectected clothing for Pixel [her character] created by Elisa Jimenez/The Hunger World" in the credits. she is the ethereal waif. it was filmed in 1999, so she must have just gotten out of rehab after her boyfriend OD'd. the end of her real modeling career--revlon ads for dollars aside.

her character is cold. "satanic whore." loves life, but a fairy creature. too fickle for romantic love. she kisses dominique swain while wearing a tiara. in another scene, crawls into her bed and walks a hand on dominique's nightie in an effort to comfort her about a boy. so the movie knows what's good, even though it is another finding-yourself-in-the-haze-of-society movie for teens. and it's not just king. the movie is summery, nostalgic youth without forgetting the darkness. nice to watch.
