drug-fuelled mother drops tv on baby sons head

Yeah honestly heroin, valium and alcohol seem likely, but when I first clicked the thread I imagined meth.

Anyone is capable of anything when addiction begins to horrifically escalate.

^ TBH it seems like your rather trying to demonize the mother :\

It seems to me she got high as fuck and wanted to put on a movie for her kid so he at least wouldn't be wandering around the house or something. Obviously that is still VERY irresponsible, but it's not like she just had absolutely NO regard for her child's safety.

She was probably just too fucked up while trying to put on The Wiggles, knocked over the TV and the child just happened to be sitting there.... the same thing could have happened if she was sober.

I was going to respond, but several people who posted above did most of it for me ;)
Maybe my perspective on this is different than yours - I am a parent.
I enjoy drugs very much, but I have never been responsible for my kids (or any others) while totally fucked out of my mind.
I have smoked weed or drunk a glass of wine while playing with my kids, and even taken san pedro cactus and ayahuasca while they were in the same house, but their mother was responsible for them (and completely sober) at the time.
I cannot understand how someone could get royally fucked while having full responsibility for their kids (unless maybe their kids are 17 at the time:) ). When I had a 4-month old infant, I felt incredibly high just to have such a beautiful being in my family. The intensity of the birth was fading slightly, but I did not need to take drugs to feel amazing.
If someone else wants to take heroin with a 4-month old in the house, I think it is a shame, but also that it is their right to do so (or should be, anyway). But if they get so fucked up that they might knock over a heavy TV without knowing it, that is too fucked up to take care of a baby. Knocking the TV over on the baby was really bad luck, but the fact that she got so fucked up despite having the responsibility is the real problem, in my mind. I would punish all parents who disregard their responsibility for their children in such a way, if I could, but we don't know about most of them. In this case, because of bad luck, we found out about it. I don't think that she should be charged with murder - or possession/use of drugs, which shouldn't be crimes at all in my mind - but she definitely needs to re-think her priorities, which clearly involve drugs taking precedence over parenting.

How dare all of you judge this poor woman! You don't know her or her life story. Maybe she was abused as a child and needed these drugs to self-medicate, cope and have a somewhat of a quality life. Maybe she had the child through rape and incest, further exacerbating the downward spiral she was on. You don't know and you never will! As if all of you casting judgement are perfect and have never done anything regrettable especially in regards to drugs. So what, does hearing about someone else's misfortunate make you feel better about your own lowly lives? SHAME ON ALL OF YOU! "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone"

I'm REALLY kind of hoping you only meant that possesion/use of drugs shouldn't be a crime not that murder shouldn't.

Yes, I knew what you meant (I hope and think), but upon my first reading I was like ....ummmm....did I just read that?

Seriously, I personally think she (they) should at least be charged with accidental manslaughter. I mean it's not murder without intent, but yeah they maybe shouldn't be roaming free after that one. I understand it was probably aa fluke accident, but it was also one where both parents should be held accountable for their negligence.

Regarding that last post I am judgemental, but I judge by the standards I'd hope to be judged by. If any of those scenarios were the case they were still responsible for another life and criminally negligent.

well i was going to say out of this but what a lame attempt at getting out the fact you over steeped the mark this a text book attempt at shifting focus from you and never mind using what iv said happened to me as a way of justiving her appalling behavior . you mr wonderfull need to grow up

yeah whatever- if you have a child you have a responsibility to not be that fucked up. nothing can justify being that careless. i have drugged up friends who are mothers and they never do shit like this

Everyone can live to the moral high ground of don't hurt others willingly or through gross negligence. Or well, apparently you're right ...they can't. but should be punished for their failure to do so. I cut no slack on this basic premise regardless of an individual's circumstance. If she had such an awful life that she had to escape through drugs (hey it might have not been an escape, but just fun for her) she is still responsible for the life she should have been guarding. In fact if her life was particularly awful I'd argue for having more a responsibility to not be awful herself. I'm sure she and the father are torn up about this, but that's not enough.

I'm REALLY kind of hoping you only meant that possesion/use of drugs shouldn't be a crime not that murder shouldn't.

Yes, you are correct. My statement looks pretty ambiguous now that I read it, but I definitely believe murder should be a crime!

And I agree with you about manslaughter. And also this:

I judge by the standards I'd hope to be judged by.

This.
If she was unable to handle the responsibility of a child, there were ways to give up the child so that it could live safely with other people.
She decided to take and keep the responsibility, but then ignored the responsibility in order to use drugs.
Whether she really was abused, etc. is irrelevant at this point.
She is responsible for her choices. She is not a child.

You still don't know her life and her situation. You can't just make a blanket statement like that. Not everyone can live up to your holier-than-thou moral high ground.

Since when has the opinion that you shouldn't get fucked up to the point that you kill your child been classified as a "holier-than-thou moral high ground?"

Her life and her situation are completely irrelevant. By choosing to keep the baby, she assumed responsibility for it. She failed, and now she will quite rightly suffer the consequences.

Actually while it was somewhat ambiguous it was clear enough that I could tell your intent. I just tend to find the silly in most everything.

Hell, I'm wondering what the low ground is if this is the high.

Nobody is excused from preventable manslaughter because they had a "difficult upbringing". It doesn't work that way.
Would you excuse a drunk driver who kills a family in a motor vehicle accident, because he's having a difficult time at home with his wife, and his dad beat him as a child?
How about a bank robber who has never had more than $1000 to his name until he robbed a bank? Does he get a free pass, too, because life's been so hard on him?

If she was so tanked to not realise the risk of injury or death from falling heavy objects, then she was mentally unfit to be a parent.
If she did realise the risk but did nothing to mitigate it (like move her child 2 or 3 feet away), that makes her a negligent parent.

There is really no way you can frame this as an "unfortunate accident". If she were sober and the kid impaled himself on a kitchen knife while running, maybe it would be an accident then. Dropping a TV on a (presumably sleeping) child when doped out is not.

i'm not gonna feed you troll

your bait is tasty and i want to nibble but no, i must decline or this thread will be a mess

These types of stories are so sickening and disturbing to read.

So incredibly sad.
