President Juan Manuel Santos has given the go-ahead to Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro's plan to prescribe otherwise illicit drugs to addicts in the Colombian capital, according to Colombian press reports (and Colombia Reports, the first English-language source with the story). The announcement came after the pair met to discuss the matter Friday.

"We will create physical spaces in the most violent zones of the city where the drug addicts, mostly youth, can get away from being illegal and dependent on the criminal gangs," Petro said after the meeting.

The primary problematic drug on the streets of Bogota is, unsurprisingly, cocaine.

The colorful, left-leaning mayor, who suffered death threats after exposing broad links between the right-wing paramilitaries and Colombian politicians as a senator and who came in fourth in the 2010 presidential elections, first proposed the idea of drug consumption sites last month, but Santos was initially cool to the idea.

"A large part of the violence and crime that still persists in the city derives from the small-scale consumption and trafficking of drugs ... We should allow some centers for addicts that provide treatment ... where the addict can consume under relative control, without doing damage to society," Petro said when he initially broached the idea.

Santos seemed dubious when he responded days later. "This leap into the dark seems irresponsible to me because one could cause a lot of damage to society, youth and the country," he said.

But Petro appears to have swayed him, confirming after the meeting that the national government had approved his proposal. He needed the government's approval for constitutional reasons, he said.

"The only way to authorize the use of illicit drugs is if it is part of a medical treatment and prescribed by a doctor. We dared to present this proposal publicly, but we could not implement without permission from the national government."

It's unclear at this point when the plan will be implemented. It's also unclear how the idea of providing addicts prescriptions for their drugs is going to play with the International Narcotics Control Board, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, and the US government, but it looks like the Colombian government of President Santos is willing to test the limits.

Who gives a shit! After 40 years of an ineffective war on drugs, we need brave and courageous politicians like this.

does the government sell the cocaine? Does it produce it? Will they finally make it without levamisole???

Could I smoke crack there all day every day for free?

^^ lmao . shame our lot will just look at this as bullshit and come up with every reason under the sun as to why it will fail and why we will never follow this example of insanity as they will call it

It is sad to say that I'd bet every other country in the world would legalize drugs before the U.S. does and finally, then, the US would legalize quietly, pretending as if it was our idea all along.

I am confident that I will live to see that day. And I am not planning to grow old so we better get our shit together :D. But for real we have made so much progress over the last 5 years it is stunning.

i think i will be to old to enjoy or even know or care by the time the uk move any where near hollands idea let alone this one but by then i could be so drugged out of it on legal drugs meds i still could class it as one in the eye for me :)

Lol 5 star mother fucking post
I'm curious as to how this is going to be

What will be there dose, do they just come there when ever they want and snort/shoot/smoke there daily dose of cocaine?

I feel like opiate maintenance like this would work the same way but with cocaine you're always wanting that next hit and never satisfied...

Wow Petro is a very forward-thinking man! This probably won't happen in the US for a hundred years. But by then there will probably be a better stimulant made. Maybe not though, THC and morphine have stood the test of time.:)

There was a time in the US where doctors could prescribe cocaine to stabilize an addict. But addiction was viewed by the government as a criminal and moral problem, not a disease. It was disputed in the courts, then the Supreme Court ruled that maintaining an addict is drug dealing and not a treatment, for a criminal, not a medical, problem. IIRC 10,000 doctors were imprisoned! I think the UK did cocaine maintenance for longer, not sure when they stopped.

I wonder how they're going to work out the logistics of cocaine maintenance. Methadone only needs once a day dosing, but cocaine need to be dosed at least once an hour. Will there be take-homes, or is it basically a hospital and crackhouse in one? What ROA(PO, IN, IV, IM/SC or even smoked)?

This may sound crazy to the straight layperson, but it totally makes sense. Legit coke, being a by-product of Coca-Cola production, is cheap as dog shit. Street coke is dirty and expensive. Give the crackhead pure cocaine in controlled doses. It puts them in contact with medical professionals. They can treat the cocaine-related health problems if they arise and put them in contact with some treatment for addiction and mental illness. The two often go hand and hand.

I think that giving ER amphetamine or methylphenidate, like they did in Canada, is more practical in terms of diversion prevention. However, they aren't consider a suitable replace for many cocaine enthusiast. I have wondered why not phenmetrazine? It's CII in many countries even though Preludin's off the market. AFAIK it's not a neurotoxin, easier on the heart and probably is better than methylphenidate(many on BL seem to hate it, I love it).

I just hope all these South American countries actually put this into action, rather than just saying it. The ramifications of South American legalizaing drugs will send shockwaves across the world. The U.N and the U.S will accuse South America of being soft on drugs and sending the wrong message that doing drugs is ok!

And if they use high quality cocaine to the addicts, it probably is an incentive to go there instead of the dealer, the docs got better gear!
