Cannabis smokers 'risk lower IQ'

Which is another bullshit argument, extremely flawed that one.

I must admit i'm not a fan of older people saying 'in my day weed was fine, in your day it's not'. But I do happen to think that if it's THC causing the loss of intelligence, then higher thc must surely equal greater loss of intelligence.

The word in bold is moot there don't you think?

Ps I'm working class to the point of poverty. But I'm shit hot at IQ tests.

Well, I don't know if it's THC or the cannabinoids or the time spent using drugs that could be spent doing homework, do I?

FYI I don't see there being a link between class and intelligence, I was trying to say high intelligence families vs lower intelligence families without treading on people's toes. The adoption studies dealt with children being adopted from unstable welfare families into professional families, which do correlate with IQ. I am from an upper working class/lower middle class family and I do OK in IQ tests. (Funnily enough I took a large well known one stoned and got in the top 0.8%, but my computational speed was drastically lowered lol)

No. But it matters how you measure it.

And why.

If they felt there was a part missing in terms of raw intelligence and cognitive ability they would add it, wouldn't they? It already covers verbal, mathmatical, spatial, visualisation, classification, logic and pattern recognition. These are all vital in jobs that require high cognitive ability. It's not as if having a high rythm IQ is going to help you be a brain surgeon, or anything but a good musician or dancer.

as SHM says, the IF is crucial there, that's not been proven at all.

And it's not just a case of "do as I say, not as I did". The weed people smoke today is not necessarily higher in THC, the hash people smoke today is certainly many many times less potent than the hash that would have predominantly been smoked until say 1990ish.....

A lot of the comparative figures on THC content are based on low quality Mexican bushweed samples in the US, for some reason those figures stand and are accepted as being the level of THC that was in the weed that people smoked then.

If i was to take a piece of soapbar today, or even fuckin "polm", I could "prove" to you that people in the 1970's smoked weed/hash with much higher percentage of THC than people do today.

Why do you point that out as if I didn't put the 'if' in because I wasn't 100% sure it was that causing the cognitive decline? I am fully aware it could be any number of ingredients in cannabis causing a lowering of the persons IQ. I also know that hash has been fairly consistently high in THC content over the years if you could get good stuff. Weed on the other hand was generally out door grown, the strains were weaker (because it was to my knowledge primarily weed and not sens being smoked?), and it was definitely lower in thc, even if you - like every drug user in the world apparently, smoked da best stuff innit.

If you're at all interested in looking at the stats, here they are:

I know the tactics they use. But it's hard to deny there has been a shift, due to legality pushing grows inside, from using imported weed toward using hydroponically grown sens. The site I linked you to is an anti-drug war site, so they are biased toward's us. But you can see from the data that the amount of sens siezed has gone up and so has potency, seizure of normal weed has gone down. It's not particularly important to me either way, I just don't think it's a good idea for teenagers to be using any drugs while their brains are developing.

And here we agree which is why your early insults in this thread were silly and counter-productive.

And btw "agreeing" does not mean we are on the same "side". Mr Very Grim used the same rationale to put me on your "side" in the shit throwing that you got banned for. Can you (both) not see how stupid it is to see things in this way? He puts me on your side, you put me on his side.

Sides are rubbish. Straight thinking. The world is not straight.

I've already said, I agree with this. :)

The shift has been towards weed, until the 90's predominantly in the UK people smoked hash, imported hash, which had much higher THC content than weed grown indoors now. I guess it became more commercially viable at that point for the smugglers/kingpins/overlords to turn to growing indoors in controlled environments in UK/EU countries.

All of the strongest weeds I've smoked have been from old landrace strains, bred from seeds collected in the 60's/70's, often by outdoor growers from US/UK/EU.........all of today's weed has been bred from old landrace strains, none of today's strains have been genetically modified, just fine tuned through selective breeding...

EDIT>>>>>and this selective breeding, in most cases, has not been with the aim of producing higher THC levels, but to develop a reliable, stocky, consistent, high yielding plant...in many, if not most cases, modern hybrids will have lower THC content than the original breeding stock...(assuming the stock plants have been grown with high levels of care indoors)...a lot of the bigger breeders *cough*greenhouse*cough* just cross anything to create a new named strain buzzword...and then its all about the hype, not the potency....

I DO accept that back then, most weed that was available to most weed smokers was generally pollinated bushweed....but again, most people in EU/UK would have been smoking hash, of a higher THC content. I don't know what the figures would look like in US where more people smoked weed, generally Mexican bushweed.....

I've kind of lost my thread, fucking stoned innit.

Pffft ... My Blue Cheese better be stronger than 11% thc for £10 a g!

It won't be.

The world is not straight.

has anyone got a jpg to illustrate this?

I know you can't stand to admit you're gradually moving to my side, but I know you are. One day we will consumate our siding together. I can't wait. I am the top by the way. MM can be the versatile.

Why does it matter what class these children were from? It was the same group of children that had their IQs tested years later and the researchers observed a drop in the same people's IQs.

Also, you mightn't value IQ as an intelligence test, but I'd rather have an IQ of 150 than an IQ of 80 all the same.

I have to agree with this guy here. Most drugs affect the part of your brain that you use to make decisions (can't remember the name of it) and evaluate risk which obviously can have negative consequences for a developing brain. I think your brain is only fully developed around the age of 25, so if you've been using drugs regularly since 15, you can only imagine the effects it would have on your mental functioning. As well as that, it has been proven that if you start drinking alcohol at a young age, you're more likely to suffer from alcoholism. I'm sure the same applies when it comes to illegal drugs.
