Capote

i hate biopics. i love philip seymour hoffman. this movie is bland. almost two hours long and it still feels like it glosses over the story.

Promises
documentary where some palenstinian kids meet some israeli kids. good.

The Mudge Boy
coming of age story about a gay kid who grows up in a rural farm area, i really liked it. sweet, sad.

The Ice Storm
a lot of very famous faces in this, chistina ricci, elijah wood, sigourney weaver. i was kind of bored with the white person problems aspect and the kind of forced quirkiness but i think it worked in the end. it does a good job of showing how the most loving families can be fucked below the surface despite functioning as a whole, i think.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil (2010)

A comedy horror, but actually a really funny and enjoyable one! One of the best light-hearted films I have watched all year.

Tops its genre from what I've seen, but that isn't exactly difficult based on most 'spoof' films. Definitely recommend!

fucking hell, i didn't see this come up as a graphic last time. well, i am too lazy to upload pics and i hate summarizing films. i am not too concise or articulate about it. that was Lilja 4 Ever, and i saw it slightly high and it was very traumatic. maybe the most disturbing film for me personally.

a very good film seen recently: paris, texas

LOL. Hadn't meant to come off as a smart ass or anything. I just found it funny that the pic of the movie didn't come up and the only description you had was, "I don't really have any words".

As for thread seen a few movies in the last few days. Saw Due Date last night. Had some funny moments, but wasn't anything special. Good movie for wanting to just chill and watch something light. Saw Avatar, didn't really care for it much. It was really great visually, but the story was meh. If it was 30-40 minutes shorter than it would have been better.

Also saw Rocknrolla the other day. This dude I work with keeps talking about it and says it was better than Snatch and Lock, Stock..., but I'd put it third behind those two. It was a pretty good movie, but not as good as those other two by Guy Ritchie. I was delighted to see Stringer Bell (Idris Elba) in it though.

Fucking 'Dodgeball a story of underdog' is one of my favourite comedy's of the last 20 years, up with the likes of being John Malkovitch and Dumb an Dumber.

Ghost Dog

watched with friends. it was entertaining. the story is a prickly combination of pulp cinema and pushing some moral. it's about people killing and allowing themselves to be killed for absurd, thinly developed reasons. if the plot of a movie is so silly, it can't come off as trying so hard to be significant beyond in its own medium.

the game it plays with dialogue and subtitles is awesome. cracked me up every time. never got old.

god i love this movie, haven't seen it in forever. i know what i'm watching next.
also tucker & dale vs. evil is awesome, really funny and had a love story i actually liked.

finally saw Drive. it's as good as everyone says. i'm lusting after the soundtrack, it's so good.

Skrillex killed that great chill out electro shit, like the main theme from the opening credits which maybe are some of my favourite opening credits ever, with that shitty pink stylized shitty shit font.

Papillon

it is a good movie despite some major problems. the story wasn't very well suited for film. would make a better novel. i know it is a book; after seeing this characterization of the author i don't really want to read his non-fiction. the story is jumpy because there is nowhere near enough room. apparently it's 151 minutes. that time flew.

[spoil]i was so frustrated with him for giving those pearls to the nuns as collateral. he had seen that they were beggars who could be bought off. why create a situation where if they turn you in they get it all, and if they let you go they get nothing. terrible incentive.[/spoil]

Horrible Bosses

the casting made it feel like a tv show. was pretty mediocre with a few laugh-worthy lines. kevin spacey plays his character well, even though this movie was silly of him. jennifer aniston is a terrible actress.

Re-watched Heat in lieu of re-watching The Town. Always disliked the ending.

Pacino should have died instead at the end. Let the bad guys win more.

Y Tu Mama Tambien is free leech right now but I don't particularly feel like viewing it.

exiled.

i have a thing for bloodsoaked, highly stylized asian action movies and this one delivers far beyond expectations. in my opinion johnny to's best movie and absolutely obscure for no reason at all.

rewatched for the first time since i saw it back when it was released. i watched it in the same small arthouse cinema i saw exiled in and watching it again back to back with oldboy for the first time i realized how well these films play off one other.
where oldboy is all fire and rage and fury, lady vengeance is so much colder, more sadistic and ultimately more satisfying.

this coming of age story was so good.
it doesn't hurt that the protagonist looks like this:

marc andre grondin, you have my attention.
set in the 60's/70's, it deals with mostly familial homophobia and drug addiction. both hilarious and touching. musicphiles will appreciate the references.

Yeah I got the soundtrack after seeing it, too. You'd probably like music by Twin Shadow. Oddly some stuff from Yeasayer's newest album also scratches this itch. ... I'm making a playlist trying to throw in stuff from "The Weeknd" and I'm asking myself a lot of aural-aesthetic questions right now. It's like trying to capture the 80s, but without that decade having been so fucking dumb.
