Whatcha Drinking? v. Drunk Driver: "Don't make me stupid"

I always thought of rum and coke as the prototypical alky's drink. Not aiming that at you, MM, just the heaviest drinkers I've met seem to gravitate towards the stuff.

Think you're confusing rum and coke with special brew, tennants super and white star. I never saw any jakies sitting with a bottle of Havana and a 2 litre of coke.

I used to drink brandy now and again but I always find whisky the superior spirit.

I'm drinking Campo Viejo Rosé, rosé riojas and tempranillos are the bees knees.

Have you tried Calvados, ponch?

Obviously different people have different experiences! The first bunch of alkys I got involved with were all into their rum and coke. Chased with Tenants lager.

I've got a bottle sat in the cupboard, not so keen on it personally. I don't find it too bad mixed with a little apple juice. Perhaps I've just not acquired the taste for it?

A friend of mine buys me a whisky every now and again when out and about, it seems a bit wasted on me. Maybe it's one of those drinks you have to work at acquiring a taste for?

I suppose, although to be honest the only whiskies I'm really over-the-moon about are Islays. Laphroaig mainly but other Islays too. They are less sweet, and are more smoky and peaty. I found my "style", rather than acquired the taste.

Think most alcoholic drinks bar beer are an acquired taste, I never used to like wine, whisky, rum, ale or proper cider but I've developed a taste for all of them.

I've never been able to acquire the taste for most lagers. If you gave me a pint of Stella I'd be very uncomfortable. But I love all kinds of ale, and I like some lagers like Staropramen.

I think the last whisky I tried was an Oban single malt, that was a bit too smoky for my taste. I like ales and beers a little too much (IPA being my favourite style) hence my switch to spirits, in some kind of piss poor attempt at not becoming a fat bastard.

Most beer, especially the main brands, taste pretty crap but beers one of those things that's just really easy to drink. Goes down no problem and is pretty bland.

That's the thing with Stella for me, it almost makes me gag! Does not go down without a struggle.

I love an IPA too, although I think that new-fangled Golden Ale stuff is probably my favourite. I could drink those all night.

I swear there used to be far more people going around with beer guts than there are nowadays. Back in the late 70s, early 80s I remember meeting some of my Dad's rugby friends and the guts some of them had on them were astounding. You could balance a pint on them, standing up.

Not a fan of Stella but I can drink it. I wouldn't even go as far as to say I like lager but it's what I drink most of the time, it's fairly inoffensive, usually the cheapest and easy to drink. Until I started travelling I never drank beer actually, always cider, whisky or rum. Now it's more beer or wine (again didn't drink until visited South America as far as I remember).

Reading this thread in the last few days has made me subconsciously venture to Lidl, and today I bought a few bottles of the new Crabbie's to try. Now I see you're discussing rum. I literally just got back from Tescunts where I bought this:

I'm not a rum drinker at all, but I'm a sucker for a snazzy design and this was just asking to be bought. I couldn't really afford it, but just had my first shot and it's very nice. I'll definitely be getting it again.

that kraken looks good tribal-girl, how much £ and where from?

It's dreadful. Doesn't take like pears, more like cheap & nasty normal cider.

Rum and Ginger Beer + plenty of lime is by far my favourite mixed drink (Dark & Stormy). So bloody nice - thinking about it, I might have to get a bottle in for the weekend. Harm Reduction, my arse!
