The Alcohol thread...

And makes some people act like fucking idiots and do stupid shit?

I'm going to try stay off alcohol all July, doing my own dry July. Already been nearly 2 weeks without a drink, so am hoping I can doit. lol. :?

Anyone got any recommendations for a good cheap vodka? I know good/cheap is a bit of an oxymoron, but being cheap is the defining factor. Perhaps the best cheaper vodka is better said.

sometimes you can get finlandia for under thirty from dan murphys and some other places on special. some major chains sell it for a fair price all the time. its the best cheap vodka imo, much better than smirnoff etc.

How many standard drinks do u need to get drunk?
Last night I had one of those 350mL bottles of jack daniels and managed half of it. Its 11 standard drinks all up so I must take 6 std drinks. If I go out I drink dry martinis because only need 1 or 2, 3 and I am destroyed. I feel like this is good, the boys will drink WAY more and get fat hahaha :-)

Hmm well I don't really plan on living that long, but if I do I certainly hope I wont be drinking. Alcohol causes premature ageing and at 35 I doubt I could afford the wrinkles. *worried*

Anyhow, you did not answer my q, I want to know how many standard drinks, I want to know how high up it can go if people drink more regularly and stuff.
Tell me your numbers... tell me..

It's Friday, when I knock off im drinking some qual craft beer, created by me.

I'm slightly over drinking these days, but usually allways start the weekend with a coupla beers, from there it's psychedelics then opiates (not in the same night).

Fuck I love weekends.

I'm 22 and I drink everyday, at home. Only strong stuff, I dont care for beer and wine. (beer and wine drunk is lethargic)
Alcohol is like a stimulant to me, I drink to get up, I drink to get stuff done. Some people get sleepy, lethargic drinking, I'm not one of them, I get very energetic and I love life.
Some people get angry, unstable, obnoxious while drinking. Never happened to me.
I think alcohol is the best drug: cheap, dependable, easy to get, versatile.

^ you drink to get up, how does that work, are you drip fed while you sleep? good luck and all the best

You're worried about alcohol causing premature aging, yet you're not planning on living until you're 35? I'm a little confused.

I usually drink 3 glasses of wine a night, with 1 or 2 nights without alcohol a week, is this a good enough schedule to avoid physical dependence??

^ I think so. IMO physical dependency requires committed drinking - significant drinking all throughout the day, though different strokes for different folks. I've gone for periods drinking half a bottle of spirits a day without developing a physical dependency, though of course (and it goes without saying) that this isn't recommended.

That being said, you are still drinking more than is generally accepted to be healthy, and I'd also think you may be at risk (or already have) a psychological dependency, which may lead to you increasing your alcohol intake. The guidelines as to how much you can drink a week before risking body and brain damage are scarily low to me, I believe they recommend no more than 2 standard drinks a day, and a couple of alcohol free days a week, and no more than 4 in a session. Now I usually can't even feel 4 standard drinks, the amount I would drink on a very restrained night at home alone probably puts me in the binge drinking category. Sucks as a woman too that the acceptable amount is so much lower than for men.

^ cool. yeah i know its above the "recommended' limits, but it helps with my chronic pain and anxiety. standard drinks are a joke! they are so tiny.

In winter I drink strong dark beers (Stouts, porters, dark i.p.a's, dark lagers), I'll have one pint and I'm allready on 3-3.5 standard drinks.
Extremely hard for me to do under 2 standards through winter.
I think I drink more through winter aswell, gets to this stage and I'm over this bs weather, need a nice dark heavy beer to warm me up.

It's important to have alcohol free days, psychologically, because then you will know exactly how you feel about such things, mentally and physically.

At present, I can't go a day without alcohol, this is the 4th time I've been in this position, similar with cigarettes incidentally, although at different times. I digress, when you can easily have an alcohol free day without any kind of distressing thoughts or negative physical symptoms, I personally don't believe you're drinking too much.

Of course, prevention is better than a cure. Just like opiates and benzo's, it's best not to let it get to a stage where it's going to be extremely hard to return from.

If you realise that you're getting headaches at a certain time each day, constantly thinking about when is an "appropriate" time to have a drink, or constantly thinking about drinking, they're my own personal warning signs that I've got myself all fucked up again.

When you say accepible are do you mean socially or physically because im pretty sure the generalise with the fact that men are on average bigger than women.

Acceptable based on the scientific facts they have available. It is recommended that women, generally speaking, should drink less than men. Of course there are variables and a smaller man may be causing more harm to himself than a larger woman with different genetics if they drink the same amount.

In order to stay under .05, it is recommended that men can drink 2 standard drinks in the first hour, and 1 standard drink every hour after that. For women, they are recommended to have 1 standard drink very hour, not 2 in the first hour. It is also stated as a guide only, not a definite rule and you may well be over .05 if you follow those guidelines and there will be no sympathy from the courts or police if you tell them you followed this "rule". A healthy adult with a properly functioning liver should be able to rid the body of 1 standard drink per hour, however it varies from individual to individual.
